The Valentine’s Day dining icks that guarantee no second date

The Valentine’s Day dining icks that guarantee no second date

I once sat opposite a man who ordered his steak well done. That was probably the first red flag, though I’ve been told to be less of a snob. If you like chewy, tasteless beef, you do you, babe. He then looked down at his plate for a beat too long, leaned forward and dribbled on the steak before cutting into it. A long, stringy glob of drool – the kind infants do accidentally. Except this was not an accident. I was so horrified I didn’t say anything. Nor did he, which made it worse. We sat there in silence, him eating, me trying not to gag. I didn’t touch much of my own food, partly out of shock and partly because I couldn’t unsee it. Years later, he’s now coming to my wedding – to a man who understands that saliva is not a condiment, I might add. Growth is possible. Everyone’s got a dating horror story. Everyone’s got an ick. You dump them, you marry someone else and you tell the story at …

Want a reasonably priced diamond ring this Valentine’s? Head to Dave & Busters

Dave & Buster’s is putting a whole new spin on “sweeping someone off their feet” this Valentine’s Day by hiding five diamond engagement rings worth $15,000 each inside its popular Human Crane games at select locations across the country. The promotion runs only on February 14, when five 3-carat diamond rings designed by Platinum Days will be placed in the Human Crane prize pit at Dave & Buster’s locations in Times Square, West Nyack, New York, and in Hollywood, Carlsbad, and Folsom, California. The Human Crane is a life-sized arcade experience where players strap into a harness and are lowered into a pit filled with oversized prizes, attempting to grab items just like a traditional claw machine. The attraction typically costs around $20 per play. According to the company, winners will not receive the engagement rings immediately but will instead redeem them later after providing contact information. Other prizes in the Human Crane typically include oversized plush toys and inflatables, including rubber balls, aliens, and giant bananas. “Dave & Buster’s has always been about bringing …

Psychology shows why using AI for Valentine’s Day could be disastrous

Psychology shows why using AI for Valentine’s Day could be disastrous

As Valentine’s Day approaches, finding the perfect words to express your feelings for that special someone can seem like a daunting task – so much so that you may feel tempted to ask ChatGPT for an assist. After all, within seconds it can dash off a well-written, romantic message. Even a short, personalized limerick or poem is no sweat. But before you copy and paste that AI-generated love note, you might want to consider how it could make you feel about yourself. We research the intersection of consumer behavior and technology, and we’ve been studying how people feel after using generative AI to write heartfelt messages. It turns out that there’s a psychological cost to using the technology as your personal ghostwriter. The rise of the AI ghostwriter Generative AI has transformed how many people communicate. From drafting work emails to composing social media posts, these tools have become everyday writing assistants. So it’s no wonder some people are turning to them for more personal matters, too. Wedding vows, birthday wishes, thank you notes and …

Have We Fallen Out of Love With Valentine’s Day?

Have We Fallen Out of Love With Valentine’s Day?

My daughter came home from school the other day, talking about having to go get Valentine’s Day cards. Ugh, oh yeah… that time of year again. I’ll need to get my wife a card as well, I suppose. I know how that “I suppose” might sound, but it’s not what you think: My wife actually thinks they’re a waste of money. The cards are more for the kids than anyone. I’m quite lucky in the sense that my wife sees no value in Valentine’s Day. Her practical mind says if you want to put money into something, put it into the fund for a new kitchen or patio—not cards or surprise gifts that she probably won’t like anyway. (My wife is quite particular and would much rather get her own things herself.) On a more philosophical note, my wife would say that sharing “love” on Valentine’s Day shouldn’t be about buying things, but rather showing love in our actions and efforts (i.e., consistent with a previous Valentine’s piece I wrote). I will get my wife …
