Rabies death toll rises to 40 in Sindh after elderly man dies

KARACHI: A septuagenarian man died of rabies at a local hospital, raising this year’s tally from the deadly infectious disease in Sindh to 40, officials said on Friday. They said that the victim, a resident of Baldia Town, was bitten by a dog over three weeks back but he did not seek preventive treatment. He passed away at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) on Thursday. The JPMC has recorded over 11,000 dog bite cases and 10 deaths from rabies this year, including the latest one. Recently, a 38-year-old man hailing from Diplo, Tharparkar, and a 12-year-old boy hailing from Hyderabad died of rabies. Experts say a large number of rabies cases go unreported as patients use home remedies or turn to faith healers for “treatment”. They emphasised the need for public awareness, humane control of the dog population and the availability of appropriate treatment in hospitals. While dog bites account for the majority of rabies cases, bites from potentially rabid wild animals can also transmit the virus. After exposure, early wound cleansing, timely rabies …

tourism boom is taking a toll on chillier destinations

tourism boom is taking a toll on chillier destinations

Rising numbers of visitors headed for destinations in northern Europe in the summer of 2026, seeking respite from the heat. For years, summer holidays in Europe have followed a familiar pattern: head south in search of sunshine. But climate change is beginning to turn that logic on its head. As temperatures rise across southern Europe, traditionally popular destinations are facing increasingly difficult summer conditions, from extreme hot temperatures to wildfires and water shortages. Rather than abandoning summer travel, some tourists are beginning to change the destinations they want to spend time in. The trend has even acquired a name: the “coolcation”. For an individual traveller, this can be a sensible response to rising temperatures. A cooler destination can make outdoor activities more comfortable and allow people to continue taking summer holidays while avoiding the most intense heat. For northern European destinations, this could look like an opportunity. Northern Europe (defined as Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Sweden and the UK) recorded a 10% increase in visitor numbers between April and June 2026, compared with the …

The Toll by Neal Shusterman

The Toll by Neal Shusterman

Three years have passed and everybody is somebody else. The boy nobody wanted is a prophet with an honorific. The killer everyone blames is a parade float. And the artificial intelligence that used to run a flawless world has gone quiet and taken up a hobby, which is the single strangest thing The Toll by Neal Shusterman does. Each chapter now opens on a scrap of far-future scripture, footnoted by two rival scholars who agree on nothing and are wrong about almost everything. One of them decides the drowned city of Lenape proves the prophet set a table before his enemies, since the name resembles an old French word for tablecloth. The other calls that ludicrous, then insists a phrase about sitting in the cradle of a great fork must be a fertility reference. They are commenting on events the reader is watching happen. That gap, between the thing and the record of the thing, is what this finale is about. Where Neal Shusterman Leaves the Scythedom Read the series in order: Scythe, then Thunderhead, …

With three prisoners scheduled for execution, southern churches toll their bells

With three prisoners scheduled for execution, southern churches toll their bells

(RNS) — On the first day in 16 years that three death row inmates were scheduled to be executed on the same day, faith groups in Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, Kentucky, Wisconsin and Iowa tolled their bells as part of a campaign led by the Death Penalty Action advocacy group. In Tennessee, they rang for two minutes at 10 a.m. CT that coincided with a scheduled execution in the state. “ We have to be together in our opposition to executions and in our statement that this is not in alignment with the teachings of our faiths,” Abraham Bonowitz, the executive director of Death Penalty Action and co-founder of L’chaim! Jews Against the Death Penalty, told RNS. “ There should never be an execution without protest.” On Thursday morning (Aug. 13), Tennessee executed Anthony Darrell Hines and Oklahoma executed Carlos Cuesta-Rodriguez. Alabama is scheduled to execute Jeremy Williams Thursday evening. All three were convicted of murder. Last year saw a surge in executions, with 47 people put to death, more than any year since 2009. The faith-based effort …

When A Toll Isn’t A Toll

When A Toll Isn’t A Toll

By Benjamin Picton, senior market strategist at Rabobank When A Toll Isn’t A Toll Yields on 10-year Treasuries finished last week up 11bps to 4.48% while yields on 10-year Bunds rose 8.5bps to 2.93%. Those higher borrowing costs came despite signs of weakening in the US jobs market, a weaker-than-expected prices paid figure on the ISM manufacturing index, and a surprisingly weak Eurozone CPI inflation report that follows in the wake of lower than expected inflation readings in the UK. Market-based expectations of the future path of the Fed Funds rate finished the week a little lower than it started, with pricing of a future rate hike pushed out from October to December. 2-year Treasury yields fell by almost 4bps on Thursday after the payrolls report confirmed hiring in June was little better than half the expected figure. This was still enough for the unemployment rate to tick down to 4.2% as a lower participation rate saw the labor force contract. Nevertheless, 2-year yields were higher across the week as sovereign curves bear-steepened. Brent crude …
