British YouTubers Josh & Archie got a big laugh at Tucker Carlson’s expense after forging Kensington Palace employment documents that landed one of them an interview, pretending to be the person responsible for doctoring the photo of Kate Middleton and her children that created a major stir this week. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) the pranksters break down how they made up a story about being released by the Prince and Princess of Wales for “not doing a good enough job” editing the photo, which was believable enough to fool production staff at the Tucker Carlson Network (TCN). On February 26, Simon Ateba, owner of the Today News Africa website, reported on X that Russia prevented a Ukrainian assassination attempt on American journalist Tucker Carlson while he was in Moscow to interview President Vladimir Putin. Ukraine’s intelligence agency dismissed the news as a “Russian ploy.” Andrey Yusov of Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate told VOA’s Ukrainian Service: “This is an absolute delusion and a ploy of the Russian fascist regime.” Ateba neither cited sources nor provided details to verify the information but illustrated his post with an image of Putin and Carlson taken during their interview. At the time of this writing, Ateba’s post had received more than 14 million views and about 85,000 interactions. Tucker Carlson, the conservative former cable TV news pundit, recently traveled to Moscow to interview Russian dictator Vladimir Putin for his Tucker Carlson Network, known as TCN. The two-hour interview itself proved dull. Even Putin found Carlson’s soft questioning “disappointing.” Very little from the interview was newsworthy. Other videos Carlson produced while in Russia, however, seemed to spark far more significant commentary. Carlson marveled at the beauty of the Moscow subway and seemed awed by the cheap prices in a Russian supermarket. He found the faux McDonald’s – rebranded “Tasty-period” – cheeseburgers delicious. As a scholar of broadcast propaganda, I believe Carlson’s work provides an opportunity for public education in distinguishing between propaganda and journalism. Some Americans, primarily Carlson’s fans, will view the videos as accurate reportage. Others, primarily Carlson’s detractors, will reject them as mendacious propaganda. But closely considering these categories, and evaluating Carlson’s work in context, might deepen public understanding of the distinction between journalism and propaganda in the American context.
