Memories Are Easier to Store Than Stuff

Memories Are Easier to Store Than Stuff

I live across the street from an 80-acre park and spend many mornings walking its paths, especially those in the rose garden, which is a favorite of local photographers. Young families with new babies, adult children with aging parents, graduating seniors—they’re often in the park, creating keepsakes for the family photo wall. But, most importantly, they’re building memories. I am especially intrigued by the young women getting their senior photos taken, leaning casually against a wall, their hair shining in the sunlight, their dresses shifting in the wind, their toenails painted. My senior photo was a different story. We had some serious rules back in the 1960s at my Catholic high school. We wore simple sweaters and pearls for a black-and-white studio shot identical to all our classmates. Only the faces changed, although some of us faced left and others faced right. No billowing dresses and flowing tresses like those young women of today. I don’t remember my photo shoot at all, and I wonder where I got the pearls and sweater because those were …

5 hands-free lights that make awkward repair jobs much easier

5 hands-free lights that make awkward repair jobs much easier

Working under a sink with a flashlight clenched between your teeth is a rite of passage nobody asks for. The fix is a cordless work light that hangs, sticks to metal, or props itself up while you work. Most run on the same batteries as your existing tools, so there’s no separate charger to deal with. I use the Ryobi version myself — it came with the ONE+ system I built my workshop around and gets grabbed more often than most of the actual tools. The four others here cover Milwaukee, DeWalt, Makita, and Ridgid — one for whatever platform you’re already running. Ryobi 18V ONE+ cordless LED light (PCL660B) Why it works for tight spots The Ryobi PCL660B puts out 280 lumens with a 130° pivoting head, which is more than enough for a crawl space, the interior of a cabinet, or the area behind a water heater. I have an older model with different ergonomics, but it works just as well. The pivoting head on the new version is what makes it actually …

I tried Flatpak, AppImage, and Snap — this one made Linux easier

I tried Flatpak, AppImage, and Snap — this one made Linux easier

Nothing derails a perfectly normal Linux conversation faster than asking, “So… how do you install apps?” You can feel the shift immediately. Someone cracks their knuckles. Another person leans forward like they’ve been waiting their whole life for this moment. Suddenly, it’s not a question anymore, it’s a debate club with strong opinions and suspicious levels of emotional investment. And I get it. I’ve been there. I’ve argued all sides depending on the week, the distro, and how recently something annoyed me. But after actually living with all three, not just testing them for a weekend and declaring victory, I’ve landed somewhere pretty firm. This isn’t theoretical anymore. This is a tested, mildly frustrated, occasionally caffeinated reality. And yeah, for me, there’s a clear winner. Why Linux needed new app formats Traditional packages worked until they very much didn’t There was a time when installing apps on Linux felt clean. You used your package manager, pulled something from the repo, and trusted that everything would just behave. Until you need newer software or a very …

Vermont utility makes it easier than ever to add a home battery

Vermont utility makes it easier than ever to add a home battery

Vermont utility Green Mountain Power is expanding one of the country’s most exciting virtual power plant programs, adding a new battery lease program to its menu of home energy offerings that lets customers add backup power at little to no upfront cost. Green Mountain Power (GMP) has already built a successful home battery program around Tesla’s industry-leading Powerwall – but despite the Powerwall’s excellent reputation, Tesla’s CEO has spent the last few years going out of his way to make himself a polarizing political figure, and a lot of people just don’t want to see their hard-earned money going to support Elon’s causes. GMP gets it, and they’ve expanded the program to include Enphase’s fourth-generation IQ Battery lineup, giving customers more freedom of choice about how they add backup power at home. “Enphase is a great company,” explains Alexander Mintz, owner and operator of Power Guru, a GMP certified backup battery installer. “(Enphase has been in business for over 20 years), they partnered with GMP to make it affordable for folks to install batteries for backup …

Facebook makes it easier for creators to report impersonators

Facebook makes it easier for creators to report impersonators

After widespread complaints that Facebook has become an “AI slop hellscape,” Meta on Friday announced new tools to detect impersonation, as well as updated creator guidelines that better define what Facebook considers to be “original content.” Last year, the company announced a crackdown on spammy and unoriginal content — things like repeatedly reusing someone else’s photos, videos, or text. The goal: elevate original creator content in its feeds and push back against the AI-generated slop and other low-quality posts that had been dragging down Facebook’s reputation. This is key to Facebook’s continued success as a creator platform. Simply put, if unoriginal content and AI slop drown out original voices and reduce creators’ ability to monetize, Facebook will no longer be a destination they prefer. Meta now says its earlier efforts caused both views of and time spent watching original content on Facebook to approximately double during the second half of 2025, compared with the same period the year before. It also said it has made progress on removing impersonators, with 20 million accounts removed in …

How to make any smartphone easier to use for a senior citizen

How to make any smartphone easier to use for a senior citizen

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. If you didn’t grow up with smartphones and tablets, then the touchscreen inputs, busy interfaces, and multiple apps can quickly become overwhelming. If you have parents or grandparents who struggle with the default, out-of-the-box experience offered by iOS or Android, then that’s understandable. It’s something that Apple and Google understand too, and modern day phones come with a variety of settings and features to make these smartphones easier to use for senior citizens. Apple iPhone On a basic level, you can adjust the legibility of text in iOS by opening Settings and choosing Display & Brightness: Use Text Size to make the text larger, and Bold Text to make it even more visible on display. To make other on-screen elements larger, choose Display Zoom and Larger Text from the Display & Brightness menu. Some handy tools are available in Accessibility in Settings. There’s VoiceOver, for example, which will read out text on screen (making it easier to get around …

This Chrome extension makes Gemini so much easier to use

This Chrome extension makes Gemini so much easier to use

Every new Google Gemini update brings excitement. But let’s be honest, there’s one improvement we will all cheer over everything else. A better way to organize Gemini chats in the sidebar. As an experienced technology writer, my Gemini sidebar resembled Gmail without the facility of labels. Hunting for a previous chat is a chaotic “infinite scroll” down a haphazard list. I needed a way to apply a sense of order to an AI’s sidebar mess. Enter Gemini Architect, a third-party Chrome extension that finally gives us the structure we want to see applied natively one day. No more endless scrolling for the chats This extension introduces “folder” organization directly into Gemini’s sidebar interface. You can create custom folders, name them by project, client, or topic (e.g., “Research,” “Book Notes,” “Ideas”), and use a simple drag-and-drop mechanism to move existing chats. In practice, the folders act more like labels, i.e. you don’t start a new Gemini chat within a specific folder, but just move the chat to organize it into a folder. This feature immediately allows …

Reformulated antibodies could be injected for easier treatment

Reformulated antibodies could be injected for easier treatment

In 2023, Doyle’s lab developed a way to generated highly concentrated antibody formulations by encapsulating them into hydrogel particles. However, that requires centrifugation, a step that would be difficult to scale up for manufacturing. In their new study, the researchers took a different approach that instead uses a microfluidic setup. Droplets containing antibodies dissolved in a watery prepolymer solution are suspended in an organic solvent and can then be dehydrated, leaving behind highly concentrated solid antibodies within a hydrogel matrix. Finally, the solvent is removed and replaced with an aqueous solution. Using semi-solid particles 100 microns in diameter, the team showed that the force needed to push the plunger of a syringe containing the solution was less than 20 newtons. “That is less than half of the maximum acceptable force that people usually try to aim for,” says Talia Zheng, an MIT graduate student who is the lead author of the new study. More than 700 milligrams of the antibody—enough for most therapeutic applications—could be administered at once with a two-milliliter syringe. The formulations remained …
