Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. The 2025 National Book Critics Circle Award Winners Announced The big story is that James did not in fact win in the fiction category. The winner, which I have not read so I will withold any “but whyyyyyy” reactions, is My Friends by Hisham Matar. It is been in and around several awards so I wouldn’t say it is a surprise necessarily. No wait, I think it actually kind of is. Challenger winning in Nonfiction and There’s Always This Year in Criticism (still a puzzle why it is there) are terrific outcomes. Full list of winners, including Best First Book and Translation, listed here. Finalists for Inaugural Climate Fiction Prize Announced Here’s an interesting book prize that I hadn’t heard of previously. Climate Spring, which is a nonprofit dedicated to “transforming” the what climate change is represented in …

Ofsted reform critics want ‘low-accountability’

Ofsted reform critics want ‘low-accountability’

More from this theme Recent articles Ofsted chief inspector Sir Martyn Oliver has accused the “most vocal critics” of proposed inspection reforms of seeking a “low-accountability system”, as he insisted report cards “are not and never were going to bring about the end of grading”. In his keynote address at the Association of School and College Leaders (ASCL) conference in Liverpool on Friday, Oliver urged sector leaders to take part in Ofsted’s ongoing consultation into proposed reforms. The most vocal critics of the proposed reforms seem to be under the misapprehension that a new low-accountability system is possible The inspectorate proposes to replace single-phrase judgments with new “fairer” report cards with five grades across at least nine judgment areas. It will also end ungraded inspections and increase monitoring of under-performing schools. The proposals have been heavily criticised by ASCL, which said the new report cards would be “worse than single-word judgments” which were scrapped last year. General secretary Pepe D’Iasio said the new system would be “bewildering” for teachers, leaders, and parents, and accused the …

The new NBC legal drama, which premiered Sunday, comes after the original Meghan Markle-starring series concluded its nine-season run in 2019. It welcomes an entirely new cast led by Arrow alum Stephen Amell as former prosecutor-turned-entertainment lawyer Ted Black, who owns a Los Angeles-based law firm facing a major crisis. It also sees the return of Suits star Gabriel Macht, who reprises his role of powerhouse defense attorney Harvey Specter. Macht made his first blink-and-you-miss-it cameo in the reboot’s pilot episode, where he was pictured alongside Ted in a photo sitting on the latter’s desk. The spinoff was first confirmed in November 2024 after its predecessor experienced a surge in popularity the year prior when it became available on Netflix. It racked up an impressive 57 billion minutes of viewing time. Still, it doesn’t …

Welcome back to The Daily’s Sunday culture edition. The critics don’t always get it right. Some viewers are adamant that certain polarizing or panned shows deserve their flowers, while others think particular acclaimed series can be overindulged with praise. For those who enjoy bickering with a Rotten Tomatoes score, read on for our editors’ answers to the question: What is a TV show that the critics were wrong about? Season 2 of Euphoria (streaming on Max) Coming off the heels of Euphoria’s visually stunning and acclaimed first season, the ingredients were all there for a successful Season 2: the talent, the stylish costuming, Labrinth’s distinctive synth-loaded score, the sheer force of the show’s cultural influence. I cared about the characters and their arcs—a feeling only amplified by the gut-wrenching performances of Rue (played by Zendaya) and Jules (played by …

Demi Moore continues winning streak at Critics Choice Awards – as Zoe Saldana and Adrien Brody also take home top prizes | Ents & Arts News

Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana, Kieran Culkin and Adrien Brody are among the big winners of this year’s Critics Choice Awards. Moore took home the best actress award for her performance in The Substance, in which she plays a fading Oscar winner who discovers a black-market drug to create a younger model of herself. The prize adds to her Golden Globe win and Oscar nomination in what has been her first acknowledgement for major Hollywood awards, after decades in the business. “This has been such a wild ride, I can’t tell you when I started this journey on this film, I could never imagine being here,” the 62-year-old said as she collected her award at the ceremony in Santa Monica, Los Angeles. “This is so far beyond anything I could have hoped for.” Image: Moore was hugged by her co-star Margaret Qualley as she was announced the winner. Paul W. Downs Calls for More L.A. Productions at Critics Choice Awards

