‘Monstrous’ seven-bedroom house triggers neighbour row

‘Monstrous’ seven-bedroom house triggers neighbour row

A “monstrous” seven-bedroom house being built on the edge of Bath has triggered a planning row with neighbours. Residents claim that the house has been built significantly higher and with a larger footprint than what was originally approved by the council. A retrospective application has been submitted to “validate” the changes to the original plans. Bath and North-East Somerset council said enforcement action would only be “considered” after the fresh application has been determined. More than 70 residents attended a recent site meeting while 100 people lodged formal objections to the seven-bedroom home. Residents are opposed to the new property – Tom Wren / SWNS Documents state that Thomas Worrall is listed as the applicant for the plans. He is also listed as a director of TKB Property Developments and TK Building Company on Companies House. Tavis Hamilton, 48, who lives next door to the house and has spent years battling developers, is one of more than 100 residents objecting to the build. Mr Hamilton called the house “monstrous” and said: “The new application has …

Others pop their pillow cases in the freezer. And more still are spending hundreds of pounds on portable air conditioning units. But there’s one method to help you cool down and sleep during this relentless summer of heatwaves that is so counterintuitive you’ve likely not tried it yet. How about a hot bath before bed? Yes, it may sound mad. Surely an icy shower would be a better way of cooling off before hitting the sack? The answer to that question is a resounding “no”, according to science. Even though it might feel nice at the time, “if the water is too cold, the skin blood vessels constrict, preventing dissipation of heat from the skin and delaying …

The Absolute Best Bath Filters of 2026, Tested & Reviewed

The Absolute Best Bath Filters of 2026, Tested & Reviewed

I hate to break it to you, but the tap water you’re soaking in when you take a bath is likely not filtered whatsoever. It’s totally safe, but it may have impurities in it that can irritate skin (especially for babies and kids) and dry out hair, like chlorine, chloramine and hard water minerals. That’s where a bath filter comes in. Like filtered showerheads, bath filters remove impurities as water comes out of the spout, so by the time it makes its way into your tub, it’s more purified. I’ve been testing bath filters for over a month, have done extensive research about them and talked to experts about how (and if) they really work. Find out everything you need to know — including which models I recommend — below. Want more from NBC Selected? Sign up for our newsletter, The Selection, and shop smarter. What are bath filters? Bath filters are exactly what they sound like: filters for bath water. They’re point of use filters, which means they treat water directly at the fixture, …

Quantum bath keeps distant qubits entangled without human control

Quantum bath keeps distant qubits entangled without human control

Two qubits sat half a meter apart, with no direct link between them. Yet correlated microwave photons pushed them into a shared quantum state, offering a new route to entanglement without constant intervention. Distributed entanglement connects quantum bits across separate locations. It could support larger quantum processors and networks that move quantum information between distant modules. Most existing approaches require carefully timed control pulses, repeated measurements or post-selection. The ISTA method instead uses the qubits’ environment as the entangling mechanism. Future quantum computing will require correlations between distant modules. This feature, known as distributed entanglement, has traditionally relied on active control and repeated measurements. (CREDIT: ISTA) “In this work, we aimed to overcome this mismatch between the readily available and the practically useful forms of entanglement,” said PhD student Alejandro Andrés-Juanes to The Brighter Side of News. “By stabilizing the entangled states remotely, our approach is fully autonomous and requires no active control or measurement.” A quantum bath that creates order The experiment used two transmon qubits, a common type of superconducting quantum bit. Each …

Electrochemical bath provides new way to recycle lithium-ion batteries

Electrochemical bath provides new way to recycle lithium-ion batteries

Cornell researchers have developed an electrochemical solution that can regenerate the electrodes of lithium-ion batteries. The recycled batteries could then regain up to 95% of their original power and last longer when reused. Published in Energy and Environmental Science by lead author postdoctoral researcher Kiwon Kim, the project to recycle lithium-ion batteries was led by Vibha Kalra, the Fred H. Rhodes Professor of Chemical Engineering in the Cornell Duffield College of Engineering. Co-authors include doctoral student Chenlu Yang and Sabine Gallagher at Argonne National Laboratory, with additional support provided by the Pao-Wang Fellowship. Subverting the linear “take-make-dispose approach” of batteries Spent lithium-ion batteries, when they are not causing extremely hot fires in electric vehicles, often end up in landfill, where they leak chemicals into the surrounding environment. As well as this detrimental effect on nature, this approach is in conflict with the limited global supply of critical raw materials like nickel and cobalt, which are needed to manufacture lithium-ion batteries. “When these lithium-ion batteries came about, nobody was thinking about how these minerals are limited …

Expert explains why our fingers get wrinkly after a long bath or swim

Get the Well Enough newsletter with Harry Bullmore for tips on living a healthier, happier and longer life Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Get the Well Enough email with Harry Bullmore Skin is an awesome and weird organ. As the body’s biggest organ, it does a lot to look after you, protecting you from the outside world of sunlight, harsh chemicals, nasty germs and severe cold. And it does all this while keeping water inside your body and enabling the sense of touch. I’m a biomedical engineer. My research team and I try to better understand the mechanics and function of soft biological tissues. We know skin wrinkles as you get older or when you pinch it between two fingers. But it’s been somewhat of a mystery why skin gets wrinkly and even sometimes changes color after you take a leisurely bath or spend too long in the swimming pool. Often people assume that these wrinkles form because the skin absorbs water, which makes it swell up and buckle. To be honest, …

Last summer, we reported on a juvenile raccoon which, with his head stuck in a peanut butter jar, as if he were a character in a Looney Toons cartoon. He was extracted from the predicament at the New England Wildlife Center in Weymouth, Massachusetts, where employees are now dealing with another children’s show-worthy situation involving a raccoon. A baby raccoon taking a bubble bath, to be precise. A Facebook post by the wildlife center features two pictures of a member of the team washing the mammal in a big blue bowl. Another picture gives viewers a great close-up of his nose and thoroughly defeated expression as the employee holds it wrapped in a white towel, presumably …

Birdfy Bird Bath Pro, Birdfy Feeder, and Birdfy Feeder 2 Duo Review

Birdfy Bird Bath Pro, Birdfy Feeder, and Birdfy Feeder 2 Duo Review

There are multiple companies making bird feeders with AI identification that send you pictures and info on the birds visiting your home, and Birdfy is one of the better-known brand names. I’ve reviewed and regularly use multiple Bird Buddy products, so when Birdfy asked if I wanted to give their bird feeders a look last winter, I said yes. Birdfy has a lot of bird feeder options at different prices, along with camera-equipped bird baths and bird houses. I’ve been testing the standard Birdfy Feeder ($170 with solar panel and lifetime AI included), the Birdfy Feeder 2 Duo ($360), and the Birdfy Bath Pro (currently $280) for the past five months, so I’m very familiar with the product options and the Birdfy software, which is a major factor when choosing a smart product. Birdfy products record bird visits, providing AI species identification and photos and videos that you can watch. You just need to put them in a spot that gets a decent Wi-Fi signal to view the birds that are coming to your area. …
