Saoirse Ronan reveals James Bond villain ambitions: “I want to go dark”

Ever since her breakout role in Atonement at the age of just 13, Saoirse Ronan has impressed in a huge range of projects, and it sounds like the Lady Bird and Little Women star could be about to embark on a new stage in her career.

In a new interview with Empire ahead of the release of her new film Bad Apples, Ronan revealed that she wants “to go dark” – and there’s one role in particular that she’s got her eyes on.

“I said that I wanted to be a Bond villain – and I’m dead serious,” she said. “I think it would be really interesting, having a young female villain.

“Especially for girls and women, to see someone who can just take all that pent-up anger and direct it somewhere, there’s something interesting in that dramatically. So I would love to do more of that.”

Of course, the pitch is especially interesting given that Ronan’s husband, Slow Horses star Jack Lowden, is currently one of the frontrunners to be cast as the new 007.

Perhaps they could even face off against each other in Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming film?

Ronan’s new film Bad Apples – which originally premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival – opens in UK cinemas on 18 September, and is a dark comedy thriller which sees her starring as a primary school teacher.

The official synopsis for the film reads: “Maria Spencer (Ronan) is a teacher at a primary school in Somerset, England, finding her class of 10-year-olds disrupted by one unruly pupil and, after an escalation of events, kidnaps the boy and locks him in her basement where she cares for him herself while he is searched for by the authorities.”

Ronan’s other recent credits include Blitz and The Outrun, while she has recently been filming Sam Mendes’s four upcoming Beatles films, in which she will play Linda McCartney.

Meanwhile, she also has a role alongside Dakota Johnson, Jessie Buckley, Josh O’Connor and Isabella Rossellini in The Three Incestuous Sisters, the next film from La Chimera director Alice Rohrwacher.

I studied medicine at Trinity College, Oxford, and qualified as a doctor. There are already many excellent blogs exploring faith, humanism, atheism, politics, rationalism, philosophical doubt and everything in between. But I don't intend to limit myself to any particular subject. This is simply a space where I'll share whatever comes to mind, whether it's something I've been thinking about for years or just a passing thought from the day.
