Southampton tackle their first competitive fixture since being kicked out of the Championship play-offs when they face Colchester United in the Carabao Cup first round on Saturday evening.
Saints’s ‘spygate’ shame saw them axed from last season’s Wembley final and head coach Tonda Eckert is waiting to hear a verdict after being charged by the FA, although he retains the backing of owner Dragan Solak.
A low-key victory against lower-league opposition would be the ideal start for Southampton, who reached last year’s third round, as they bid to put the controversy behind them.
Saints are hot favourites to progress as Colchester finished 12th in last season’s League Two table and crashed out of the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle.
The U’s failed to win their last four pre-season fixtures and head coach Danny Cowley is hunting for new signings ahead of their league campaign starting next weekend.
