In Victory Day speech, Putin accuses West of ‘distorting history’ – POLITICO

In Victory Day speech, Putin accuses West of ‘distorting history’ – POLITICO

[ad_1] “Today we see how they’re trying to distort the truth about WWII. It interferes with those who are used to building their essentially colonial policy based on hypocrisy and lies,” the freshly (re)inaugurated president told the assembled crowd, according to the Russian press. The Red Army was part of a much broader allied coalition including the U.S., the U.K., Poland, France, Canada and others. Soviet Victory Day, commemorated a day later than the day marked by the other allies, also signals the beginning of the USSR’s half-century occupation of most of Central and Eastern Europe, mass deportations to Siberia and forced collectivization of local economies. Although Russia was only a part of the USSR, today’s Russia has tried to monopolize the Soviet victory as its own, and Putin uses the memory of the war to buttress Russian nationalism. That extends to tarring opponents of his regime as “Nazis.” “Revanchism, abuse of history, and an attempt to justify the current Nazi followers is part of an overall policy of the Western elites to stoke new …

Sudan’s paramilitary RSF accused of ‘ethnic cleansing’ in West Darfur | Conflict News

Sudan’s paramilitary RSF accused of ‘ethnic cleansing’ in West Darfur | Conflict News

[ad_1] Human Rights Watch says ‘thousands’ killed in attacks last year targeting Masalit tribe and other non-Arab groups. Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias killed “at least thousands of people” in West Darfur state, an international rights group has said, in what it called apparent “crimes against humanity” and “genocide”. In a report published on Thursday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that RSF attacks on the Masalit tribe and other non-Arab groups between April and November 2023 were some of the worst atrocities in the ongoing civil war which started that April. The attacks in el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, saw entire neighbourhoods housing primarily displaced Masalit communities looted, burned, shelled and razed to the ground. The campaign that amounted to “ethnic cleansing” left hundreds of thousands of people as refugees, HRW said in its 186-page report. The violence, which included mass torture, rape and looting, peaked in mid-June – when thousands of people were killed within days – and surged again in November, it said. China’s Xi in Europe: ‘Charm offensive’ or bid to divide the West?

China’s Xi in Europe: ‘Charm offensive’ or bid to divide the West?

[ad_1] Fine brandy, a Tour de France jersey and old grudges against NATO: On his first European tour in five years, Chinese President Xi Jinping is engaging in a diplomatic dance that is seen by some as a concerted Chinese bid to stress-test the transatlantic alliance. With Washington watching warily from the sidelines, Xi’s whirlwind visit this week has taken him to France, Serbia and Hungary, with a very different tone and agenda at each stop, but with some overarching goals in common. Chinese President Xi Jinping enjoys a drink at a restaurant in the French Pyrenees on Wednesday. (Aurelien Morissard / Associated Press) Taken as a whole, the Chinese leader’s European trip is seen as both a charm offensive and a hard-nosed display of realpolitik on matters such as trade and the war in Ukraine — at the expense of a united Western front on both. During the visit, Xi has nodded to traditional European centers of power such as France and the European Union — but also laid heavy emphasis on deepening ties …

Gilgeous-Alexander Has 29 Points to Help Thunder Roll Past Mavericks in Game 1 of West Semifinals

[ad_1] OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was his usual self and Luka Doncic wasn’t. Gilgeous-Alexander had 29 points, nine rebounds and nine assists to help the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Dallas Mavericks 117-95 on Tuesday night in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series. Gilgeous-Alexander made 8 of 19 field goals and 11 of 13 free throws before coming out of the game with 3:26 remaining and the Thunder leading 111-89. Doncic, an MVP finalist like Gilgeous-Alexander, scored 19 points on 6-for-19 shooting and had five turnovers. He bristled when asked about his shooting. “Who cares,” he said. “We lost. We just got to move onto the next one. We’ve got to be better.” Lu Dort got most of the work guarding Doncic, with rookie Cason Wallace getting some of the action and 7-foot-1 center Holmgren pestering him near the rim. Photos You Should See – April 2024 Thunder coach Mark Daigneault said Dort, one of the league’s best perimeter defenders did his job. “He’s just a warrior,” Daigneault said. “Brings …

Isolated From West, Putin Projects Domestic Power at Inauguration

Isolated From West, Putin Projects Domestic Power at Inauguration

[ad_1] Vladimir V. Putin was inaugurated for a fifth term as president on Tuesday in a ceremony filled with pageantry and a televised church service, as the Russian leader tried once more to depict his invasion of Ukraine as a religiously righteous mission that is part of “our 1,000-year history.” Mr. Putin took the presidential oath — swearing to “respect and safeguard the rights and freedoms of man and citizen” — with his hand on a red-bound copy of Russia’s Constitution, the 1993 document that guarantees many of the democratic rights that he has spent much of his 25-year rule rolling back. Mr. Putin was re-elected in March in a rubber-stamp contest that Western nations dismissed as a sham. If he serves the full six years of his new term, he will become the longest-serving Russian leader since Empress Catherine the Great in the 18th century. “Together, we will be victorious!” Mr. Putin said at the end of a speech after he took the oath in the Kremlin’s gilded St. Andrew’s Hall. The ceremony was …

Sheridan Smith Opens Up About ‘Heartbreak’ Over Her Latest West End Show Closing Early

[ad_1] Sheridan Smith has spoken of her “heartbreak” about the early closure of her current show Opening Night, and shared her concerns she “let down” her colleagues. The two-time Olivier winner is currently starring in a new musical adaptation of the 1977 film Opening Night, about an actor gearing up for a new play while enduring personal and professional struggles. While the show itself was critically panned, and ticket sales have reportedly been low, Sheridan’s performance was more well-received in reviews for the show. However, it was eventually announced Opening Night would be closing two months earlier than planned, which its leading star has taken to heart. Sheridan Smith on stage in Opening Night Dave Benett via Getty Images In a new interview with The Times, Sheridan apparently began to cry while discussing the show’s closure, saying: “I was just heartbroken for the company. I felt that I’d let them down in a way, that I couldn’t sell it.” “This has been very cathartic for me,” she added of the show. “It’s been like therapy, …
