The FBI has arrested one of its ‘most wanted’ fugitives — and sent a stark message to criminals on the run. Officials in the US issued a statement that said FBI agents captured Anibal Alexander Canelon Aguirre. Images showed the man in custody on an airfield, surrounded by FBI personnel. The FBI made the announcement shortly before midnight on Saturday in the UK. They posted on X at 11:21pm: “Anibal Alexander Canelon Aguirre is the 10th Ten Most Wanted fugitive captured by this FBI since January 2025. He is the first ever Cyber fugitive on FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list. In a statement, Trump said he may also consider removing Colombia – with whom Venezuela shares a long, open border – as well as Bolivia, if these countries can demonstrate progress following recent changes of government. Following the U.S. capture and arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on charges of narco-terrorism in January, cooperation with the country’s interim government is paying dividends, Trump said in the presidential determination published by the State Department. At least seven children have been hurt after a fairground attraction collapsed in Venezuela as bystanders rushed to assist. The incident occurred in the town of El Callao, in Bolívar state, when the ride known as “the flying chairs” gave way at a local amusement park at approximately 10.20pm on Saturday. Footage shows crowds of people desperately attempting to lift the wreckage of the collapsed attraction, with children seen lying on the ground beneath it. Authorities confirmed that seven children sustained cuts and bruises, though the full extent of their injuries is not yet known. Emergency services raced to the scene to treat those affected and transport them to nearby medical facilities, including the Juan Germán Roscio Hospital, where they remain under observation, according to El Nacional. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the collapse, with early reports suggesting that an axle on the main frame failed, causing the seating structure to detach and plummet to the ground. By the time he retired from the Marine Corps, in 1931, Major General Smedley Butler had served in Mexico, Haiti, Cuba, the Philippines, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, and China. It was the golden age of American imperialism, and Butler was one of its golden boys, among the most decorated fighters in U.S. history. But over time, Butler began to have doubts about what he was doing. “I spent 33 years and 4 months in active service,” he wrote in 1935. “During that period I spent most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer; a gangster for capitalism.” The costs of these excursions, he wrote, were paid in taxpayer money and soldiers’ lives. On June 24 two powerful earthquakes rocked Venezuela within seconds of each other. While approximately 120 people died in the capital, Caracas, the worst damage occurred just north. In the state of La Guaira, along a strip of popular Caribbean beaches, one apartment tower after another collapsed. Thousands of people died. I’ve made the thirty-minute drive from Caracas to La Guaira many times with friends for trips to the beach. But what I saw when I got there eight days after the earthquakes recalled photos of bombed-out cities. Whole stretches of buildings—both luxury condominiums and government-built apartment blocks—had been flattened, reduced to shards. Here a building fell into a tangle of twisted steel and buckled concrete, the thick floor slabs smashed tightly together. Nearby another one remained precariously standing, but with an outer wall stripped away, exposing a closet of clothes still on their hangers, a children’s bunk bed, a family room painted orange, with the English word HOME stenciled on the wall, the “O” in the shape of a house. Venezuela wants its gold back. And now with Maduro having been removed and Caracas being essentially a puppet of Washington influence and interests, it has a much better chance at this than ever before. Venezuela’s government and opposition are teaming up to wrest back $4 billion in gold bullion currently locked in the Bank of England’s vaults, according to a Friday report by the Financial Times. A freshly issued joint statement confirmed they are actively working “to recover Venezuela’s international reserve assets held in the Bank of England.” If successfully repatriated, the funds are slated in part for post-earthquake reconstruction efforts and to soften the blow of years of US sanctions, which still haven’t actually been fully lifted. The funds have been the subject of a lengthy court battle, after since 2018 the United Kingdom has blocked access by denying recognition to Venezuela’s revolutionary socialist government. Venezuela and Israel have agreed to restore consular relations, in a major historic shift, following the US orchestrated overthrow of longtime leader Nicolas Maduro back in January. Interim President Delcy Rodriguez, who was Maduro’s VP, is at the head of a state system that is still fundamentally the same – which can be summed up as Chavismo Socialism – except the government now serves to do Washington’s bidding from opening up oil access to foreign policy realignment.  This external realignment has been seen most on the world stage on issues where Caracas was once among the most outspoken Global South countries condemning ‘Western hegemony’.
