A section of the 870-mile Wales Coast Path has been closed off due to anti-social behaviour presenting a possible safety risk. Officials are now working to find an alternative for the closed section through Baglan, Briton Ferry and Sandfields West.
In a letter to local councillors in Neath Port Talbot, the Welsh Government confirmed that following a site visit involving government and local council officials, part of the route was closed off.
They said both parties were satisfied that the original route presents a safety risk and attracts anti-social behaviour. Stay informed on everything Neath Port Talbot by signing up to our newsletter here.
The letter, by Llyr Gruffydd MS, said they had identified a potential option for re-routing the path in the area instead, to provide an “improved user experience”.
No further details were given about what a change to the route would look like. Instead, the sustainability minister said the option was being explored further, adding that Welsh Government officials needed longer to undertake investigations on alternatives.
The Wales Coast Path website states: “The Wales Coast Path splits in two around Port Talbot.
“The stretch running beside Swansea Bay has been partly diverted inland, while another option involves traversing the hills above the town, enjoying views of the coastline from a distance. Combining both routes creates an interesting circular walk.”
The Wales Coast Path is a stunning trail that runs around the entire coastline of Wales. The path is managed by Natural Resources Wales in close partnership with the various local authorities and Welsh Government.
As well as providing health and wellbeing benefits, the path also boosts local tourism with many opting to travel far and wide to enjoy some of the stunning coastal walks Wales has to offer.
