Apple’s Smart Home System Drops Cupertino Ingenuity in Your Living Room

Apple’s Smart Home System Drops Cupertino Ingenuity in Your Living Room

Remember the smart home? Way before AI, the metaverse, and longevity-maxxing, this was the tech industry’s next big thing. The guy who designed the iPhone made a thermostat. Amazon created a Pringles can you could talk to. Some guys thought decking out their sheds in Philips Hue lightbulbs was a great idea. Then we all thought better of it until 2026. With the Apple HomeView’s launch, the smart home is back. If not with a vengeance, then at least an array of dinky new products, a modicum of respect for your privacy, and just the one damn app to run them all through. So if you’re the kind of person whose world revolves around iPhone and Mac, bar the glitchy doorcam you use to deter would-be intruders, you’ll want to lock into all the new gear here. From a refreshed HomePod mini to a whole slate of LG-made accessories, I’ve gotten hands-on with all the latest gear at its launch event in New York. Here’s everything you need to know about Apple’s next smart home …

King Charles drops high-fashion collaboration: ‘Picture this’

King Charles drops high-fashion collaboration: ‘Picture this’

King Charles, 77, is celebrated for his dedication to royal duties and his unwavering passion for the environment, but what he may not be so well known for is being a fashionista. However, his country home has now teamed up with powerhouse Burberry for an exciting Highgrove x Burberry launch.  Burberry shared an Instagram post in conjunction with Highgrove Gardens and the video showed an animated video of the watercolour coming to life as well as the full look at the beautiful scarf. The caption read: “Picture this. An original watercolour by His Majesty The King depicting Birkhall on the Balmoral Estate – featured on the Highgrove x Burberry silk scarf.” The announcement garnered a lot of love online, including royal fans adding that it was a “stunning” and “beautiful” piece. One simply wrote: “Oh wow,” while others opted for love-heart-eyed emojis to express their opinion.  Other ‘new in’ items, as per the Highgrove Gardens website, include a trench coat, jacket and checked cashmere scarf.  This is not the first time that the iconic heritage …

Winchester College drops laptops for pen and paper

Winchester College drops laptops for pen and paper

Winchester College has abandoned laptops in favour of pens and paper in a crackdown on screens in classrooms. In a recent article in the UK Telegraph, Emily Smith wrote: The headmistress of one of Britain’s most academically selective schools said it was returning to traditional teaching methods because of concerns about screens hindering learning. Elizabeth Stone, the school’s first female headteacher, said the use of laptops in lessons was “distracting”, and that students would only be allowed to use them where there was evidence that they would be of “substantial” benefit to the children’s education. She told The Sunday Times: “There’s no point just tackling the phones if we’re going to say ‘Here’s a laptop that you have to have with you all the time, and you get access to it whenever you want’, because the vast majority of the activity that they’re doing on the phone can then just shift as easily onto a tablet or a laptop.” Ms Stone said the removal of laptops had already led to an improvement in learning. ATF Drops Registration For Suppressors And Short-Barreled Rifles Nationwide After DOJ Declines To Appeal

The ATF said Friday it will no longer require anyone to get federal approval before making or transferring suppressors, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns or “any other weapons,” and will no longer require those items to be registered, in guidance that extends a Texas court ruling to every gun owner, not just the plaintiffs who won it. “Effective October 9, 2026, ATF will no longer require individuals to seek ATF approval under the NFA” to make or transfer the items, the agency said in an open letter to licensed dealers, the Daily Caller reported. The letter adds that “these policies apply uniformly to anyone otherwise subject to these requirements, not just to the plaintiffs in the litigation.” A companion FAQ says Form 4 transfer applications are no longer required for the covered items. The change follows a ruling by U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix of the Northern District of Texas, who found on Aug. 5 that once Congress cut the transfer tax on these items to $0 in last year’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act, …

Tesla drops ‘Full Self-Driving’ name in Europe after Germany pushback

Tesla drops ‘Full Self-Driving’ name in Europe after Germany pushback

Tesla’s driver-assistance package is now called “Tesla Assisted Driving” in Europe. The company’s German website no longer mentions “Full Self-Driving,” and the old address now redirects to a new “Tesla Assisted Driving” page. The rename follows Germany’s Transport Ministry calling the FSD name misleading, and it’s part of a deal that has Berlin backing Tesla’s push for EU-wide approval. Germany wanted a new name, and Tesla offered one In a statement published October 6, Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) wrote that the name of the system formerly sold as “FSD – Full Self-Driving Supervised” is misleading because the system doesn’t take over the full driving task. The driver has to pay attention at all times and remains fully responsible for the car. Tesla offered to rename it “Tesla Assisted Driving” during talks with Transport Minister Steffen Bilger in September, according to the ministry. Democrats regain ground on voter registration in key states after steep post-2024 drops

Democrats regain ground on voter registration in key states after steep post-2024 drops

After having suffered massive voter registration losses in the wake of the last presidential election, Democrats have stemmed the bleeding in several key states heading into this year’s midterms, according to an NBC News Decision Desk analysis. NBC News’ Decision Desk analyzed voter file data from TargetSmart, a progressive data firm, for seven of the states that were the closest in the 2024 election and that registered voters by party: Arizona, Maine, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. From late 2024 through late 2025, Republicans significantly improved their voter registration margin over Democrats in all seven states, including by a net of roughly 100,000 in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. But from late 2025 through the middle of this year, Democrats managed to reverse, though not completely erase, those losses in five of them, adding more registrants on net than Republicans in Arizona, Maine, Nevada, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. And in New Hampshire and North Carolina, Democrats have slowed the decline. While party registration is not 100% predictive of vote choice, the recent …
