The New Yorker and Jackson Arn Part Ways after 100th Anniversary Party

The New Yorker and Jackson Arn Part Ways after 100th Anniversary Party

The New Yorker’s art critic since 2023, Jackson Arn, has been let go following complaints of “inappropriate overtures” at the magazine’s 100th anniversary party last month, according to the New York Times.  Two people who were at the event, which was held at Jean’s on Lafayette Street in Manhattan’s NoHo neighborhood, told the Times that Arn appeared “intoxicated” and that he was indecorous with “some of the guests.” Attendees at the party reportedly included the upper crust of the literary and journalistic contributors to the magazine, including former editor Tina Brown, Columbia Journalism School dean Jelani Cobb, and Art Spiegelman, the cartoonist and author of the groundbreaking graphic novel Maus.  Arn, who before the New Yorker wrote criticism for outlets like Art in America, Artforum, the Nation, and the New Statesman, succeeded art critic Peter Schjeldahl, who wrote for the New Yorker from 1998 until his death in 2022. For the New Yorker, Arn covered far-reaching corners of the art world, from tattoo conventions to Brancusi sculptures, wrote book reviews about legendary artists, and commented on the aesthetics of cult action flicks. Arn declined to comment. A spokesperson …

Faith to Faithless marks 10th anniversary with powerful new animation

Faith to Faithless marks 10th anniversary with powerful new animation

Humanists UK is celebrating ten years of its groundbreaking Faith to Faithless service with the release of a moving new animation created in partnership with OOF Animation. The short film vividly captures the emotional and psychological turmoil faced by people attempting to leave high-control religions and cults. Using the imagery of a labyrinth and a guiding lifeline, the animation illustrates the confusion, isolation, and hope that define this difficult journey for thousands of vulnerable adults in the UK. For many, the journey out of a restrictive religious environment can be confusing, isolating, and fraught with fear. The animation highlights these challenges while also delivering a message of hope: with the right support, no one has to walk this path alone. This milestone year also highlights the growing demand for Faith to Faithless’s life-saving support. Last month, Humanists UK reported that in its first year alone, the service’s ground-breaking helpline has supported hundreds of people escaping high-control religions and cults. Many callers have faced extreme isolation, coercion, domestic abuse, and even threats of violence.  Others have …

Sikkema Jenkins & Co. Changes Name on Anniversary of Founder’s Death

New York-based gallery Sikkema Jenkins & Co. has been renamed Sikkema Malloy Jenkins. The gallery in a press release said that the change recognizes partner Meg Malloy’s over two-decade contribution to its development alongside founder Brent Sikkema and Michael Jenkins. The renaming was approved in 2023 before Sikkema’s murder in January 2024. The gallery, originally founded in 1991 as Wooster Gardens in Soho, has grown to represent more than 30 artists including established names such as Kara Walker, Vik Muniz, and Arturo Herrera, as well as newer talents like Heidi Lau and Keltie Ferris. The gallery is known for its early support of underrepresented artists, including women, artists of color, and queer artists. In a press release announcing the name change Malloy said “both Michael and I remain dedicated to the gallery’s independent spirit and strong commitment to its artists that was foundational to Brent’s original vision.” Malloy, who joined the gallery in 2002, became a partner in 2005.  Jenkins, who joined the gallery as a director in 1997 and was named partner in 2003, said  there was broad …

Ross Kemp returning to EastEnders as Grant Mitchell for soap’s 40th anniversary | UK News

Ross Kemp is returning to Albert Square in celebration of EastEnders’ 40th anniversary. The 60-year-old first made his debut as Grant Mitchell in 1990 and has returned to the soap a number of times over the past 35 years. He last appeared in the show in 2016 but will reprise his role this year in what the BBC has described as an “explosive” storyline. Kemp said: “I’m delighted to be returning to EastEnders as the show heads towards its 40th anniversary. “EastEnders has always meant so much to me, so to return as the show is about to celebrate such a special anniversary is an absolute honour. “Grant has never been far from the action and, let’s just say, this time is no different as he certainly comes back with a bang.” EastEnders first aired on 19 February 1985. The character of Grant will return to the show as his brother Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) struggles with loneliness. The pair’s childhood best friend Nigel Bates (Paul Bradley) has also recently returned to the square after …

News Bites: From Fake Picassos to Lucy’s 50th Anniversary

News Bites: From Fake Picassos to Lucy’s 50th Anniversary

Museum Curator Reveals Fake Picassos. On July 10, 2024, museum curator Kirsha Kaechele admitted that she painted fake Picassos and displayed them in the women’s restroom at the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Tasmania, Australia. When she first hung the paintings, she assumed her trickery would be revealed right away. “I waited for weeks,” she wrote. “Nothing happened. I was sure it would blow up. But it didn’t.” She even “fantasized there would be a scandal.” It took over three years before she finally came clean. (For more, see “‘Childish and Unprofessional’: Art Experts Say MONA’s Fake-Picasso Stunt May Undermine Gallery’s Reputation” at theguardian.com.) ‘Slapping Therapy’ Promoter Found Guilty—Again. On July 26, 2024, a Winchester crown court jury in England found Hongchi Xiao, sixty-one, of California, guilty of the gross negligence manslaughter of seventy-one-year-old Danielle Carr-Gomm, a British woman. Apple Watch X? September 9 Event Date Marks 10th Anniversary

Apple Watch X? September 9 Event Date Marks 10th Anniversary

On September 9, 2014, towards the end of Apple’s iPhone 6 press event, CEO Tim Cook announced “one more thing,” and after a brief video, appeared on stage wearing the first Apple Watch. The date of the original device’s unveiling has led some to wonder whether Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 event on Monday, September 9 could see a special tenth anniversary version of the Apple Watch debut. The first chatter about a possible “Apple Watch X” appeared back in January 2023, when a French report claimed that Apple planned to skip the Apple Watch Series 9, much like the company did when it launched the iPhone X instead of an iPhone 9 model in 2017. Pronounced “ten,” the “X” branding referred to the iPhone’s 10th anniversary. That didn’t happen. Indeed, if “Apple Watch X” had launched in 2023, only nine years would have elapsed since Cook unveiled the original model, which is why the rumor was branded “sketchy.” For the “X” branding to logically make sense, Apple would have to announce it in 2024 – …

‘Seven years wasted’: Grenfell bereaved fight for evacuation plans on anniversary | Grenfell Tower fire

When Shah Aghlani helped his mother, Sakina Afrasehabi, move into flat 151 of Grenfell Tower in 2016, he was full of concern. Afrasehabi was partially sighted, had severe arthritis and walked with the aid of a frame, yet she was housed on the 18th floor of the 23-storey building. “I felt scared because it was so high up in the air,” Aghlani recalls. “My fears turned out not to be baseless.” Just a year after moving, on 14 June 2017, Grenfell Tower was engulfed in flames in one of the worst disasters to happen in modern history in the UK. On the night of the fire, Aghlani rushed to the tower after receiving a distressed phone call at 1.20am from his aunt, Fatima, who was staying with his mother. “There was smoke at the top of the building. The fire was fierce,” Aghlani described in his witness statement to the inquiry into the disaster. “I was trying to keep them calm and the smoke suddenly got them. I heard every last breath my mother and …
