An emu ranch worker in Bonne Terre, Missouri, USA, helped a chick hatch after it struggled for 36 hours to break free from its egg. Ariel, 28, noticed the chick chirping from inside the shell on February 2 but became concerned when it stopped making progress and fell silent. Fearing the bird could suffocate, she carefully broke away parts of the thick shell until the chick, later named Ringo, was freed. Ariel said the intervention was stressful but successful, adding that the chick is now thriving.
