Are too many Americans on antidepressants? A psychiatrist of 35 years weighs in

Drugs for treating depression are among the most prescribed category of medications in the U.S. – 1 in 6 American adults take them. Some health researchers and advocates have raised concerns that too many patients are using antidepressants and that patients who want to stop taking them struggle to do so. One of the most prominent voices on this point is Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who launched an effort in May 2026 encouraging doctors to find other ways besides antidepressants and other psychiatric drugs to treat depression when possible. As a psychiatrist for over 35 years, including a past role as the medical director of North Dakota’s Department of Human Services, I’ve seen both the benefits and the problems with antidepressants. In my view, there are grains of truth to claims that they are overused, but the full picture is much more nuanced. What are antidepressants, and who takes them? Over half of all antidepressant medications prescribed are a type of drug called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. The …

US Weighs Removing Steering Wheel Requirement for Driverless Cars

US Weighs Removing Steering Wheel Requirement for Driverless Cars

If the head of the nation’s auto safety oversight has his way, self-driving cars won’t need brake pedals or steering wheels in the near future. In an interview on CNBC’s Squawk Box on Thursday, Jonathan Morrison, the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said he supports innovation in autonomous vehicles, including doing away with some features that are currently mandated. “If you’re developing a vehicle that is designed never to be driven by a human operator, does it make any sense to require manual control for the vehicle?” Morrison said. “I think the answer is pretty clear there.” Some self-driving cars, such as models intended for ridesharing fleets from companies like Uber and Tesla, are already steering in that direction, since they aren’t designed for human driving. Some, such as the cars used by Waymo, can be taken over by remote human drivers. Removing brake pedals and steering wheels, however, would mean that a human could not take over if an autonomous car stalls or a dangerous situation arises that requires intervention. Makers of …

Flat-Top or Grated Grill? A Pitmaster Weighs In

Flat-Top or Grated Grill? A Pitmaster Weighs In

Just when we all thought we had grilling figured out, flat-top grills burst on the scene and offered another buying decision for outdoor cooking. I grew up on grated grills, and they’re still the most widely used style in the US, whether powered by wood pellets, charcoal or gas, but this new flavor offers a slightly different take — and some real benefits — with regard to the time-honored summer tradition. At its core, “grill” means the direct application of high heat even if it has become synonymous with a slatted cooking surface. If you’ve struggled with the feeling that you’re supposed to use a grill during warm months but find yourself looking for excuses not to use it — either because it’s too hard to clean or because you can’t seem to get it right — a flat-top model might be the answer. The 9 Best Grills Out of 30 We Tested So, is a flat-top grill worth it? I consulted a seasoned grillmaster, Erica Blaire. The former attorney and licensed sommelier is also …

Mandy Moore weighs in on Ashley Tisdale’s mommy group essay

Mandy Moore weighs in on Ashley Tisdale’s mommy group essay

Mandy Moore shared her take on the drama swirling around her celebrity mommy group, months after fellow child actor Ashley Tisdale shaded the bunch in scathing essay last winter. The “This Is Us” star and mother of three, during a recent appearance on Andy Cohen’s Sirius XM show “Radio Andy,” said she found the former “Suite Life of Zack & Cody” star’s article “very upsetting” and that it shocked both herself and fellow mommy group member Hilary Duff. “We have both grown up in this business and had people dissect who we are and the choices we make and all of that,” Moore, 42, told the Bravo host, “but this was something altogether different and decidedly way more upsetting … because it just cuts to the core.” In December, New York magazine published “High School Musical” star Tisdale French’s essay for its “It’s Been a Year” series. The actor’s piece, titled “Breaking Up With My Toxic Mom Group,” accused other group members of snubbing Tisdale French from various gatherings and group chats. “‘This is too …

