Inside the new season of Trigger Point

Add Trigger Point to your watchlist How do you keep things fresh in a fourth series of ticking clocks, burning fuses and dastardly bomb plots? It’s a good question – and Vicky McClure, star of the hit ITV drama Trigger Point, has the answer. “We’ve become a bit like Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” she tells RT, referencing the 1987 Steve Martin and John Candy comedy classic. “We’ve got almost every mode of transport this time – apart from trains – including a scene with a speedboat. We went up and down the Thames for half a day. We’d been looking forward to it for a month beforehand. ‘For Want of a Horse” review: A trigger warning for zoophilia

‘For Want of a Horse” review: A trigger warning for zoophilia

“For Want of a Horse,” a play by Olivia Dufault receiving its world premiere in an Echo Theater Company production at Atwater Village Theatre, wants to have a rational conversation about a taboo topic that can provoke instant outrage. The subject is zoophilia, not to be confused with bestiality, though for many of us it will be a distinction without much of a difference. Calvin (Joey Stromberg), a good-looking, mild-mannered married accountant, has harbored a secret for much of his life. He has a thing for horses. His erotic interest began at an early age, and all his efforts to lead a normal life have left him depressed and contemplating suicide. His wife, Bonnie (Jenny Soo), is a permissive kindergarten teacher who’s having difficulty restraining a girl in her class who has discovered the joys of masturbation. Worried about her husband, she discovers through his browsing history that he’s once again visiting strange animal sites. She suggests he keep a horse, explaining that she doesn’t want to end up a widow or divorcée. Calvin is …

Cystitis or tooth decay could trigger dementia just a few years later

Severe cystitis, pneumonia or tooth decay could increase the risk of dementia. A study of hundreds of thousands of people across Finland has found that people who were treated in hospital for these infections were significantly more likely to develop dementia – including an early-onset form of the condition – within the next six years. We increasingly think that dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, could be prevented or delayed through brain-training games, steadfast lifestyle changes and even saunas. Now, the latest research adds to the mounting evidence supporting infection avoidance to further reduce the odds of developing the condition. “It suggests that dementia risk may be partially modifiable,” says Kuan-Ching Wu at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, who wasn’t involved in the study. In 2021, Pyry Sipilä at the University of Helsinki and his colleagues noticed that people who were hospitalised with severe infections were more likely to develop dementia. But it was unclear whether this was because they had other conditions like diabetes, which increases both the risk of dementia and infection susceptibility. To untangle …
