The world is on track for between 1.9 and 3.7°C of warming by 2100

Coal power plants contribute to global warming Walaiporn Sangkeaw Current policies of governments around the world are likely to result in Earth warming by anywhere between 1.9 and 3.7°C by 2100, with potentially more to come in the 22nd century. “Every year we keep emitting CO2 after 2100 results in higher and higher global temperatures,” says Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Stripe, a California-based software company that invests in carbon-removal technology. His conclusions are based on a review of more than a dozen studies published in the past five years looking at the implications of current policies. According to these studies, the world is most likely to warm by between 2.3 and 3°C by 2100. However, these numbers don’t fully take account of the uncertainties about future emissions of greenhouse gases as a result of human actions, and also in how the climate system will respond to those emissions. Including those uncertainties gives a broader range, of 1.9 to 3.7°C. These numbers reflect the most likely range of scenarios – the 5th to 95th …

Will Trump Keep the Cease-Fire on Track?

Will Trump Keep the Cease-Fire on Track?

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here. For weeks, Donald Trump has been exerting influence on events in the Middle East. After winning the 2024 election, he dispatched his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, to the region to help the Biden administration get the Israel-Hamas cease-fire and hostage-release deal over the finish line. Now, a little more than 24 hours into his presidency, Trump has already begun to undo much of President Joe Biden’s decision making from the past four years, including on foreign affairs. I spoke with my colleague Yair Rosenberg, who covers both Trump and the Middle East, about the new president’s goals and approach to the region. Isabel Fattal: What moves has Trump made on the Israeli-Palestinian front since taking office yesterday? Yair Rosenberg: Shortly after inauguration, Trump rescinded Joe Biden’s February executive order that erected an entire sanctions regime against extremist Israeli …

Glowing biological quantum sensor could track how cells form

Glowing biological quantum sensor could track how cells form

A fluorescent protein based on one made by the bioluminescent crystal jelly can be used as a quantum sensor Alex Archontakis/Alamy Quantum sensors made from a glowing protein can be produced by living cells and could be used to much more accurately measure tiny changes in the body. This could one day help with early disease detection or tracking how cells form. Sensors based on the quantum mechanical property of spin can measure temperature, magnetic fields and other phenomena much more sensitively than conventional devices. They have already been shown to work in living animals, such as detecting the magnetic… Source link

2,000 hp electric Ford Supervan drifts on Top Gear test track

The Top Gear TV show might be over, but its tamed racing driver – a masked, anonymous hot shoe known only as “the Stig” – lives on … and his latest adventure involves pitching the 1,400 hp electric Ford SuperVan demonstration vehicle around the famed Top Gear test track. Sideways. Whether we’re talking about record lap times at hallowed motorsports grounds like Bathhurst or the Hillclimb at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, we’ve been covering the 1,400 hp SuperVan project for some time – but the big boxy Transit-ish racing van with hypercar-slaying performance never seems to get boring. In this video from the official Top Gear YouTube channel (is Top Gear just a YouTube show, now?), the boxy Ford racer seems to have sprouted an additional 600 peak horsepower in its latest “4.2” iteration, for a stout 2,000 hp total. For his (?) part, the Stig puts all of those horses to work in what appears to be a serious attempt to take the overall track record. I won’t spoil the outcome for you, but suffice it …

Cleanup Group Says It’s on Track to Eliminate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch

It claims it can get rid of the patch within just five years. Trash Hunters Nonprofit environmental organization the Ocean Cleanup has announced that it’s on track to eliminate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch by 2034. If it can get the necessary funds, that is. In a press release, the organization claimed that eliminating the patch once and for all would cost a whopping $7.5 billion — the “first time both a cost and a timeline has been placed on ridding the Pacific Ocean of the environmental hazard.” The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a name given to an estimated 79,000 metric tons of plastic waste floating in the ocean in an area roughly twice the size of Texas. The Ocean Cleanup has made it its mission to fish it out of the water piece by piece. “Today’s announcement is clear: clean oceans can be achieved in a manageable time and for a clear cost,” said founder and CEO Boyan Slat in a statement. “Through the hard work of the past ten years, humanity has …

North Macedonia conservatives on track for election victory – POLITICO

Meanwhile, VMRO-DPMNE candidate Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova will become the country’s first female president — a largely ceremonial position — having won 64.9 percent support with 87 percent of the votes counted, the results showed. Voters in the tiny Balkan country of 2 million have expressed frustration with corruption, the slow pace of reform, and the sluggish advance of North Macedonia’s bid to join the European Union. In 2018 the country reached a historic agreement, changing its name and constitution and ending a decades-long dispute with Greece. The deal allowed Skopje to join NATO in 2020; for the past two years, however, Bulgaria has blocked North Macedonia’s EU bid, demanding its constitution be amended to acknowledge the country’s Bulgarian minority.
