Black church leaders brought religion to politics in the ‘60s – but it was dramatically different from today’s white Christian nationalism

(The Conversation) — Fifty-eight years ago in the summer of 1966, a group of Black church leaders took out a full-page advertisement in The New York Times titled “Black Power.” Their densely worded statement called on national leaders, “white churchmen,” Black citizens and the mass media to correct the country’s racial power imbalance. In essence, they asked their fellow citizens to support Black power. Prominent church leaders such as Rev. Paul Washington of the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia, Rev. Gayraud Wilmore of the Presbyterian Commission on Religion and Race, and Rev. Benjamin Payton of the National Council of Churches were among the signatories. With years of civil rights experience, 48 Black church leaders boldly asserted their unequivocal support for the Black Power movement. Like many white Christian nationalists in 2024, these Black church leaders believed that God was punishing their beloved country. Both groups called for repentance and fundamental change. And like white Christian nationalists, the 1966 Black Christian activists asserted that their faith had something to say on matters of racial identity …

Alzheimer’s Could Be A White Matter Disease, Not Gray

Alzheimer’s Could Be A White Matter Disease, Not Gray

Authored by RJ Tesi via RealClearScience, Alzheimer’s disease (Alzheimer’s) is conceptualized as a progressive consequence of two hallmark pathological changes in gray matter, in particular, extracellular amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. However, over the past several years, neuroimaging studies have implicated micro and microstructural abnormalities in white matter in the risk and progression of Alzheimer’s, suggesting that in addition to the neuronal pathology characteristic of the disease, white matter degeneration and demyelination are crucial features of patients living with the disease. A shift to focus on white matter abnormalities, rather than gray matter, can open up critical new avenues in Alzheimer’s pathology and could be potential treatment targets.  White matter vs. gray matter  The brain’s gray matter is mainly composed of neuronal cell bodies. Nerve cells in the gray matter are where memories are stored. Networks of nerve cell bodies process information in the brain. These neuronal networks are necessary for thinking, speaking, and most activities. White matter is made up of myelinated axons.  White matter disease is the degeneration of tissue in the largest and …

Author of WHITE FRAGILITY Accused of Plagiarism

Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. Anti-Racism Author Accused of Plagiarizing Minority Academics Robin DiAngelo’s White Fragility flew to the top of bestseller lists in mid-2020 during the height of Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of George Floyd’s killing. Criticism came along with sales, and her follow-up book, largely went unnoticed. Now, according to a complaint filed by The University of Washington, DiAngelo’s doctoral dissertation copied passages from the work of multiple Asian-American academics. Having looked at the passages in the complaint, I am not sure how you defend this one. Neil Gaiman Accused of Sexual Assault by Fifth Woman When the news first broke of The Tortoise’s reporting on women coming forward about Neil Gaiman, I thought this was probably going to turn out to be much, much worse. This recent allegation, backed up by a phone recording of someone alleged to be Gaiman, is indeed worse. (A side note: The Bookseller did it’s due diligence and sought …

Poor Black Kids Are Doing Better. Poor White Kids Are Doing Worse.

Poor Black Kids Are Doing Better. Poor White Kids Are Doing Worse.

Produced by ElevenLabs and News Over Audio (NOA) using AI narration. The yawning gap between the mobility of white children and Black children growing up in low-income families has narrowed sharply, according to a major new study released today, based on tens of millions of anonymized census and tax records. Yet the findings are not entirely comforting. Inequality narrowed not just because poor Black kids have grown up to earn more as adults but also because poor white kids are earning less. Children born in lower-income white families did not fall behind just relative to the gains made by their higher-income white peers or their peers in Black families across the income spectrum. They fell behind in absolute terms. Poor white kids born in 1992 were earning $1,530 less at age 27 than poor white kids born in 1978, after accounting for inflation. Fewer were married, fewer had graduated from college, and more were incarcerated too. Poor Black kids born in 1992, on the other hand, were making $1,607 more than those born in ’78. …

Former White House staffer says Trump called for leaker to be executed | Donald Trump

