Birmingham: 17 babies suffer serious circumcision complications

The National Secular Society has warned of a ‘catastrophic failure of child safeguarding’ after damning new research reveals boys are coming to serious harm following circumcision in Birmingham. Data acquired by the NSS shows 17 baby boys were treated for “life threatening haemorrhage, shock or sepsis which relates to a circumcision” at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s NHS Foundation Trust last year. A further 29 babies were treated at the Trust for serious complications between 2022 and 2024, at an estimated cost of £264,000 to the taxpayer. The NHS only funds medically necessary circumcisions, which are rarely needed for infants, suggesting that many of the procedures were performed in the local community for non-therapeutic (i.e. religious or cultural) reasons. Under UK law, anyone can legally circumcise boys, even if they have no medical training or “proven expertise”. Anaesthesia does not have to be used, and doctors struck off the medical register for dangerous circumcisions can continue to legally circumcise boys as laypeople. At least five babies have died since 2007 following non-therapeutic circumcisions, including Celian Noumbiwe, …

Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child

Lena Dunham Welcomes First Child

It’s a girl for the Girls creator. Lena Dunham and husband Luis Felber have welcomed their first baby, a daughter, via surrogate, Dunham shared in a Vogue essay. The couple, who tied the knot in 2021 and whose relationship served as the inspiration for Netflix’s 2025 Too Much TV series, are pictured with their baby daughter alongside the Vogue piece. Dunham had a hysterectomy in 2018 due to her longtime battle with endometriosis. But she has said she still wanted to be a mom. “Some people don’t dream about being mothers, but I had, and it was a big part of my identity that I was going to do it someday in that way,” Dunham said in an April interview with Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones on Today with Jenna and Sheinelle. Timed to the release of Too Much, Dunham told the U.K.’s Times that she was in the process of “expanding [her] family in new ways.” “I want to safely meet our children and then figure out how to talk about it,” she …

Seth Rogen Says Film ‘Babies’ With Wife Lauren Directing Was ‘Personal’

Seth Rogen Says Film ‘Babies’ With Wife Lauren Directing Was ‘Personal’

Seth Rogen has starred in films that mirror his life, but none have hit as close to home as Babies.  Directed and written by Lauren Miller Rogen, the comedy drama follows a husband (Seth) and wife (Anna Kendrick) who are questioning whether parenthood is the right path for them. For married couple Seth and Lauren, the film was a deeply personal project that reflected their own journey toward a child-free life.   “ I think this movie is much more personal and much more reflective of my actual experiences,” Seth said at The Hollywood Reporter’s Studio at 1 Hotel during TIFF, presented by sponsor Canada Goose, on Saturday. “I think Lauren has really made a very honest film in regards to her thought process and our thought process as a couple. When I look at it, it’s shocking how personal it is, honestly, and about very personal things in our lives. But, to me, it’s very brave to put yourself out there like that and to write about the things that are kind of the most …

Now They Think Babies Can Be Racist…

Now They Think Babies Can Be Racist…

Authored by Steve Watson via Modernity News, A woman sat in front of a camera this week and told the internet she had witnessed a “racist baby”… Not a joke account. Not a sketch. A straight-faced lecture about an infant who looked at someone for a few seconds – and, in her telling, revealed the original sin of race hatred barely out of the womb. The woman declares that “watching children mirror racist behavior is WILD.” She describes a baby staring at her ‘friend of colour’, the mother looking stricken, and then announces that the child is “literally mimicking” hostility toward “black and brown people.” This retard says she saw a “racist baby” This person is a legit retard.. this is somehow not a joke. Unbelievable pic.twitter.com/R5UUfig5AN — Retard Finder (@IfindRetards) September 10, 2026 She also flashes a 2012 Science Daily headline as if it were a conviction. This is the new priesthood. A baby looks at a black person and the verdict is racism. Anyone who has any experience at all with babies knows …

