Horde of Obsolete Humanoid Robots Made to Hurl Themselves Into Vat of Liquid Steel for Total Obliteration

Horde of Obsolete Humanoid Robots Made to Hurl Themselves Into Vat of Liquid Steel for Total Obliteration

Privately-developed humanoid robots are advancing at a striking clip, which means today’s innovation may soon be tomorrow’s pile of junk. But with so many other companies racing to develop the hot robot, how do the hundreds of robotics startups clogging the landscape keep their obsolete units away from prying eyes? That question has been asked and answered by at least one robotics firm in the US, Figure AI. This week, Figure released a wild promo video showcasing the “decommissioning” of its F.02 units, involving Arnold Schwarzenegger and an industrial vat of red hot liquid steel. If you’ve seen the 1991 action epic “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” you can probably see where this is heading. The nearly four-minute-long production features numerous F.02 units being directed to leap into a massive vat of liquid steel at a foundry in Imatra, Finland — apparently the only facility that would let Foundry pull off the stunt, given the lithium-ion batteries the bots are powered by. This Week in History: A total eclipse, Britpop and ‘Putin’s revenge’

This Week in History: A total eclipse, Britpop and ‘Putin’s revenge’

This week’s headlines reveal a globe shaken by violence. The Burmese military opens fire on anti-government demonstrators, the Syrian army launches a major assault on Beirut, and the United States reveals harrowing evidence of the Srebrenica massacre. Yet somewhere, the sun is still shining. Sort of. As we prepare for our own upcoming eclipse this week, we look back to 1999 when Europe was captivated by two minutes of totality. Meanwhile, a bizarre 2003 blackout brings a different kind of awe to New York, replacing the city lights with a rare, starlit Manhattan sky. 10 August 1988 – Military opens fire on Burmese demonstrators Security forces in Rangoon fire directly into crowds of peaceful protesters during nationwide demonstrations against dictator Ne Win. The violent clash marked a turning point in the “8888” uprising, which saw thousands of citizens killed across the country. The revolt was ultimately crushed weeks later by a bloody military coup that installed a junta that ruled for decades. The man who forgot himself: life before and after total amnesia

The man who forgot himself: life before and after total amnesia

On the day his life changed, Eric Lampaert woke up and saw his hands. What amazed him was that they were moving in front of him, and he appeared to be the person in control of them. We’re drinking coffee in the Groucho Club in London, and at this point he lets go of his cup and wriggles his fingers. Lampaert is an actor and standup whose work has a strong clowning dimension. His hands always seemed to have minds of their own – and, sometimes, strong differences of opinion. But as he got out of bed that fateful morning, marvelling at the magical things on the ends of his arms, he felt only wonder. What he didn’t yet know was that he had lost his memory, and his life would no longer feel like his own. That was seven years ago, on 17 March 2019, Lampaert says, a date not so much stamped in his memory as retrieved from his journal and recommitted. It was a knock on the door that told him “there …

Richard Smallwood, contemporary gospel musician known for ‘Total Praise,’ dies at 77

(RNS) — Richard Smallwood, a singer and pianist best known for his contemporary gospel music hit “Total Praise,” died Tuesday (Dec. 30). Smallwood was 77. He died of complications of kidney failure at a rehabilitation and nursing center in Sandy Spring, Maryland, his publicist announced. Nominated eight times for a Grammy Award, the Stellar and Dove awardee was known for combining Black gospel and classical genres of music. His ubiquitous song “Total Praise,” introduced with his group Vision in 1996, was later covered in the group Destiny’s Child’s a capella “Gospel Medley,” performed by a cantor at New York’s Carnegie Hall and sung by a choir when President Barack Obama welcomed Pope Francis to the White House. “When you write a particular piece, you have no idea what’s going to become of it — will people like it, or will people sing it?” he told Religion News Service in a 2024 interview when he was honored at the Kennedy Center. “And so, to see the years of people embracing it really means a lot to …
