The Download: Workplace surveillance, and fighting EV fires

The Download: Workplace surveillance, and fighting EV fires

Working today—whether in an office, a warehouse, or your car—can mean constant electronic surveillance with little transparency, and potentially with livelihood-ending consequences if your productivity flags.  But what matters even more than the effects of this ubiquitous monitoring on privacy may be how all that data is shifting the relationships between workers and managers, companies and their workforce.  We are in the midst of a shift in work and workplace relationships as significant as the Second Industrial Revolution of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. And new policies and protections may be necessary to correct the balance of power. Read the full story.  —Rebecca Ackermann One option for electric vehicle fires? Let them burn. Although there isn’t solid data on the frequency of EV battery fires, it’s no secret that these fires are happening. Despite that, manufacturers offer no standardized steps on how to fight them or avoid them in the first place. What’s more, with EVs, it’s never entirely clear whether the fire is truly out. Cars may ignite, or reignite, weeks or …

Most Workplace Dress Codes are Immoral

Most Workplace Dress Codes are Immoral

As a college student, I worked at an amusement park for a couple of summers. Part of my job was to check that employees met the dress code requirements on their way in: solid black shoes, khaki pants or shorts, no hair extending beyond the collar for men, no ‘unnatural’ hair colors, no piercings other than one per ear lobe for women, etc. Employees knowingly flouted these requirements frequently, and there was often palpable resentment toward me and the other employees whose job it was to enforce them. It was not uncommon for employees to be sent home because of dress code violations—an outcome they could have easily predicted given their knowledge of the requirements. As a result, they would waste their time commuting, fail to earn a wage for the day, and get a negative mark on their record for missing their shift. Employees in my department often viewed the choice of others to violate the dress code policies as irrational; they saw the desire for self-expression as frivolous and immature, and perhaps even …

This common workplace phenomenon could be secretly undermining your productivity

This common workplace phenomenon could be secretly undermining your productivity

A recent study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology reveals that overhearing political conversations in the workplace can lead to negative emotional experiences for employees, particularly when they perceive their coworkers to have different political views. These overheard discussions can create emotional stress and distract employees, ultimately affecting their job satisfaction and ability to accomplish work goals. The workplace is a natural environment for political discussions, particularly during elections or politically charged times. However, while such conversations may be voluntary for participants, they often take place in public spaces, meaning others nearby may overhear them without wanting to engage. The researchers sought to understand how and why these “ambient political conversations” affect employees who are not directly involved in the discussions. While prior studies have largely focused on the direct participants in political conversations, this research aims to address the hidden costs for those who merely overhear these conversations in the workplace. The researchers conducted three separate studies to investigate the effects of ambient political conversations on employees. The goal was to test two …

5 Shady Signs You’re Being Bullied At Work Because You’re A Woman, Reveals Career Coach | GalTime Writers

By Suzanne Kleinberg Even though the Civil Rights Act (and other state legislation) protects women from workplace bullying and gender discrimination, it still happens.  Whether it’s being passed over for a promotion or getting paid less than a male co-worker in the same job, sad statistics tell us, or being demeaned in the office, it’s possible that women are being demeaned or facing discrimination in the workplace. While the aforementioned scenarios are some of the more common examples of gender discrimination, it’s important to know that this type of inequity is sometimes subtler.  Not only are covert examples of gender discrimination equally unacceptable, but they only signal even more inappropriate behavior in the future. That’s why it’s super important that you protect yourself. Here are five subtle examples of gender discrimination in the workplace you must be aware of. HR Rep Shares 7 Things Employees Should Never Do In The Workplace

HR Rep Shares 7 Things Employees Should Never Do In The Workplace

There are a lot of unspoken rules one should follow in the workplace, but not many employees may be aware of them. In fact, they may sometimes break these “rules,” costing them their position in the process. In this way, there are many actions that workers can take in order to be successful in the workplace. However, there are other actions that you should avoid completely. An HR worker shared 7 rules for what employees should avoid doing in the workplace Valerie Rodriguez, who calls herself a “multifaceted corporate girl” on her TikTok bio, offered advice to employees with key takeaways based on her experience working in HR for nearly 10 years. 1. Don’t get too personal with other employees Rodriguez claims that oversharing details about your personal life with your coworkers may pose a problem.  “Sharing too much does not do you any good at any point in your career,” she said. “Especially when you know that you’re trying to move up [and] you’re trying to establish yourself as a reputable person within the …

