Taylor Swift Released Her First Album 20 Years Ago Today

There’s one detail that, looking back on it today, reveals a lot about the future queen of pop. Before releasing her album, the singer had secured a development deal with RCA Records, but when she realized that the path proposed by the label might mean more waiting and less creative freedom, she decided not to proceed. A bold choice for a young girl who hadn’t yet released an album. But even then, Swift knew exactly what she wanted: to sing her own songs, tell her own stories, and make her own decisions on what her voice should sound like.

A meeting with Scott Borchetta changed the course of her career. The music executive was preparing to launch Big Machine Records, and he immediately recognized Swift’s potential. Swift was his new label’s first signed artist, and the rest, as they say, is music history. But it’s also a great lesson in stubbornness applied to business.

Among the tracks on her debut album is “The Outside,” which Swift wrote when she was just 12 years old. The theme? Loneliness, feeling different, the sensation of watching the world from the outside while everyone else seems to know exactly where they’re going. This is where we catch a glimpse of one of the secrets to her success: Taylor Swift has never tried to recount extraordinary experiences, but rather ordinary ones—often painful and embarrassing—which she transforms into songs that millions of people find relatable. A formula that, twenty years later, continues to work. Loves, cities, and musical genres may change, but that girl who felt left out has never really stopped writing.

I studied medicine at Trinity College, Oxford, and qualified as a doctor. There are already many excellent blogs exploring faith, humanism, atheism, politics, rationalism, philosophical doubt and everything in between. But I don't intend to limit myself to any particular subject. This is simply a space where I'll share whatever comes to mind, whether it's something I've been thinking about for years or just a passing thought from the day.
