Vintage Gucci, a £5 rug and a salt duck: your best secondhand finds

Vintage Gucci, a £5 rug and a salt duck: your best secondhand finds

We love secondhand shopping here on the Filter – whether it’s Second Hand September or not. You can unearth one-off, affordable pieces, and feel good about not adding overconsumption to your list of things to worry about. So to inspire us, we asked you for your best-ever preloved finds, whether that’s furniture or fashion or more (and added a few of our own, too). “An Ercol daybed I bought on eBay for £50, in need of some TLC,” reader Fiona told us. “Stripped, re-webbed and with a new cushion, it is now a thing of beauty and very comfortable.” “The best thing I ever bought secondhand is a mahogany dining table 30 years ago: I can’t remember how much I paid, but it was a fraction of the cost of a new one. It’s Edwardian and very solid. Soon after, we found four Victorian balloon-back chairs that nearly matched two we already had. The chairs were professionally re-covered so cost more than the table in the end. They’re all now heirlooms,” Anthea told us. Worth …

Does Your Graphic Tee Low-Key Suck?

Does Your Graphic Tee Low-Key Suck?

But irony isn’t for everyone. Most of the guys I spoke with came by their love of graphic T-shirts earnestly. Whether in an effort to emulate an older brother by repping his favorite heavy metal band or to signal solidarity with fellow skaters via Supreme tees. “Each community has its own symbols,” says Bijan Shahvali, owner of Intramural Shop in New York City. “When you see someone from your tribe, quote-unquote, wearing this very specific niche graphic, you understand them pretty quickly,” he says, referring to the Supreme shirts he wore and spotted on others growing up. “If I see you wearing a box logo shirt in 2006, I’m like, ‘This guy gets it.’ But if I see you wearing, I don’t know, something like Balenciaga, it just doesn’t mean anything.” He’s admittedly skeptical of irreverent designs, citing the cultural hollowness of 2010’s popular “Spiritual Gangster” shirts and referring to Abercrombie & Fitch’s brand of cheek—which, in the early aughts, included several racist slogans—as “the worst kind of graphic tee.” When scouring flea markets and …

He robbed a pensioner of his £35k vintage car and then offered him two choices

A man robbed an elderly man of his £35,000 vintage car before phoning him up and offering him two choices. Ben Owen, 35, was charged with robbery, taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent and possession of Class A and Class B drugs after the incident, which took place in Powys in November 2025. He pleaded guilty to all four charges and on Thursday was jailed for 16 months. Describing the impact of the attack, the victim said: “It would be a lie to say this incident has not shaken me up. This is a safe area, nothing like that happens here and it’s come as a total and utter surprise to myself and my neighbours. “I don’t feel safe in my own home anymore and have considering moving, but that would be running away from my problems.” Just before midnight on Tuesday, November 18, police received a 999-call from a 79-year-old man reporting that he’d been attacked by an unknown masked male outside his home in Rhayader, Powys at around 10.30pm that evening. Don’t …