Trump campaign lawyers can’t quit workplace discrimination case

Trump campaign lawyers can’t quit workplace discrimination case

Republican presidential candidate and former U.S. President Donald Trump holds a campaign rally at Ted Hendricks Stadium in Hialeah, Florida, U.S. November 8, 2023.  Octavio Jones | Reuters A New York federal judge on Thursday rejected — for now, at least — a request by a law firm to withdraw from representing the presidential campaign of Donald Trump in a discrimination lawsuit by former 2016 campaign advisor Arlene “A.J.” Delgado. But Magistrate Judge Katharine Parker gave the law firm — LaRocca, Hornik, Greenberg, Kittredge, Carlin & McPartland — until Tuesday to submit to her “a more detailed explanation” of its argument that a “irreparable breakdown” of its relationship with the Trump campaign required the firm to withdraw from representing it in the case. Parker’s ruling came a day after she held a closed-door meeting with lawyers from the firm and with their clients to discuss the withdrawal request. “In this case, defense counsel’s declaration is insufficient to grant withdrawal at this time,” Parker wrote in her order Thursday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. “By …

What Swifties Have to Teach Us About Shutting Workplace Bullies Down

What Swifties Have to Teach Us About Shutting Workplace Bullies Down

Source: Haley Powers / Unsplash I paired my early morning reading ritual, which included the NYT’s article “Taylor Swift Has Given Fans a Lot. Is It Finally Too Much?” with a ho-hum disagreement and a flick to the next screen. Later that evening, I spotted the posting on Instagram, and my research brain activated, fascinated to see strategies community builders can use to push back on bullies and stop the cycle, magically transforming from bystanders to upstanders. Full disclosure: I am a Swiftie. Fuller disclosure: I’m 50, not 15. I am also a college professor and a workplace bullying researcher, and I serve on the executive board of the National Workplace Bullying Coalition. Workplace bullying is the intentional act of denigrating a person’s character through gossip, manipulation, sabotage, gaslighting, and ostracization in an effort to revoke her community belonging. Over the last five years, I have collected the stories of more than 200 survivors of workplace bullying across 35 states, 10 countries, and 36 industries, most of whom ultimately lost their jobs as a result …

Woman’s Co-Workers Turn On Her After She Gets Office Hunk Fired

Woman’s Co-Workers Turn On Her After She Gets Office Hunk Fired

A woman is seeking advice after encountering troubles with her colleagues at work. Until a few months ago, she loved her job and the people she worked with.  However, all of that changed after one male employee, who was dubbed the office “hunk,” began working for the company. Everyone seemed to be fond of him except for her.  The woman soon discovered that her intuition was right and the hunk was a dud. When she decided to take action, her colleagues ridiculed her.   The woman reported her new ‘hunk’ colleague to HR after she noticed illegal activity on his work desk.  The woman’s dilemma was shared on best-selling author Jane Green’s agony aunt column.  “Dear Jane, I’ve been working in the same job for about six years now, and until a few months ago, I was always very lucky to have been blessed with what I thought were great colleagues,” the woman wrote.  nesharm / Canva Pro RELATED: Manager Allows Colleague To Berate His Female Employees & They Blame Him For Not Defending Them — ‘I Messed …

How to Design a Volunteering Program in Your Workplace

How to Design a Volunteering Program in Your Workplace

More workplaces are bolstering their volunteer programs, especially as employee demands grow for socially responsible employers and engagement. Nearly three in five companies surveyed by the Association of Corporate Citizenship Professionals reported increased opportunities for group volunteering last year. With National Volunteer Week in the rearview mirror, coworkers buoyed by recent acts of kindness might be looking for ways to integrate service more regularly into their professional schedules. They stand to benefit themselves, too. Recent University of Oxford research suggests organized volunteering is one of the most effective workplace programs for improving workers’ well-being. But not all corporate volunteering is created equal. The following advice from experts and nonprofit leaders provides some best practices for anyone interested in building or strengthening an officewide culture of service. Dr. Eddy Hogg, a University of Kent lecturer who studies volunteering, recommends giving agency to employees in the design of their workplace volunteer program. People who volunteer on their own time likely have a much more personal connection to the cause, he said, whereas an employee group will have …
