In the pantheon of impossible-to-get hype objects, the new Audemars Piguet x Swatch Royal Pop pocket watch has already entered rarefied territory. Over launch weekend, social media feeds filled with overnight campouts, mall-security interventions, store closures, and resale listings that ballooned to many multiples of retail before most people had even seen one in person.
For GQ readers, the obvious question remains: How exactly are you supposed to get one?
The good news is that if you survived Beanie Baby mania, sneaker drops in the 2010s, or the more recent MoonSwatch frenzy, this all looks very familiar. One might assume from the chaos of launch weekend that securing a Royal Pop allocation is essentially impossible. We’re fairly confident that’s not actually the case—or, at least, that it won’t be the case forever. History suggests that “impossible to get” and “difficult to get right now” are usually two very different things.
Below, a practical FAQ for navigating the hottest watch release on the planet.
First of all: What is the Royal Pop?
The Royal Pop is the first collaboration between Audemars Piguet and Swatch, pairing AP’s unmistakable Royal Oak DNA with Swatch’s playful, accessible approach to collectible watch drops. The collection consists of eight colorful Bioceramic pocket watches powered by a hand-wound SISTEM51 movement.
The twist—and the source of much internet discourse—is that it’s a pocket watch rather than a wristwatch. That surprise reveal meant that this went beyond a wristwatch launch to the debut of an accessory that can be worn pretty much everywhere.
Can I just walk into a Swatch store and buy one?
Technically? Yes. Realistically? No. At least not yet.
At the moment, the Royal Pop is available only through select Swatch boutiques, and stock appears to vary by location. Some stores reportedly received tiny launch allocations and closed fairly quickly after selling out. Other shops didn’t get a chance to open at all due to crowd control issues. At other locations, (slightly) more civilized conditions and what can be assumed to be a larger allocation led to what appears to be a more normal rollout.
That said, launch-weekend conditions are rarely permanent. The MoonSwatch was once treated like a mythical object; now, determined buyers can typically walk into their local Swatch and grab their favorite flavor.
In stores that sold out, when will they be restocked?
This is currently the million-dollar question—or, more accurately, the $400 question.
Swatch has not announced a formal restock calendar, but company messaging strongly suggests additional waves are coming. The official message is that the Royal Pop is not a traditional limited edition and will continue being produced and sold for at least several months. (Also: Don’t try calling a Swatch store to inquire about stock levels or restocking. Many stores have automated messaging systems set up telling you that for security reasons, they can’t comment. And good luck getting a human on the phone, anyway!)
In other words: if your local boutique sold out on day one, don’t panic.
