The Met Office has put yellow weather warnings over snow and ice in place from this afternoon covering much of the UK. It had a number of yellow warnings in place on Thursday across the country, but most were initially set to expire by 11am, with only a snow and ice alert in Scotland remaining until midnight. But it has now updated its map to show yellow ice warnings for much of the Midlands, North West England, Eastern England, Wales and Northern Ireland from 4pm on Thursday until 10am on Friday, while the snow and ice warning for Scotland has been extended to 10am on Friday. Warmer weather is on the way with the UK finally set to enjoy a spell of sunshine – as temperatures in some parts are expected to match those in Ibiza. After a “disappointingly cool” run of weeks – despite sweltering conditions in Europe – the Met Office forecasts “much warmer conditions” over the next fortnight. At least 14 Jordanian pilgrims have died while on the hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia as temperatures soar in the kingdom. Jordan’s foreign ministry said “14 Jordanian pilgrims died and 17 others were missing” during the performance of hajj rituals. It said its nationals had died “after suffering sun stroke due to the extreme heatwave” and that it had coordinated with Saudi authorities to bury the dead in Saudi Arabia, or transfer them to Jordan. The Iranian Red Crescent chief, Pir Hossein Kolivand, said “five Iranian pilgrims have lost their lives so far in Mecca and Medina during the hajj this year”, but did not say how they died. Mohammed Al-Abdulaali, a spokesperson for the Saudi health ministry, told reporters that more than 2,760 pilgrims suffered from sunstroke and heat stress on Sunday alone. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms for large of parts of the UK after temperatures are predicted to reach as high as 27C. It comes as the UK experiences high temperatures today and over the weekend – before forecasters warn of “thundery breakdowns” on Sunday. The warning is in place from noon to 10pm on Sunday and covers the North West of England, most of Wales, much of central England and the South West. This is the UK, so I don’t want to speak too soon, but it seems that the rain is actually… coming to an end?! For now at least.