Pentagon Weighs Anti-Drone Laser Weapon Deployment In DC To Fortify Airspace

Pentagon Weighs Anti-Drone Laser Weapon Deployment In DC To Fortify Airspace

We outlined a glaring security gap in U.S. counter-drone defenses well before the U.S.-Iran conflict erupted one month ago. At the time, we specifically pointed out that data centers are largely unprepared for drone threats. We believe the Gulf conflict – after Iran bombed multiple data centers and military bases – has likely pushed the federal government into panic mode, accelerating efforts to deploy counter-drone systems around high-value targets across the homeland, whether military bases or civilian infrastructure. This brings us to a New York Times report from Tuesday morning outlining how the Department of War is considering deploying anti-drone laser weapons near Fort McNair in Washington, DC, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio reside, following recent reports of suspicious activity and ongoing concerns about drone attacks on the homeland. The report cited sources who “requested anonymity” and said the Army is discussing deploying laser weapons that would add an extra layer of security to some of the world’s most secure airspace across the Washington-Baltimore region. The Federal Aviation Administration …

Famed Plastic Surgeon Weighs in on Jim Carrey’s Face

Famed Plastic Surgeon Weighs in on Jim Carrey’s Face

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Is it a shock that an aging actor may or may not have gotten work done on their face? Apparently yes, based on how rumors and conspiracy theories swirled around Jim Carrey’s recent appearance at the César Awards in Paris, where he graced viewers with a noticeably plump and smooth visage. Explanations for Carrey’s face ranged from the outrageous to the even more outrageous. Drag queen and makeup artist Alexis Stone made a post on Instagram implying he impersonated Carrey at the awards ceremony and uploaded a picture of a prosthetic mask (which some speculated to be AI-generated). What should’ve been an obvious joke seemed to activate something conspiratorial in the brains of other celebrities like Katy Perry and Megan Fox, with Perry commenting a bullseye emoji, and Fox commenting that “I can’t handle any more stress right now I need to know if this is real.” If Stone actually did pull off such a stunt, he had …

Irving Azoff Weighs in on Billboard-YouTube Chart Dispute

Irving Azoff Weighs in on Billboard-YouTube Chart Dispute

Music industry titan Irving Azoff is weighing in on YouTube and Billboard‘s ongoing dispute over chart metrics, commending the music trade for keeping with its current policies while encouraging the rest of the music business to stand up to the video service and demand it pay music creators more. Azoff’s letter comes several months after YouTube had announced in December that it would be yanking its data from the Billboard charts, arguing the publication doesn’t put enough weight on free streams in its calculations for sales units. YouTube Music head Lyor Cohen argued that the weighting toward paid streams “doesn’t reflect how fans engage with music today and ignores the massive engagement from fans who don’t have a subscription.” “YouTube pays music creators — artists and songwriters — less than any other comparable digital service and should not have influence over the Billboard charts,” Azoff wrote in the letter shared on Friday. “When YouTube starts paying artists and songwriters on par with other music services, then its streams can be counted the same as Apple, …

Quintessentially Irish review – Pierce Brosnan weighs in on scattergun study of Irishness

Quintessentially Irish review – Pierce Brosnan weighs in on scattergun study of Irishness

It features a definition of “the craic” but, frustratingly, this long, meandering documentary about Irishness contains only very small quantities of actual fun. It’s a follow-up from film-maker Frank Mannion to his 2022 doc Quintessentially British, but feels like a commission from Aer Lingus: something to watch inflight from Boston to Dublin, soothingly bland, relaxingly dull. Though to be fair, Mannion gets a big laugh when he archly asks a business expert: “What is it that brings international business to Ireland. The weather?” The film is a series of interviews that contain, bizarrely, one or two with people in possession of very famous names but next to no connection to Ireland. Like Usain Bolt, who’s never set foot on Irish soil, but is fond of a pint of Guinness and had an Irish agent. We get a lot of Pierce Brosnan at home in sunny Malibu wearing a green blazer, telling stories that go off on random tangents. (One ends with his wife breastfeeding on a beach in Mexico next to Kate Moss and Naomi …
