Victor Hanson: What Is It With The Fickle Europeans?

Via The Daily Signal, This is a lightly edited transcript of a segment of “Victor Davis Hanson: In His Own Words” podcast from Daily Signal. What is it with the fickle Europeans? I know that they have different interests than ours, but we’re both Western entities. You’d think that we’d be more collaborative on the effort to disarm and denuclearize Iran. But a lot of strange things are happening. The traditional use of the Diego Garcia critical airbase in the Indian Ocean, run by the British, but often leased to us and allowed us to have a very valuable base for our long-range bombers. The British initially refused to allow us to use it. And then, only under conditions that it would be used for defensive purposes. I don’t know what that means. But I think they forgot the 1982 Falklands War. They were in big trouble going all the way across the world to attack a country in the Western Hemisphere. We were trying to be on friendly relationships so that [Argentina] wouldn’t join the other …

Victor Hugo’s lesser-known genius: Decoration

Victor Hugo’s lesser-known genius: Decoration

The memory remained etched in her mind. At the age of seven, Marie Hugo took the boat with her parents from Weymouth, England, to discover the house of her illustrious ancestor, her great-great-grandfather, on the Anglo-Norman island of Guernsey, a strip of land battered by the ocean off the French coast. Victor Hugo lived there in exile from 1855 to 1870, and his home, now transformed into a museum, became part of the family’s heritage. At the time, Marie was struck by the two oak trees framing the double doors and by the French flag waving in the wind. About 50 years later, after becoming a visual artist, she devoted a book to the house, titled Hauteville House, Victor Hugo décorateur (“Hauteville House, Victor Hugo the Decorator,” 2016, untranslated), in collaboration with her brother Jean-Baptiste Hugo, a photographer, and her daughter Laura Hugo, an editor. The book unveils the author’s lesser-known talent for interior design. This is also the central theme of the exhibition, running until April 26 at his former residence on Place des …

Victor Wembanyama and the Freak-Athlete Conundrum

Victor Wembanyama and the Freak-Athlete Conundrum

In middle age, some sports fans become reactionaries. Due to dwindling neuroplasticity, or some general souring toward the world, they can no longer appreciate how a game evolves. It’s similar to when a music fan stops checking for new artists and plays only albums that they loved in high school. As an aging NBA fan, I’m trying to stay vigilant. I never want to catch myself ranting endlessly at the bar about the inferiority of younger stars. When I watch them on the court, I look for fresh expressions of basketball beauty. And yet, despite my best efforts, I’m having a hard time getting into Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama, the league’s most promising young player, is only 21 years old and he’s French, but I don’t hold either of these things against him. Nor do I resent him for playing for San Antonio, a rival of my beloved Lakers. In fact, his fiery desire to improve reminds me of a young Kobe Bryant. I enjoyed his off-season jaunt to China, especially the 10 days that he …

Napoli had ‘no intention of mockery’ in Victor Osimhen TikTok video

Napoli said on Thursday they never intended to offend their striker Victor Osimhen with mocking social media videos, but the Serie A champions stopped short of apologising to the Nigeria international. The Italian side posted a video on TikTok with a high pitched voice showing Osimhen missing a penalty in their 0-0 draw against Bologna on Sunday, which was later deleted. Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda later threatened legal action, while the 24-year-old player removed all images of himself in a Napoli shirt from his social media accounts. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Football Daily Kick off your evenings with the Guardian’s take on the world of football “,”newsletterId”:”the-fiver”,”successDescription”:”Kick off your evenings with the Guardian’s take on the world of football”}” clientOnly config=”{“renderingTarget”:”Web”}”>Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
