“Cassie Workman is Witchy AF” is a comic spell for a mad world

While introducing the inaugural subject of “Cassie Workman is Witchy AF,” the host pertly pulls a bait-and-switch. She opens her monologue by describing a hypothetical figure born to great privilege. A small sketch of Elon Musk lurks in the foreground, but she never so much as side-eyes its frame. Due to hubris, laziness and drug abuse, Workman continues, the person in question decides it’s easier to grift, spout right-wing nonsense and abandon reality. With that, she places another picture in front of Musk’s and says, “And that person is Aleister Crowley.” Behold the Australian comic embracing her season. As Gen Z takes a turn en masse toward the world of woo-woo and anti-trans legislation pollutes politics here and abroad, Workman, a transgender immigrant, is unapologetically promoting the lighter side of popular wiccanery from her fictional occult bookstore. “I am expecting some pushback on the internet,” she deadpans.     Maybe not. “Witchy AF,” executive produced by Lilly Wachowski, is undeniably entertaining. Think of it as a cocktail mix of “Mystery Science Theater 3000” and “Drunk …

Love This YA Novel? Try It In Comic Form.

Something that’s become a staple of young adult literature, thanks to over a decade of popularity, is the adaptation of beloved YA novels into comic form. These adaptations take the story you know and love in narrative form and bring it into a visual format. This, of course, means that not everything from the original text makes it into the comic, but the story itself, alongside beloved characters, gets the opportunity to play out in a new and fresh way. Comics require a form of literacy that coincides with traditional reading skills. In addition to understanding how to parse text, comics require visual skills, too. This makes reading comic adaptations especially worthwhile: they can be a powerful introduction to a longer novel for readers, as much as they are excellent introductions to comics for readers who gravitate toward more traditional novels. The best part? Readers can experience both formats and walk away with a rich, meaningful reading experience. Though YA comic adaptations aren’t new, over the last half-decade, an increasing number of beloved YA novels …

How to Promote Your Comic

How to Promote Your Comic

How do you cut through the constant noise and clutter to grab the attention of the readers who have been waiting for a book like yours? By being as creative with your marketing as you are with writing and illustrating! For example, there’s The Primal of Blood and Bone, a vampire novel printed with “garlic-infused ink.” Less appetizing but just as attention-getting is the variant cover of horror comic Dark Regards printed with the blood of the writer, editor, and publisher. Streaming series The Comic Shop actually released a tie-in comic to promote the show. Coming up with such unique concepts is not always as easy as it sounds, and they’re not always easy to implement. To gain more insight into the process, I spoke with comic book writer Daniel Nayeri and his wife, author Alexandra Davis, about a most unusual promotional campaign they undertook late last year. The graphic novel series Nayeri writes, “The Bizarre Bazaar,” centers on a curio shop filled with strange and dangerous items. It made perfect sense to promote the …

Plants convert carbon dioxide into oxygen during photosynthesis, the process they use to make their own food. carbon monoxide: A toxic gas whose molecules include one carbon atom and one oxygen atom. (The …
