LMI International Analyzes Another Painting to Backup Van Gogh Claims

LMI International Analyzes Another Painting to Backup Van Gogh Claims

New York-based art research firm LMI International has come out fighting following backlash it faced last month after claiming a painting titled Elimar bought at a Minnesota garage sale for $50 was a long-lost work by Vincent van Gogh. After spending $30,000 on high-tech analysis, the company dated it to 1889 and said it’s worth $15 million. However, several van Gogh specialists have argued that the work was painted by a little-known 20th-century Danish artist called Henning Elimar, who died in 1989. They include Wouter van der Veen, a scholar specializing in the Dutch Post-Impressionist art who previously worked for Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum. He said the text “Elimar” in the bottom right-hand corner of Elimar is not its title (as LMI believes) but the artist’s signature. But LMI has now doubled down, by buying and analyzing what it claims is one of only two surviving works by the late Danish artist, titled Bridge and Stream, in a bid to prove he did not also paint Elimar. “Throughout the years-long research process of studying the …

The Amount of Dries Van Noten on Sale Today Is Kind of Insulting

The Amount of Dries Van Noten on Sale Today Is Kind of Insulting

Rarely would we dub a sale insulting, which is an admittedly odd way to describe a sale of any kind. But the amount of Dries Van Noten on sale at SSENSE right now, is, well, kind of insulting? Not to anyone specific, exactly, but there are very few acceptable excuses for the beloved designer’s swan-song collection to be this available at these prices—60% off, in a staggering number of cases. We’re talking god-tier tailoring, elite-level outerwear, and plenty of DVN’s genre-defining prints, all available at insanely low prices. For those unfamiliar, Dries Van Noten—venerated Belgian designer, original member of the now-legendary Antwerp Six—has been making some of the world’s most beautiful menswear for four decades straight. During that run, Van Noten never displayed a hint of stagnation or slippage, improbably remaining fully independent until 2018, even as the industry became increasingly conglomerated around him. So when he announced his retirement last year, the news was met with a unanimous jolt of sadness—and the feeling that the clock to enjoy the fruits of his labor was …

Van Gogh Museum Won’t Attribute $50 Garage Sale Painting

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Source: Wikimedia Commons.   A seemingly obscure portrait of a fisherman, titled Elimar, grabbed headlines earlier this week. That’s because a team of experts, citing “data-driven” research, believes the portrait—which an antiques collector bought at a Minnesota garage sale for just $50—was painted by Vincent van Gogh. However, Amsterdam’s Van Gogh Museum has joined the conversation, saying Elimar was not, in fact, painted by the iconic Post-Impressionist.   Elimar Is “Not An Authentic Painting,” Says Van Gogh Museum A team of experts says Elimar was painted by Vincent van Gogh. Source: LMI Group International, Inc.   New scientific methods of art authentication have grown increasingly popular amongst start-up tech companies—but not so much on the market. And, when it comes to authenticating the work of Vincent van Gogh, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is considered the principal authority on the matter. On Friday, January 31, the Van Gogh Museum announced that they had “considered the new information mentioned in the LMI Group’s Elimar report,” which details years of …

Van Gogh Museum Denies Attribution for Long-Lost Portrait

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam said on Friday that a long-lost portrait was, in fact, not by Vincent van Gogh, contradicting a 458-page report by the New York–based firm LMI Group International that claimed it was by the famed painter. The painting in question, titled Elimar (1889), depicts a fisherman with a round hat on his head and a pipe in his mouth. The fisherman appears transfixed as he repairs his net near a shore. The word “Elimar,” presumed to be the man’s name, is scrawled in the lower righthand corner. LMI Group said that the portrait would have been created while van Gogh was at the Saint-Paul psychiatric sanitarium in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France. Van Gogh had checked himself into the sanitarium; he remained there from May 1889 and May 1890. Related Articles To assess the painting, LMI Group assembled a team of roughly 20 experts from a variety of fields, including chemists, curators, and patent lawyers. In 2019, the firm paid an undisclosed sum for the work, purchasing it from an anonymous antiques collector who found it …

Rivian (RIVN) outpaced Ford for America’s best-selling electric van

Rivian (RIVN) outpaced Ford for America’s best-selling electric van

Rivian (RIVN) had the best-selling electric van in the US last year, topping Ford for the title. The electric delivery van (EDV) is rolling out across the US through its partnership with Amazon, but Rivian is expanding with new customers. Rivian EDV was the best-selling electric van in the US With over 51,500 electric vehicles delivered in 2024, Rivian beat expectations. Although it was only slightly higher than the 50,122 delivered in 2023, things picked up in the second half of the year. Rivian shut down its manufacturing plant in Normal, IL, last April to introduce new upgrades designed to cut costs and increase efficiency. To make matters worse, Rivian had to temporarily pause electric van production last summer due to a part shortage. After releasing fourth quarter and full-year 2024 delivery and production figures in early January, Rivian said, “The previously discussed shortage of a shared component on the R1 and RCV platforms is no longer a constraint.” New Kelley Blue Book estimates show that Rivian outpaced Ford with America’s best-selling electric van in 2024. Q4 …

Watch: Amazon Uses Huge Diesel Generator To Charge Electric Delivery Van Fleet

Amazon closed out 2024 with more than 20,000 electric delivery vans manufactured by Rivian in its fleet nationwide. The e-commerce giant highlights on its website that the electric vans are part of its “urgent” climate change initiative to “remove carbon emissions from transportation systems.”  However, Amazon faces mounting criticism for gaslighting the public about its net zero goals and actual operational fleet practices.  Take, for instance, Amazon’s website. Within the Sustainability section, the company laid out its approach to fight so-called global warming:  “To reach this target, we’re also expanding the use of zero-emission transportation such as electric delivery vans, cargo e-bikes, and on-foot deliveries, and we engage in industry initiatives to remove carbon emissions from transportation systems like ocean shipping, aviation, and trucking. We’re also using innovative construction techniques and building materials to make our fulfillment centers, data centers, offices, and physical retail locations more sustainable.”  Amazon’s climate pledge on its website.  While the company promotes its electric delivery vans as part of its effort to save the planet from a fiery demise—an end-of-world scenario Al Gore has inaccurately predicted …

Binge-Watch Classic Television Programs Free: The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Lone Ranger, Dragnet, That Girl & More

Earlier this week, we featured the 99-year-old Dick Van Dyke’s performance in Coldplay’s new music video, full of visual references to the sitcom that made him a household name in the early nineteen-sixties. And a household name he remains these six decades later, though one does wonder how many of those who appreciate his extreme longevity — both cultural and biological — have ever seen an episode of The Dick Van Dyke Show. I myself only caught the occasional late-night rerun in childhood, but however much he indulged his characteristic goofiness, the thirty-something Van Dyke in the role of comedy writer Rob Petrie always struck me as the very image of mature adulthood. Whether or not you saw it in the first place, you can now watch The Dick Van Dyke Show’s five seasons free on Youtube, starting with the first here.
