Faulty CrowdStrike update causes major global IT outage, taking out banks, airlines and businesses globally

Businesses across the world are reporting IT outages, including Windows “blue screen of death” errors on their computers, in what has already become one of the most widespread IT disruptions in recent years. The outage — linked to a software update from popular cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike — has affected computers running Microsoft Windows at organizations across various sectors, including airlines, banks, retailers, brokerage houses, media companies and railway networks. The travel sector seems to be one of the hardest hit, based on online chatter. CrowdStrike’s chief executive, George Kurtz, confirmed in a post on X that a “defect” in a content update for Windows hosts had caused the outage, and Kurtz ruled out a cyberattack. He added that the firm was rolling out a fix and that Mac and Linux hosts were not affected. “CrowdStrike is actively working with customers impacted by a defect found in a single content update for Windows hosts. Mac and Linux hosts are not impacted,” Kurtz noted on X. “This is not a security incident or cyberattack. The issue has …

Businesses including banks, airlines, telecommunications companies, TV and radio broadcasters, and supermarkets have been taken offline after blue screen of death error screens were seen on Windows workstations across the globe. George Kurtz, the founder and chief executive of the cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, has said the company is “deeply sorry for impact that we’ve caused to customers.” Kurtz told NBC’s Today Show in the US that the problem was down to a bug in a single update. “We identified this very quickly and remediated the issue,” he said, adding that CrowdStrike was now “working with each and every customer to make sure that we can bring them back online”. I am in jail for breaking windows at JP Morgan, the biggest funder of fossil fuels. Here’s why I did it | Amy Pritchard

Every day I struggle to hold the insanity of our collective behaviour within me – in my psyche, my heart and my body. The harm we are causing to ourselves, to our fellow humans and all other beings, and our incredible, beautiful home, is horrific. Yet I know that what I think and feel is a healthy response to what’s going on. In April 2021, Frans Timmermans, the vice-president of the EU commission, said: “Today’s children will face a future of fighting wars for water and food.” We are already facing significant impacts on our harvests here. The prospect of wars over resources and conflict caused by and exacerbated by climatic conditions is an almost unbearable intergenerational injustice. The loss of biodiversity, meanwhile, will erode the foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, law and order, health and quality of life worldwide. If the government’s primary duty is to protect the people, then the form of democracy we have is failing. We took this action because the institutions and systems that we relied upon were …

How to send and receive iMessages on Windows

How to send and receive iMessages on Windows

Kerry Wan/ZDNET As an iPhone owner, I use Apple’s iMessage to send and receive texts on my phone. But if I’m in front of my PC, writing and answering texts is often easier using a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. For that reason, I turn to a couple of tools that help me work with Apple iMessages in Windows. Built into Windows, Microsoft’s Phone Link app lets you view your recent texts, create new messages, and respond to existing texts. Any texts you send and receive automatically sync between your PC and your iPhone, so you can pick up an ongoing conversation on either device. Also: How to link your Android phone to your Windows 11 PC Another app called Intel Unison will perform the same tricks and even let you add emojis and items pasted from the Windows clipboard. According to Intel, Unison works only on Evo-powered laptops running on 13th-generation or higher processors. Why Doesn’t Copilot Help You Fix Problems in Windows?

Why Doesn’t Copilot Help You Fix Problems in Windows?

Key Takeaways Copilot on Windows 11 is underwhelming, lacks depth beyond summarizing web results. Copilot can complete routine tasks but often fails with more complex requests. Microsoft plans to enhance Copilot’s capabilities with an NPU for better AI integration in Windows 11. Microsoft is banking heavily on Copilot to take Windows 11 to the next level. It integrated Copilot into Bing and then added it to Windows 11 with the 23H2 update. However, while Microsoft positions Copilot as an AI assistant that can make your life more productive, it doesn’t quite measure up to those claims yet. Despite being available on Windows, Copilot doesn’t do anything spectacular besides presenting web results in a summarized format. But why doesn’t it do more just yet, and will that change soon? Let’s discuss. Copilot Has Answers, But They Aren’t Helpful When you enter a query in Copilot, it fetches web results and summarizes them with references. Copilot also supports plugins that can produce more tailored responses. Still, results for Windows queries aren’t super helpful and often generic. The …

Asus Zenbook Duo (2024) Review: A Two-Screened Laptop That Nails It

Asus Zenbook Duo (2024) Review: A Two-Screened Laptop That Nails It

Conceptually, it’s very close to what Lenovo did last year with the Yoga Book 9i, complete with shorthand gestures that help you pull up a virtual keyboard or touchpad, expand the screen to fill both displays or “flick” content from one screen to the other. This is all fairly easy to get the hang of. For the most part, working with the Zenbook Duo is no different than working with two monitors on a standard PC. Many prior dual-screen laptops suffered on the performance front, and while the Duo didn’t set any records, it’s perfectly capable across a wide spectrum of benchmarks. Business apps load and run quickly, and graphical capabilities are acceptable despite the lack of a discrete graphics processor. Even AI-oriented performance was reasonably good (again, considering there’s no GPU to boost it). If there’s a downside, it’s battery life. I got just 6 hours and 48 minutes of YouTube run time with one screen active, and that fell to 5 hours and 13 minutes with both live. Neither score is all that …
