Halloween Romance Books, from Cozy to Creepy to Scary

Is there any season more atmospheric than fall? From pumpkin-spiced everything to sweet potato pancakes and the crisp autumn air, it’s a season full of iconic delights. It’s also the perfect time for romance books, and I’m not just talking about your love life. Fall is a favorite setting for romance, and it’s not hard to see why. The temperatures are cooling, the holidays are coming, and everybody wants a good seasonal love story to enjoy by the bonfire. Writers love them, readers love them, and publishers clearly do, too. I mean, just take a look around the bookstore and new release lists: Halloween romance books are, quite literally, everywhere.

From cozy rom-coms and paranormal romance to full-on horromance (yes, it’s a thing), fall has some of the best and most varied subgenres of romance to offer. Whether you prefer your frights on the light side or want to be fully terrified, Halloween romance reads have something on offer for everybody. The world of Halloween romance viewed in this way is so vast, in fact, that narrowing my recommendations down to even ten titles was a challenge. I wanted to include all my cozy autumnal favorites, like A Witch’s Guide to Magical Innkeeping and How to Lose a Goblin in Ten Days, and the best gothic horror romances by the likes of Silvia Moreno-Garcia and Isabel Cañas. But I also wanted to feature some newer and potentially less well-known titles. Think of it as a little Halloween treat. So whether you’re a cozy romance girlie or a dark romance fiend, keep reading to find the perfect fright level for your Halloween romance reads.

Cozy Halloween Romance Books

Just pure, sweet autumnal vibes.

Take a Chance, Sasha Sinclair by Ashley Herring Blake

The Queen of Sapphic Romance, Ashley Herring Blake, is back with a cozy fall romp set in small-town North Carolina. After losing her parents in a car crash three years ago, Sasha Sinclair is determined to continue their legacy as documentary filmmakers, and she’s set her sights on her next big project: Alice Bishop. Margot Bishop, despite her family’s struggling business, is not interested in some wannabe documentarian’s take on the Bishop family legacy. Sure, her ancestor was believed to be a witch, but all she wants is to keep her family’s apothecary and occult-themed amusement park afloat here and now. Falling for the annoyingly upbeat woman trying to make her name off of Margot’s family is not part of the plan—but it might be in the cards regardless.

The Fall Fix Up book cover

The Fall Fix Up by Karmen Lee

In the small town of Peach Blossom, romance will find you in the unlikeliest of places. When a house fire leaves mechanic Aiden homeless and artist Janae living in a half-finished house, they agree to a practical solution: Aiden will help finish the building in exchange for a place to stay. Neither of them was expecting it to turn into something more, but it’s impossible to deny the sparks when they’re living together under one roof. When secrets from their pasts threaten their future, they’ll have to decide whether this is a love worth fighting for or simply a fall fling.

Deja Brew book cover

Deja Brew by Celestine Martin

From Celestine Martin’s witchy romance series also featuring Witchful Thinking and Kiss and Spell comes a delightfully autumnal rom-com about a former celebrity chef whose powers are on the fritz and a one-time reality TV star with a serious crush. When Sirena makes a wish for a second chance to fix her life, she finds herself repeating the entire month—but this time, she’s determined to get it right. She’s only thinking about saving her career and her reputation, but when Gus offers to help her get her magic back on track, she realizes it may be a chance for something even more.

Dead and Breakfast book cover

Dead & Breakfast by Kat Hillis and Rosiee Thor

Arthur and Sal are a totally normal (undead) couple opening up a B&B in small-town Oregon. They want nothing more than to become a part of the community, even if that community is a little less than friendly to its new supernatural neighbors. But when the mayor turns up dead in their begonias with puncture marks in his neck, they’ll have to team up with the other magical members of their community to solve the murder and prove their hands are entirely clean.
