Has Trump’s Starlink blame game exposed a bigger problem for Ukraine and Europe?

Has Trump’s Starlink blame game exposed a bigger problem for Ukraine and Europe?

Published by Sam Flores

Donald Trump has denied responsibility for restricting Ukraine’s use of the military version of Starlink, insisting “it’s the same as it’s always been”. Yet Ukraine was blindsided on Wednesday when Starshield began experiencing signal failures at speeds above 160kph, leaving the country suddenly unable to shoot down Russian jet-powered drones. Starshield forms the backbone of Ukraine’s air defence systems and its access to the system also gives it a technological edge over Russia, which lost access following its invasion. Ukrainian officials are reportedly negotiating with the White House to regain unrestricted access, but the lack of equivalent systems among its European allies means Kyiv could be forced into uncomfortable choices if Trump decides to push for concessions in his bid to end the war. What if ADHD isn’t about attention at all? It might be more about motivation and staying engaged

What if ADHD isn’t about attention at all? It might be more about motivation and staying engaged

As a psychiatrist, I increasingly see people seeking help for a familiar constellation of troubles. They have a hard time staying focused. They often forget things. They suffer from disorganisation, restlessness and impulsivity. They struggle with spreadsheets and memos, with laundry and food preparation, with showing up at appointments and meeting deadlines – with tackling, in other words, the necessities of daily life. Frequently, these patients view their problems as ones of “attention,” as more people identify with the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. The rise in ADHD diagnoses – along with the use of prescribed stimulants like Ritalin – has led to great debate among the public and within psychiatry. Has the medical establishment finally recognised a long-overlooked disorder? Or has the diagnosis become too capacious, overmedicalising ordinary difficulties? But this debate runs up against a fundamental scientific uncertainty. “Attention deficit” may be the wrong conceptual framing for ADHD. Scientists have been exploring a more basic quandary: What is the condition in the first place? A major study published last year in the journal Cell …

Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) husband snapped at reporters after being confronted over rumors that the Minnesota Democrat fled the United States following a federal raid on the couple’s Washington, D.C., home. Tim Mynett, a political consultant married to the far-left congresswoman, was approached by a Fox News reporter while walking the couple’s dog Wednesday evening. “There are rumors that the congresswoman left the country, is that true?” a reporter asked. Mynett sidestepped the question and expressed frustration with the media presence outside their residence. “You guys are annoying the hell out of all the neighbors around here, man,” he barked. Elon Musk shows off ‘flying’ Tesla Roadster after years of delays

Elon Musk showed off a new vehicle prototype Thursday that can briefly launch itself into the air using rocket-inspired thrusters. The Tesla Roadster made its debut eight years after it was first announced. The company has yet to announce a price or release date, though the Tesla and SpaceX CEO said production would not begin until 2028. In a stunt-filled demonstration at a SpaceX testing facility in Texas, Musk told the live audience that what they were about to see “was not AI or SI.” The vehicle, a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX, then slowly drove up a curved ramp shaped like half of a roller coaster loop before accelerating and launching itself off the ramp, hurdling over five other Tesla vehicles and bringing itself to a soft landing in a cloud of condensation using cold-gas thrusters. “Well, it worked!” Musk said after the stunt, adding that “it’s not necessarily a safety-optimized car.” Tesla Tesla says a fan-based suction system creates downforce to hold the vehicle against the road’s surface, while self-refilling cold-gas thrusters power …

Great Eastern Women’s Run cancelled due to worsening haze

Published by Sam Flores

SINGAPORE: The Great Eastern Women’s Run, scheduled to be held on Nov 1, has been cancelled due to worsening air quality.  The decision was made to safeguard the health of participants, staff and volunteers, the organiser said on its website on Friday (Oct 16). “It is not ideal for our participants, especially young children and elderly, to participate under unfavourable weather conditions,” it added. The run is Southeast Asia’s largest all-women’s running event. More than 12,000 participants have registered for this year’s event.  The event’s organiser said it had considered the prevailing and expected conditions, the prospect of haze persisting through to early November, and the potential health impact of prolonged outdoor physical activity. On whether the run could have proceeded with additional precautions, the organiser said participants, staff and volunteers would still need to spend extended periods outdoors and air quality could also change.  “We did not believe that programme or distance changes would provide enough certainty to proceed safely,” it said. The decision was made to cancel the run now instead of waiting …

Central bankers eye higher rates as AI boom fuels scramble for cash

Published by Sam Flores

BANGKOK, Oct 16 : The artificial intelligence boom is setting off a global race for money, forcing central bankers to contemplate a future in which interest rates stay higher and governments need to tighten their belts after an era of largesse. From silicon chips and data centres to power grids and telecoms networks, governments and companies are pouring money into projects tied directly or indirectly to AI, adding fuel to the global economy and pushing up borrowing costs. Central bankers from the world’s largest economies gathering in Bangkok said the boom was also creating fresh inflation pressures and financial risks, because the investment is arriving long before the productivity gains AI promises. “If you’re a central banker…you’ve got to recognise this as a shock,” Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh said at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank in Bangkok. “It’s obviously hitting the demand side of the economy before it’s going to hit the supply side.” Warsh, who said the US was benefiting from a broadening “surge of investment”, warned …
