Lyft is paying $272.5M to settle lawsuit over how it classified drivers

Lyft has agreed to pay $272.5 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the ride-hailing company of violating California law by misclassifying drivers as independent contractors, instead of employees. The company said in a regulatory filing that it believes the settlement will allow it to avoid the “costs and distraction of protracted litigation and enable management to maintain its focus on executing its business objectives.” Lyft could not be reached for comment. The settlement stems from a lawsuit filed by the California Labor Commissioner’s Office in August 2020 that accused Lyft of treating drivers as independent contractors rather than as employees, as required under state law at the time. The lawsuit alleged that drivers were denied minimum wage and overtime, as well as other benefits and protections provided to employees, including paid sick leave and timely wage payments. “This settlement is about the workers who came forward and spoke up. Their voices made this outcome possible,” California Labor Commissioner Lilia García-Brower said in a statement, adding that the LCO will forgo its share of the settlement …

IONNA’s eight founding automakers are BMW, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Stellantis, and Toyota. They’re building a charging network open to all EV drivers with sites it calls “Rechargeries.” More Circle K charging stops More than 40 Rechargeries have opened at Circle Ks since IONNA announced its partnership with the convenience store chain in April. Some passengers told local media outlets they were en route via Uber when they received notice. Source link

Grubhub’s M FTC settlement is finally reaching diners and drivers

Grubhub’s $24M FTC settlement is finally reaching diners and drivers

Well over half a million Grubhub drivers and customers are set to receive a share of $23.8 million following allegations that the food delivery company misled workers about their potential earnings and engaged in other deceptive practices. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced on Wednesday that it’s distributing the money to 640,038 consumers, with most recipients receiving a check in the mail. Some will receive their payments through PayPal. The payouts stem from a lawsuit the FTC and Illinois Attorney General filed against Grubhub in December 2024. The complaint accused the company of a range of unlawful practices, including making misleading claims about how much drivers could earn, restricting customers’ access to their accounts and money, and listing restaurants on its platform without their permission. Another allegation involved Grubhub’s restaurant listings. According to the complaint, the company had as many as 325,000 restaurants on its platform that were not affiliated with Grubhub. The FTC alleged that Grubhub used those listings to make its platform appear larger. The complaint also alleged that Grubhub sometimes refused to …

What the DVSA’s new MOT rules mean for drivers

What the DVSA’s new MOT rules mean for drivers

New rules around MOT tests will be rolled out for drivers across the UK from next week, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed. From 3 August, MOT testers at selected garages will be able to take and upload a photo of a vehicle during the test using a device like a smartphone or tablet. It marks the first part of a wider rollout. This will provide additional evidence that the vehicle was present at the garage during the test, DVSA said, deterring the risk of fraudulent MOT activity. The move is aimed at tackling the rising issue of ‘ghost MOTs’ in the UK, where a vehicle is recorded as having passed the test without any inspection. This is illegal under motoring laws, with the annual safety inspection designed to check the status of components like brakes, tyres and lights. The chance of dangerous road incidents increases when these components are faulty. Some 1,809 fraudulent MOTs were uncovered by the DVSA in 2024, up from 976 in 2023 – nearly double. Carrying out …

Drivers to lap Silverstone in Lego cars before British GP

Drivers to lap Silverstone in Lego cars before British GP

SILVERSTONE, England, July 2 : Formula One drivers will do a parade lap of Silverstone before Sunday’s British Grand Prix in mini-cars made of Lego bricks. The stunt is one of a series in a tie-up between the Liberty Media-owned sporting organisation and the Danish toymaker, following on from events at several races in 2025. In Miami last year, the drivers took to the track around the Hard Rock Stadium in 10 life-size two-seater electric cars made of Lego. Last July, the top three finishers at the British Grand Prix were rewarded for their efforts with trophies made of Lego. And later, at Las Vegas, a Lego 1950s Cadillac made of more than 418,000 bricks and driven by actor Terry Crews was used to ferry the top three drivers to the podium. The cars for the drivers’ parade at this year’s race are each made of more than 28,000 bricks and capable of reaching speeds of up to 25 kph (16 mph) on standard go-kart wheels – a glacial pace compared to what follows. They …

Ignore sat nav diversions to unfamiliar roads when stuck in traffic, drivers told

Ignore sat nav diversions to unfamiliar roads when stuck in traffic, drivers told

Drivers are being urged to disregard sat nav directions that reroute them onto rural roads. The plea from road safety charity IAM RoadSmart comes as its recent survey found 54% of motorists are being diverted onto country lanes to bypass congestion on motorways, dual carriagewayss and other major A-roads. The warning comes as Department for Transport (DfT) figures for 2024 reveal 60% of road deaths in Britain occurred on rural roads, despite carrying only 45% of traffic. IAM RoadSmart highlighted inherent dangers: agricultural vehicles, narrow lanes, and restricted visibility from roadside foliage. It warned that without increased capacity on major roads, more drivers risk being directed onto unfamiliar, hazardous rural routes. Then-prime minister Rishi Sunak cancelled all future smart motorway projects in April 2023 because of safety concerns. It said there is a risk that more drivers will be diverted onto unfamiliar rural routes unless capacity is increased on major roads. (Alamy/PA) All lane running smart motorways – which boost capacity by converting the hard shoulder into a live lane – were rolled out from …

Drivers who ignore ‘5 minute’ DVLA alert risk £2.5k fines

Drivers could fall foul of this rule if they’re not careful (Image: Getty) People could risk a hefty fine if they’re caught driving without paying a specific bill. It is a legal requirement for almost all vehicles in the UK to pay some form of road tax. In a post on X, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) said: “Set up your Driver and vehicles account on GOV.UK and you can choose to receive vehicle tax reminders by text or email. Do it today – it only takes 5 minutes.” Drivers can sign up for the free service here, and opt for updates by text or email when the time to renew is approaching. There are also options to be reminded when your MOT and photocard licence expire, ensuring drivers have no excuse to miss a deadline. To use this service, you must have either a driving licence issued in England, Scotland or Wales or a vehicle log book (V5C) in your name. The DVLA adds that drivers “cannot set up vehicle tax reminders …

Prada Heir Lorenzo Bertelli Hops Back Into His Racecar Driver’s Seat to Give VF a Spin

Vitale, who was Versace’s creative director for a single, critically beloved spring 2026 collection, was not unknown to the Prada Group, as he had been at Miu Miu for more than 14 years. His departure from Miu Miu in January 2025 was perhaps seen as less than loyal. And the new owners wanted their own pick of creative director. “The stories that are around are quite public,” Bertelli says. “Even before Dario left [Miu Miu], we tried to somehow communicate to him to wait three or four months, to see where it could have ended up. He’s ambitious. He made up his mind, there was nothing to do to stop him. I think at the end it was a successful journey for him.” Bad news and letting employees go is part of the job. “It’s just business. It’s much more difficult to talk about employees that are lower level in the organization of people. The biggest responsibility we have is the family of those thousands of people. But those managers on top, they will find …
