Cost-cutter founder loses out on £7 million contract

Institute of School Business Leaders will no longer be responsible for supplying the money-saving experts Institute of School Business Leaders will no longer be responsible for supplying the money-saving experts More from this theme Recent articles The founding partner of the government’s cost-cutter programme has lost out on a £7 million contract to send advisers into schools. The Institute of School Business Leaders (ISBL) was called in by then-academies minister Lord Agnew to support the school resource management adviser (SRMA) scheme when it was piloted in 2018. But it will no longer be responsible for supplying the money-saving experts – meaning it won’t hold either of the two contracts for the SRMA scheme in the new year. Stephen Morales Stephen Morales, the organisation’s chief executive, told Schools Week: “We submitted a bid in good faith and others were successful where we weren’t, but we’re OK with that. “We are proud of the seven years we have invested in equipping over 130 practitioners with the tools and knowledge to act as highly effective system leaders, but …

Harwell’s Open Cosmos signs €35m contract with ESA

Harwell’s Open Cosmos signs €35m contract with ESA

Open Cosmos, which designs, builds and operates space missions has signed a contract worth €35m with the European Space Agency for the development, launch, and commissioning of NanoMagSat, the third mission in the ESA Scout framework tapping into New Space and complementing ESA’s series of Earth Explorer research missions. This innovative mission will use a constellation of three satellites to advance the understanding and monitoring of Earth’s magnetic field and ionospheric environment. The magnetic field, essential to life on Earth, shields the planet from energetic charged particles. Understanding its dynamics is vital for precise navigation, geophysical surveying, and studying the properties of Earth’s shallow and deep structures. NanoMagSat will complement and extend the electromagnetic field measurements of ESA’s highly successful Swarm mission, ensuring continuous European leadership in magnetic field observation from space—a legacy that has been maintained since 1999. The NanoMagSat mission is designed to monitor the Earth’s magnetic field and ionospheric environment with unparalleled spatio-temporal coverage and revisit times. It consists of three satellites, which will orbit the Earth at an altitude of 545 …

SpaceX wins 3M Space Force launch contract

SpaceX wins $733M Space Force launch contract

SpaceX was awarded an eight-launch, $733 million contract by the U.S. Space Force on Friday, as part of an ongoing program intended to foster competition among launch providers. The award includes seven launches for the Space Development Agency and one for the National Reconnaissance Office, all anticipated to use Falcon 9s and occur no earlier than 2026.  The massive new contract is part of a U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command (SSC) program with the catchy name of “National Security Space Launch Phase 3 Lane 1.” This third round of contracts was split into two lanes last year: Lane 1, for lower-risk missions and near-Earth orbits; and Lane 2, for heavy-lift missions and the more demanding orbits.  The Space Force selected SpaceX, United Launch Alliance and (somehow, despite not getting to orbit yet) Blue Origin to compete for launches under Lane 1 earlier this summer. At the time, the Space Force acknowledged that the pool of awardees was small, but that it aimed to account for this by allowing companies to bid on Lane 1 …

Our Open Marriage Contract — ‘We Designed Our Relationship As A Business’

Our Open Marriage Contract — ‘We Designed Our Relationship As A Business’

Our hero gets engaged to the girl of his dreams, a friend of a friend who just so happens to hate the concept of marriage, and who prefers the convenience of an open relationship. Here is how the “marriage contract” materialized.  As a freelance journalist, I’m constantly on the lookout for good ideas. Sometimes they come to me in the middle of a shower, or during a walk. But not so long ago, the woman I refer to alternately as my “life partner” or my fiancée, Carrie, stumbled upon an especially bright idea after becoming the unfortunate recipient of an early morning death threat from her then-boyfriend. The couple’s six-year-long relationship had been on its last legs for some time, but their latest ongoing argument — he had borrowed $16,000 from her, but harbored no intention to repay — had been turning increasingly vicious. “If you come after me for your money,” he told her one morning, after returning from a week-long Caribbean vacation, “I’ll put you in a hole!” That was when Carrie realized …

Intuitive Machines lands .8B NASA contract to build Earth-Moon communications infrastructure

Intuitive Machines lands $4.8B NASA contract to build Earth-Moon communications infrastructure

NASA wants to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon, but right now, astronauts have to be in direct line of sight with Earth to phone home.  The space agency is looking to change that with its developing Near Space Network, and it’s willing to pay potentially huge sums to private companies to help make continuous lunar communications a reality. Those plans got a boost today when NASA announced it had awarded Intuitive Machines a contract to build and deploy a satellite constellation capable of providing navigation and communications for future missions on or around the Moon.  The Houston-based company is best known for pulling off the first-ever private Moon landing in February. (That mission was cut short after the lander tripped on a rock and landed on its side, but it still counts.) The company sells a rideshare service to the Moon, but payloads can only transmit data when in direct line of sight with a ground station. The task order contract for the Lunar Relay has a maximum potential value of $4.82 …

Woman flew to UK for contract killing disguised in hijab

Woman flew to UK for contract killing disguised in hijab

UK police are hunting an American woman who flew to Birmingham to carry out a contract killing disguised in a hijab. Aimee Betro, 44, was hired to kill Sikander Ali, a clothes boutique owner, on the orders of business rival Mohammed Aslam, 56, and his son Mohammed Nazir, 30, a court heard. Betro disguised herself in a hijab before trying to gun Ali down outside a house in Acocks Green, Birmingham on Sept 7, 2019. The would-be hit woman fled when her gun jammed, but later returned in a taxi and fired three shots at the property before texting Mr Ali’s father Aslat Mahamud: “Stop playing hide and seek” and “Where are you hiding?” Betro flew back to the United States two days after the failed killing. Nazir and Aslam were found guilty of conspiracy to murder on Monday after Birmingham Crown Court heard they had held a grudge against Mr Ali’s family following a violent dispute at his boutique clothing store in Birmingham on July 21, 2018. Efforts to find Betro ‘continue’ West Midlands …

Sesame Workshop Writers Union Ratifies Contract

Sesame Workshop Writers Union Ratifies Contract

After mounting a strike threat that was later averted, Sesame Workshop writers have ratified a new five-year labor contract that their union president is touting as “groundbreaking.” Twenty-eight out of the group of 35 workers voted to support a tentative deal reached on April 19, while the remaining seven abstained from voting. The Writers Guild of America East and West, which represent the workers, who write shows including Sesame Street, Helpsters and The Not Too Late Show With Elmo, announced the results on Friday. The new agreement expands work that is covered under the union contract to include writing for all projects distributed on SVOD platforms, educational programs, new media videos that are shared on TikTok and YouTube and animated titles. WGA East president Lisa Takeuchi Cullen said in a statement that the new contract contains “groundbreaking protections.” She added, “Make no mistake — these historic gains mark an important step in organizing animation. Writing for children’s media and animation isn’t easier than other forms of screenwriting, and those workers deserve the same protections.” The new deal increases …
