New survey points to correlation between Christian nationalism and authoritarian views

(RNS) — Americans who hold Christian nationalist views are also likely to express support for forms of authoritarianism, according to a new report, pointing to a possible link between those who advocate for a Christian nation and people who agree with statements such as the need to “smash the perversions eating away at our moral fiber and traditional beliefs.” The Public Religion Research Institute unveiled the new survey last week during Religion News Service’s 90th anniversary celebration in New York City, presenting the data to a room of faith leaders, advocates and reporters. A statement sent to RNS on Monday (Sept 16), Melissa Deckman, CEO of PRRI, framed the study as an effort to connect recent research on Christian nationalism with longstanding efforts to assess authoritarianism. “While most Americans do not espouse authoritarian views, our study demonstrates that such views are disproportionately held by Christian nationalists, who we know in our past research have been more prone to accept political violence and more likely to hold antidemocratic attitudes than other Americans,” Deckman said. In addition …

Nicole Eisenman’s Views on Palestine Caused Funding Issues for Survey

A Chicago retrospective for Nicole Eisenman, a celebrated artist who has spoken out in favor of a ceasefire in Gaza, faced funding issues because some collectors would not patronize the show due to her views on Palestine, according to a New York Times profile of the artist. The collectors were not named. Per that profile, the show was a “financial loss” for the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, the institution that mounted the US iteration of Eisenman’s retrospective, which first appeared at London’s Whitechapel Gallery last year. Related Articles The New York Times reported that the show was ultimately rescued by “other donors,” including Bob Rennie, who has appeared on the ARTnews Top 200 Collectors list. But MCA director Madeleine Grynsztejn told the Times that this pivot “did not in any way diminish the show,” whose checklist is largely the same as the versions that appeared at London and Oslo’s Astrup Fearnley Museet. Eisenman also said in the profile that their position on the war in Gaza had adversely impacted themself and other artists on …

United Learning’s pension plan: Lawyers give their views

More from this theme Recent articles New education secretary Bridget Phillipson has been pulled into a row over plans by the country’s biggest academy trust to offer teachers a less generous pension for more pay. United Learning’s plan presents a tricky political situation for Labour – pitting its loyalty to unions and their concerns over pay and conditions against the academy freedoms introduced by the previous government. The proposal has also thrown up several questions – including over its legality, what powers government may have to intervene and whether it could cause the Teachers’ Pension Scheme to effectively collapse. Schools Week put these questions to several pension legal experts – here’s what they said… You can read the ins and outs of United Learning’s plan to offer its teachers an alternative pension here, alongside the criticism from unions here. Question: It is legal for state schools to offer alternative pensions? Answer in short: Yes, but it’s complicated All schools are required to ensure teaching staff “have access to” the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS), said Polly …

NSS warns against allowing the promotion of religious views in RSHE

The National Secular Society has warned new guidance on Relationships, Sex, and Health Education (RSHE) will continue to enable the spread of stigmatising religious ideas about LGBT people, women, and reproductive health. Responding to a government consultation on the draft guidance, the NSS said the requirement that “pupils should understand the importance of equality and respect” is incompatible with permitting schools with a religious character to “teach their distinctive faith perspective on relationships”. NSS research from 2018 found many faith schools explicitly teaching that same-sex relationships are wrong and criticising sex outside of marriage. Some were also found condemning contraceptives and abortion, encouraging taboos around menstruation, and stigmatising same-sex relationships by teaching about them primarily through education about HIV/AIDs. The NSS said that respect and understanding “cannot be fostered” for children who are themselves LGBT or who have LGBT parents whilst religious perspectives can be promoted as part of RSHE. It called for allowances for faith schools to do so to be removed from the guidance. The NSS said the guidance around LGBT inclusion had …

‘Town’s getting multicultural and that’s good’: How Swindon views changes in its workforce | UK News

The arrival of the Victorian railway turned Swindon into one of the fastest-growing industrial towns in the UK. Workers flocked to the thriving Wiltshire hub from all over Britain. In more recent times, Swindon has been attracting people from further afield – so many, in fact, that one in five of the town’s population was born abroad. In 2011, 26,911 people in Swindon were born outside the UK. By 2021, that figure had risen to 47,656. The British-born population, by comparison, had risen from 182,215 to 185,754. On Manchester Road there are a host of shops, with signs boasting goods from all over Eastern Europe and South Asia. There are dozens of small businesses with diverse heritage. Asher Graham, who owns a barber shop on the street and has lived in Swindon all his life, says he has seen a change over the last few years: “The town’s getting multicultural and that’s good. “That’s what we need and like – everyone’s just getting to work.” Mr Graham employs two foreign-born barbers – one, Gaja Sherlekar, …

Israeli views of Gaza war split, Pew Research finds

Israeli views of Gaza war split, Pew Research finds

A majority of Israelis support their country’s military response to Hamas in Gaza but are divided over its scope, according to a survey by Pew Research published Thursday. The survey found 39 percent of Israelis said that the country’s military response against Hamas in Gaza has been “about right,” and 34 percent said it has “not gone far enough” — indicating continued support for the war. Another 19 percent said they think it has gone too far. The survey was conducted between March 3 and April 4, mostly before Israeli airstrikes killed seven aid workers for the charity group World Central Kitchen and predating this week’s airstrike in Rafah that killed at least 45 Palestinians. More than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the war started, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. The Oct. 7 attack on Israel by Hamas killed about 1,200. On Sunday, in one of the most horrifying scenes of the war, an Israeli strike in southern Gaza’s Rafah killed at least …

Reach page views down by a third after Facebook/Google changes

Reach chief executive Jim Mullen. Picture: Reach Page views across the websites of the UK’s biggest commercial publisher Reach were down by a third in the first quarter of 2024. The publisher attributed this decline of 33% to the “deprioritisation of news during 2023 by major platforms” in its latest quarterly update. Both Facebook and Google have made major changes to their algorithms affecting news referral traffic in the past year. However Reach said the impact of this was “partially offset” by a strengthened yield per page and added that the year-on-year drop in referral traffic will be less consequential as the year goes on. Reach owns newsbrands including the Mirror, Express, Star, Manchester Evening News, Liverpool Echo, Birmingham Live and many more. Overall in the three months to 31 March, Reach said revenue was down by 6.7% compared to the same period in 2023. Thanks for subscribing. Close Digital revenue was down 8.5% while print was down by 6% – print advertising declined by 10.7% but circulation revenue by a smaller 3.4%. Content from …

Victim characteristics sway moral views on sexual assault of sex robots

Victim characteristics sway moral views on sexual assault of sex robots

According to new research, people’s moral judgments about sexual assault on AI-powered sex robots are influenced by the robot victims’ mental capacities, interpersonal functions, ontological types, and the nature of their transactional relationships with humans. This work was published in Cognition. Sexual assault is universally condemned, yet not all incidents are viewed equally. Research has shown that attributes of perpetrators and victims moderate moral judgments in these contexts. Characteristics like race, gender, career success, and even the framing of perpetrators as victims can influence public sympathy and moral evaluation of sexual assault incidents. In this work, Anastasiia D. Grigoreva and colleagues examined whether victim attributes, specifically perceived mental capacities and interpersonal functions, similarly affect moral evaluations of sexual assault. In Study 1, a total of 790 participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions, each presenting sex robots with different levels of human-like mental capacities: agency, experience, or mechanism. The participants were tasked with reading scenarios describing interactions between humans and sex robots that demonstrated these capacities. Following the scenarios, participants responded to measures …
