Davidovich Fokina overcomes Jodar to claim Shanghai crown

SHANGHAI, Oct 18 : Alejandro Davidovich Fokina ended Rafael Jodar’s dream run at the Shanghai Masters on Sunday, battling back to beat his fellow Spaniard 1-6 7-6(5) 6-4 and clinch the biggest title of his career. The 25th-seeded Davidovich Fokina is set to climb 13 places to a career-high world number 13 when the rankings are released on Monday. Jodar, playing in his first Masters 1000 final and the youngest Shanghai finalist in tournament history, made a blistering start, broke for a 2-0 lead and again to take the opening set. Davidovich Fokina recovered from a break down in the second set and saved break points in three successive service games before edging a tight tiebreak to force a decider. The momentum swung decisively in Davidovich Fokina’s favour when he broke the 12th-seeded Jodar twice and sealed victory in two hours and 27 minutes. “I have a blank mind,” Davidovich Fokina said. “I don’t know what to say and I don’t know how I feel. Gaza Family Reunion: Finding each other after the ‘ceasefire’ | Israel-Palestine conflict

Separated by war for more than a year, a captain in Gaza’s Civil Defence unit attempts to reunite with his family. A day after a “ceasefire” is announced, Captain Moumen’s family sets off on Gaza’s long coastal road, carrying everything they own on their backs. They leave the Nuseirat refugee camp, where they have been taking refuge from constant bombing and head north, where Moumen awaits their arrival. As Moumen’s wife and children trek through difficult terrain, he waits anxiously at the end of the road. With no signal to call and hundreds of thousands of people crossing, trying to locate them becomes an impossible mission. Gaza Family Reunion is a documentary film by Mohammed Sawwaf, Salah al-Haw, Ibrahim al-Otla and Mohammed Masharawi. France: Who took part in Saturday's protests?

Weeks of student protests over poor conditions in schools and rising anger over the cost of living fuelled calls for a nationwide demonstration on October 17, bringing together youth activists and supporters of the Yellow Vest movement. The main grievance was the cost of living. The protesters demonstrating against it ‘didn’t get what they wanted’, analyses France 24’s Shirli Sitbon. Source link

Eight surprising signs of ADHD you haven’t heard of

Eight surprising signs of ADHD you haven’t heard of

While headlines are full of claims of overdiagnosis, many people who receive an ADHD diagnosis describe it as life-changing, life-affirming or, in some cases, life-saving. Many say they finally feel seen, understood, or are just glad to know they are not alone.  Women and girls with ADHD in particular have been overlooked for decades, according to Dr Sally Cubbin, a consultant psychiatrist with over 30 years of expertise working with patients with ADHD, and Gillian Johnson Shakespeare, ADHD coach, writer and illustrator. Both are authors of Women and ADHD: From Puberty to Menopause and Beyond. Johnson experienced her own “aha” moment after being diagnosed with ADHD at 59. The rise in referrals among adult women for ADHD in recent years is “less about a sudden epidemic [of] ADHD in perimenopausal (or menopausal) women, than a reflection of the change in what now gets noticed, as well as some overdue catching up”, Cubbin and Johnson say. “A diagnosis can be a profound turning point. For many adults, especially women later in life, it finally explains why things …

“Replacing Europe”: Undercover Film Follows The Money Behind Europe’s Taxpayer-Funded Mass Migration Pipeline

A new documentary from investigative outlet Muckraker traces the migrant route from West Africa through Spain and France to Britain, examining what the outlet describes as a network sustained by taxpayer-funded aid programs, NGOs, and even Western governments. The 47-minute film, “Replacing Europe,” draws on months of reporting and undercover footage to investigate the logistics and top NGO players behind the nation-killing mass migration into Europe.  “The entire migration is a game,” says Sheikh M. Kromah, identified by Muckraker as a worker for the UN’s International Organization for Migration. He alleges that Spain has a financial incentive to maintain arrivals because reducing them could jeopardize EU funding. Muckraker claims that publicly funded institutions help sustain the migration flows that European governments publicly promise to control. Its interviews raise questions about oversight, spending incentives and the boundary between humanitarian assistance and facilitating illegal alien border crossings into Europe.  The broader concern is whether mass migration, malassimilation, and soaring public costs of the European welfare state that cater to migrants could compound fiscal pressure and political instability.  Here is Muckraker’s report: A UN …

Has Trump’s Starlink blame game exposed a bigger problem for Ukraine and Europe?

Has Trump’s Starlink blame game exposed a bigger problem for Ukraine and Europe?

Donald Trump has denied responsibility for restricting Ukraine’s use of the military version of Starlink, insisting “it’s the same as it’s always been”. Yet Ukraine was blindsided on Wednesday when Starshield began experiencing signal failures at speeds above 160kph, leaving the country suddenly unable to shoot down Russian jet-powered drones. Starshield forms the backbone of Ukraine’s air defence systems and its access to the system also gives it a technological edge over Russia, which lost access following its invasion. Ukrainian officials are reportedly negotiating with the White House to regain unrestricted access, but the lack of equivalent systems among its European allies means Kyiv could be forced into uncomfortable choices if Trump decides to push for concessions in his bid to end the war. What is Starshield and who restricted Ukraine’s access? Starshield is a military version of SpaceX’s Starlink network, it has separate fees and terms from the civilian satellite service, as well as a more stable, higher priority connection. SpaceX owner, Elon Musk, agreed to suspend Russian access to the network following Vladimir …

What if ADHD isn’t about attention at all? It might be more about motivation and staying engaged

What if ADHD isn’t about attention at all? It might be more about motivation and staying engaged

As a psychiatrist, I increasingly see people seeking help for a familiar constellation of troubles. They have a hard time staying focused. They often forget things. They suffer from disorganisation, restlessness and impulsivity. They struggle with spreadsheets and memos, with laundry and food preparation, with showing up at appointments and meeting deadlines – with tackling, in other words, the necessities of daily life. Frequently, these patients view their problems as ones of “attention,” as more people identify with the diagnosis of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. The rise in ADHD diagnoses – along with the use of prescribed stimulants like Ritalin – has led to great debate among the public and within psychiatry. Has the medical establishment finally recognised a long-overlooked disorder? Or has the diagnosis become too capacious, overmedicalising ordinary difficulties? But this debate runs up against a fundamental scientific uncertainty. “Attention deficit” may be the wrong conceptual framing for ADHD. Scientists have been exploring a more basic quandary: What is the condition in the first place? A major study published last year in the journal Cell …