According to a report published in 2024, experts estimate their population in the country at a range of 12,616 to 15,132 individuals, which wildlife biologist Thomas Sharp calls “a healthy number.” Part of their success could be due to the fact that leopards are enduring in areas close to human settlements where their bigger feline relatives, like tigers or lions, simply can’t—partly thanks to their secretive nature and the fact that they subsist on smaller prey. “This is a good thing in many ways, with the way the world’s been changing and habitat degradation and everything else,” Sharp, who is the director of conservation and research at the organization Wildlife SOS tells Popular Science. “It’s a good thing that they can hang on in some of these areas. But there’s always a tradeoff, and the negative is they get involved in a lot of human-leopard conflict.” Unsurprisingly, …

Earth’s largest otters have chocolate bar-sized babies

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. It turns out that giant otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) newborns are actually quite small, weighing just around 7.1 ounces. “[That’s] about the same as a decent-sized chocolate bar,” Frazer Walsh, a carnivore keeper at Chester Zoo outside of Liverpool, England, tells Popular Science.  The zoo has just welcomed three of their own decent-sized chocolate bars, the offspring of mother Bonita and father Manu. The three siblings haven’t received names yet. Before the birth, the zoo’s staff cordoned off the giant otter habitat before their birth, and kept a non-invasive eye on the soon-to-be family using cameras. In fact, it was through these cameras that they discovered that the litter had arrived, but they continued giving the family privacy throughout the pups’ time as newborns.  “We like to make sure it’s as natural as possible. That means the parents are allowed to carry on their natural behaviours before and after the pups arrive and no keepers go into their holt [den],” …

Jackie and Shadow’s 2026 babies: Everything you need to know about the new eaglets

Get the Popular Science daily newsletter💡 Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent six days a week. It’s been another roller coaster nesting season for Jackie and Shadow, a pair of internet-famous bald eagle parents living in San Bernardino National Forest in Southern California. After two of their eggs were destroyed by ravens in January, Jackie and Shadow laid two new eggs that have successfully hatched. Chick 1 hatched on April 4 at 9:33 p.m. PDT, while Chick 2 followed on April 5 at 8:30 a.m. Their large nest in Big Bear Valley east of Los Angeles is livestreamed 24 hours a day by nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV) and has captivated millions.  Big Bear Bald Eagle Live Nest – Cam 1 According to FOBBV, Jackie and Shadow have alternated sitting with the chicks and hunting for fish in Big Bear Lake. When a rain storm rolled in yesterday, Jackie kept the chicks warm until the weather cleared up.  The siblings have also been seen pecking and pushing each other during some of their …

Babies review | Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen are heartbreaking

Babies review | Paapa Essiedu and Siobhán Cullen are heartbreaking

A star rating of 4 out of 5. This article contains mention of pregnancy loss and miscarriage that some readers may find distressing. It’s rare that I can say a drama absolutely won’t be for everybody, but perhaps should be – that is the case with Babies. It won’t be for everybody for two reasons. The first is that it is a new drama from Stefan Golaszewski, the master of unerring slice of life drama. I gave his last series, Marriage, a five-star review, believing, as I still do, that it was an exceptional piece of work. Once it was released into the wider world, many viewers disagreed, and took against it fervently. Babies has a similar pace, tone and structure to that series, so I can already say with some degree of certainty that those who were unimpressed by Marriage will have similar feelings here. The second reason is that it deals with the subject of repeated pregnancy loss and miscarriage, and does so in a way which is raw and unflinching. This topic …

Doulas can improve health outcomes for women and babies. Insurers are taking notice.

Doulas can improve health outcomes for women and babies. Insurers are taking notice.

Like many first-time moms, Nathalia Marin Torres was excited when she found out she was pregnant last August, but she was also a bit nervous. The 33-year-old Colombia native didn’t click with her OB-GYN and felt like she needed more support navigating the health care system in the United States. “When you’re kind of far away from family and from your culture, it’s a little bit overwhelming,” Torres said. She was referred to Alexia Franco Pettersen, a Mexican American doula in Minneapolis. Pettersen is helping guide Torres through prenatal visits and preparing for postpartum. She’ll be there for the entirety of her labor and delivery, whenever and however long that may be, and provide support after the birth as well. Torres likened it to the extra support she would get if she were back in Colombia with her family. The decision to work with a doula was made easier when she learned that Pettersen’s $2,400 cost would be covered by her insurance. This year, UnitedHealthcare became the first major insurer to start adding a doula …
