(RNS) — Several dozen Hindu priests and worshippers were inside a temple in a Cleveland suburb last Friday evening when the peaceful ambience was broken by the sound of shattering glass.  Around 5:30 p.m., someone threw bricks at the windows of Shree Swaminarayan Vadtal Dham, shattering one and sending glass shards flying inside the Richmond Heights temple. While no one was injured, worshippers say the incident alarmed the tight-knit community. Police are not treating the incident as a targeted attack. “There’s no evidence that suggests there’s any hate motivation or racial motivation or religious motivation,” said Evan Wright, a detective with Richmond Heights Police Department, adding that the suspect has been identified but not apprehended and was likely experiencing a mental health crisis. Wright said the investigation is ongoing. Rakesh Ranjan, a psychiatrist who worships at the temple and the director of Cleveland’s chapter of the Coalition of Hindus in North America, had heard about instances of anti-Hindu attacks around the country before, …

Ke Huy Quan on Receiving $100K Residuals Check for ‘Temple of Doom’

Ke Huy Quan is recalling his reaction to learning as a child that his first residual check for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was $100,000. The Oscar winner opened up about the life-changing moment in his new memoir Never Say Die, which hit bookstands on Tuesday. Quan was only 12 years old when he booked his first major role as Short Round in Steven Spielberg‘s 1984 film, so he didn’t realize he would receive residuals for the film in addition to his base pay for Temple of Doom. “One afternoon, I walked into the kitchen and found my parents standing together at the table,” Quan wrote in the memoir, via Entertainment Weekly. “Mom was holding an envelope with my name printed across it. Dad had the papers that had been inside.” The Everything Everywhere All at Once star continued, “They were both smiling, the kind of smile that comes from surprise and disbelief mixed together. They handed everything to me. It was a check from Lucasfilm. It was for almost $100,000, an amount …

Curing Zombies in “The Bone Temple”

Curing Zombies in “The Bone Temple”

We like to think that monsters are timeless. Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy—we know what they look like, how they behave, and what motivates them. But the historian knows better. Monsters are chameleons that reflect their times. They reveal much about the worries and dreams of the societies that produce them. For instance, take Dracula. This monster came to fame with Bram Stoker’s famous 1897 novel. In the book, the Count is an Eastern European ghoul, whose ambition is to storm England, enslave its women, and “pollute” its blood with vampirism. As historians recognize, the context of Stoker’s book is of a time of anxious imperialism. The British Empire was extending deeply into distant lands, and “race” theory was telling the English that their “blood,” while superior to other races, was in danger of being overwhelmed by “foreigners.” In such a climate, a non-English monster, making his way into the homeland and going after its women, was especially frightening. Notably, Dracula was also trying to get his clammy claws on London’s real estate, in a dark …
