My entire home server now fits in one text file

My entire home server now fits in one text file

Running a home server can involve a lot of babysitting. From operating system and Docker updates to the occasional broken configuration, you spend more time maintaining than actually using the server. I finally decided to try something new: separate my data from the host entirely. So I ran a Docker-first Linux Live environment called Lightwhale. I was expecting a lighter OS but ended up with something much better. It gave me the entire infrastructure behind my home server in one Compose file. Related 6 Docker containers/packages I install on every server before anything else The install order nobody tells you about when starting Docker. I realized my server was one file Everything else had become disposable Afam Onyimadu / MUO It recently occurred to me that the file that mattered the most in my entire server setup was docker-compose.yml. The old setup notes, my several bash scripts, many of which I’d forgotten the purpose of, and my README file from 2023 were part of the clutter. The main thing that did the heavy lifting lived …

Alibaba’s Qwen3.7-Plus supports text, video and imagery inputs at low cost of alt=

Alibaba’s Qwen3.7-Plus supports text, video and imagery inputs at low cost of $0.4/$1.6 per 1M token — but it’s proprietary

Alibaba this week released Qwen3.7-Plus, the latest AI large language model (LLM) in its globally beloved and increasingly expansive Qwen family, boasting more multimodal capabilities and a 60% lower cost than the prior, text-only Qwen3.7-Max model released just weeks ago. However, like its immediate predecessor Qwen3.7-Plus is available only under a “closed” commercial license via proprietary application programming interfaces (API) and Qwen Chat. That marks a big departure from the Qwen strategy to date, which was focused mainly on releasing powerful, near state-of-the-art open source models. Those enterprises and users who relied on the open source Qwen models — among them, U.S. giants such as Airbnb — will no doubt be disappointed to see that Alibaba is going closed for its newer releases. Still, the model is worth a look because of its low cost and high performance on multimodal tasks like creating enterprise-grade visuals or analyzing video, imagery and screenshots, which Qwen3.7-Max cannot do (it’s text-only). It is among the cheaper powerful AI models available now, coming in price-wise just above Chinese rival’s new MiniMax-M3’s …

DeepL, known for text translation, now wants to translate your voice

DeepL, a translation company best known for its text tools, released a voice-to-voice translation suite today that covers use cases like meetings, mobile and web conversations, and group conversations for frontline workers through custom apps. The company is also releasing an API that lets outside developers and businesses build on top of DeepL’s tech for customized use cases, such as call centers. “After spending so many years in text translation, voice was a natural step for us,” DeepL CEO Jarek Kutylowski told TechCrunch in an interview. “We have come a long way when it comes to text translation and document translation. But we thought there wasn’t a great product for real-time voice translation.” Kutylowski said that the challenges in creating a real-time translation product center on striking a balance between reducing latency — the delay between someone speaking and the translated audio playing back — and maintaining accurate results. DeepL is releasing add-ons for platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, where listeners can either hear real-time translation while others are speaking in native languages or …

I never text back – and it’s ruining my relationships

I never text back – and it’s ruining my relationships

“There’s no such thing as a bad texter. They just don’t want to respond,” said influencer Delaney Rowe last year on the online talkshow Subway Takes. “People go around thinking being a bad texter is like a pathology, but it’s not. It’s a cop-out.” “I don’t believe in bad texters,” announced radio host Dan Zolot last year. “If you want to answer you will answer.” I scroll guiltily past these arguments knowing that I have 39 unread text messages on my phone. Truthfully, I received every one of those texts with a thrill of happiness. I love to hear from my friends, my sister, my former colleague, and my family group chat. I initiated many of these conversations myself. But when I try to respond, typing seems as onerous as writing a handwritten letter, and I feel overwhelmed by dread. “I’ll write back when I have a moment,” I think. Hours – or days – later, I feel anxious. As time passes, that anxiety compounds with shame. The obligation to respond makes me feel ill; …

4 Things Unsuccessful Men Do When They Text That Keep Them From Getting A Reply

4 Things Unsuccessful Men Do When They Text That Keep Them From Getting A Reply

On December 3, 1992, a 22-year-old test engineer for Sema Group used a personal computer to send what is said to be the first text message — “Merry Christmas” — to a colleague, and text messaging as we know it was born. When it comes to modern-day texting, getting left on read isn’t random. More often, it comes down to subtle telling habits that kill momentum before a conversation ever has a chance. Many men repeat these same small mistakes without even realizing how they come across, leaving the other person feeling bored, pressured, or just totally unsure how to respond. Here are 4 things unsuccessful men do when they text that keep them from getting a reply: 1. They text like an overly enthusiastic teenager I accept that a certain amount of text-speak has slipped into the American vernacular, but recently, when after saying something funny via text to an adult male, I received this back: “OMFGROTFLMAO :-D”  I was left with two questions: 1. What does that mean? 2. Why do I talk to …

Why you should think twice before sending ‘hru’ in a text message

Why you should think twice before sending ‘hru’ in a text message

My brother’s text messages can read like fragments of an ancient code: “hru,” “wyd,” “plz” – truncated, cryptic and never quite satisfying to receive. I’ll often find myself second-guessing whether “gr8” means actual excitement or whether it’s a perfunctory nod. This oddity has nagged at me for years, so I eventually embarked upon a series of studies with fellow researchers Sam Maglio and Yiran Zhang. I wanted to know whether these clipped missives might undermine genuine dialogue, exploring the unspoken signals behind digital shorthand. As we gathered data, surveyed people and set up experiments, it became clear that those tiny shortcuts – sometimes hailed as a hallmark of efficient communication – undermine relationships instead of simplifying them. Short words lead to feeling shortchanged Most people type “ty” and “brb” – for “thank you” and “be right back” – without batting an eye. In a survey we conducted of 150 American texters ages 18 to 65, 90.1 per cent reported regularly using abbreviations in their daily messages, and 84.2 per cent believed these shortcuts had either …