Former White House communications director Alyssa Farah Griffin has disclosed that Donald Trump repeatedly mused out loud about executing people at several meetings while she worked for him during his presidency. Griffin’s claim, which she made in a podcast recording with Mediaite released on Friday, is likely to add to concerns that a return for Trump to the Oval Office could be characterized primarily by political retribution. The former communications director for the Trump administration told the outlet she had been at a meeting at which he “straight up said a staffer who leaked … should be executed”, referring to an anonymously sourced report that the former president had gone into a secure bunker at the White House at the height of the racial justice protests prompted by a Minneapolis police officer’s murder of George Floyd. “There were others where we talked about executing people,” Griffin said. In response to Griffin’s comments, Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung told Newsweek: “As President Trump has said, the best revenge is the success and prosperity of all Americans.” Under …

White House says ceasefire deal ‘possible’; Israel attacks Rafah

The White House said it viewed the cease-fire deal for the Gaza Strip as still possible Thursday, based on Hamas’s latest response to an American-backed plan, as Israel ramped up attacks around Rafah in southern Gaza. “We are working actively to generate a path forward based on what Hamas has come in with,” White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters at the Group of Seven summit in Italy, referring to Hamas’s latest response with an amended proposal. “It gets us to a result that’s consistent with what the U.N. Security Council laid down and consistent with [what] President Biden laid out; we believe that is possible.” At the same time, Sullivan urged Hamas to accept the U.S.-backed proposal that was “on the table.” Hamas “should take it and not try to push this thing in a direction where we just get to stalemate,” he said, calling on the international community to pressure Hamas to accept the deal on offer. President Biden told reporters at the G-7 summit that the leaders discussed the cease-fire …

Chappell Roan Reveals Why She Rejected An Offer To Perform At The White House

Pop star of the moment Chappell Roan has claimed that she recently rejected an invite to perform as part of the White House’s Pride celebrations. The Red Wine Supernova singer was one of the performers at New York City’s Governors Ball festival on Sunday (9 June), during which she emerged dressed as the Statue of Liberty in a spiked crown, covered head-to-toe in green paint. When it came to performing her song My Kink Is Karma, she took the opportunity to issue her reply to the invitation. “As a response to the White House who asked me to perform at Pride: we want liberty, justice and freedom for all,” she shared. “When you do that, that’s when I’ll come.” Elsewhere in her set, the Good Luck, Babe! singer recited a portion of the famous sonnet The New Colossus by poet and activist Emma Lazarus, which is engraved on the pedestal of the iconic New York City statue. Wheel Of Fortune: Vanna White bids an emotional goodbye to Pat Sajak

Ahead of Pat Sajak’s final episode as the host of Wheel Of Fortune, Vanna White paid an emotional tribute to her co-host of more than 40 years. On Thursday’s episode of the beloved game show, White honoured Sajak’s work and their friendship with a video segment that featured clips and photos tracing their collaboration from the 1980s to the present. “As this chapter of our lives is coming to an end, I know you’ll still be close by. You’re like a brother to me and I consider you a true lifelong friend who I will always adore,” she said. “I love you, Pat”. White said that while their long-running work collaboration has been significant to her – noting that he made her feel “so comfortable and so confident” when she started – she said their personal friendship has meant much more. “As much fun as we had on camera, those memories, milestones and life events we shared with our families, outside the studio, are my favourite,” she said, seeming to hold back tears. “We’ve watched …

Wealthy white men are UK’s biggest transport polluters, study finds | Transport

Wealthy white men from rural areas are the UK’s biggest emitters of climate-heating gases from transport, according to a study. Research by the Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) looked at transport emissions by income, gender, location, ethnicity and age. The study broke down the transport emissions into international and domestic flights, private road transport and public transport. Wealth The richest 0.1% in Britain emit 22 times more from transport than low earners, and 12 times more than average. The data finds that income is directly linked to levels of mobility, with people who earn more than £100,000 travelling on average at least double the distance each year compared with those on incomes under £30,000. Those in the most deprived 10% are responsible for by far the fewest emissions, though flying still makes up more than half of their total emissions. Graph showing how transport emissions steadily increase by every decile from most deprived to least deprived.