Hacks actor, co-creator and co-showrunner Paul W. Downs called on studios to shoot more projects in Los Angeles at the 2025 Critics Choice Awards. Downs took the stage during the ceremony to accept the award for best comedy series, thanking his cast and crew before issuing a charge to decision-makers in the audience. “This show has been shot a little bit in Las Vegas, but mostly in Los Angeles since day one, and the more we tell people that we shoot in Los Angeles, the more we hear, ‘you are so lucky,’ and that shouldn’t be the case because this is an industry town, and we should have more productions in L.A.,” Downs said to a round of applause. “I feel like the people in this room have the power to make that happen, so we need to ask to shoot our shows here in LA,” he added. In January, the latest report from film permitting office FilmLA found overall production in Los Angeles hit a historic low last year with a total of 23,480 shoot …

Elon Musk’s pro-Trump critics claim they’re being censored on X

Elon Musk’s pro-Trump critics claim they’re being censored on X

Conservatives critical of Elon Musk are accusing the platform he owns of censoring them, CNN reports. Political activist Laura Loomer sparked an online debate within the Right about work visas known as H-1Bs, which Musk supports. Loomer now claims her account has been unverified and demonetized, accusing Musk of being a “free speech fraud.” Meanwhile, another conservative activist, Charles C. Johnson, claims X banned his account because he “embarrassed” Musk by writing about his father’s alleged involvement with an emerald mine, something Musk has long denied. (Neither this nor Loomer’s accusations have been substantiated.) Elon has long publicly supported free speech, posting that it’s “the bedrock of democracy.” But Musk has also been accused of silencing people on the platform, notably in 2022 when X temporarily suspended journalists covering the suspension of an account tracking his jet. X didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Source link

The New York Times Presents the 100 Best Books of the 21st Century, Selected by 503 Novelists, Poets & Critics

For longtime readers of American book journalism, scrolling through the New York Times Book Review’s just-published list of the 100 best books of the twenty-first century will summon dim memories of many a once-unignorable critical fuss. At one time or another over the past 25 years, some of us felt as if we could hardly consider ourselves literate unless we’d read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, say, or A Visit from the Goon Squad, or The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, or seemingly anything by George Saunders — all of which have placed on the Book Review’s list, the product of surveying “hundreds of literary luminaries,” some of whose ballots have been made available for public viewing. As a reminder of how deep we are into this century, more than a few of the authors of these noted books — Denis Johnson, Joan Didion, Philip Roth, Cormac McCarthy, Hilary Mantel — have already shuffled off this mortal coil. Roberto Bolaño, whose The Savage Detectives and 2666 placed at numbers 38 and 6, …

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. 2024 NBCC Awards Longlist: Fiction With the PEN Award, the NBCC often has the most unexpected end of year finalists, but this year’s list is probably as a consensus of a lists from them as I can recall. Only two here stand out as unusual: Sister Deborah and Us Fools, though this might be the highest profile list out this year that does not include All Fours. I am also of the opinion that if you are going to make a big show of announcing finalists ahead of the award, some description or explanation of what makes each book special is appropriate. Sure there was language from some review of this body of critics that would have illuminated, contextualized, or otherwise made the case for the excellence of these book, especially for the ones from whom this is …

‘Wicked’ and ‘Conclave’ Lead the Critics Choice Award Nominations

‘Wicked’ and ‘Conclave’ Lead the Critics Choice Award Nominations

Wicked and Conclave led the Critics Choice Award nominations Thursday morning, picking up 11 nominations each. Both films were nominated for best picture, joined by A Complete Unknown, Anora, The Brutalist, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing, and The Substance. The Critics Choice Association’s 10 best-picture nominees almost exactly match the AFI’s list of the top 10 films of the year, with one swap—Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance made the cut for Critics Choice, knocking out Jesse Eisenberg’s A Real Pain. While the best-picture race has begun to crystalize, this year’s acting races continue to be as wild as ever. After winning best actress at the NYCC and LACC but getting snubbed at the Golden Globes, Marianne Jean-Baptiste is back in the conversation with a best-actress nomination for her barn-burning performance in Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths. She’s joined by Cynthia Erivo, Karla Sofía Gascón, Angelina Jolie, Mikey Madison, and Demi Moore. Though they made it into the Golden Globes, nominees like Babygirl’s Nicole Kidman, Nightbitch’s Amy Adams, and Lee’s Kate Winslet couldn’t crack …
