University of Sydney pioneers approach to quantum error correction

University of Sydney pioneers approach to quantum error correction

Researchers at the University of Sydney, Dominic Williamson and Nouédyn Baspin, have developed an innovative new framework for managing quantum errors that could reshape the field of quantum computing. Their theoretical model not only enhances the reliability of storing quantum information but also dramatically reduces the physical resources needed for generating ‘logical qubits,’ the computational units that drive quantum systems. This advancement opens doors to a more compact and efficient form of quantum memory, or ‘quantum hard drive,’ with potential applications across various computing domains. Overcoming quantum error correction barriers In quantum computing, error correction is a major challenge due to the extreme sensitivity of quantum systems to external disturbances, which causes errors that can disrupt calculations. Conventional quantum error correction methods require a large number of qubits (quantum bits) solely for error management, using up much of a quantum computer’s processing power to maintain stability and reduce the chances of data loss or corruption. This excessive use of qubits limits the resources available for actual computing tasks. Dr Dominic Williamson, the lead researcher on …

Sydney council bans same-sex parenting books from libraries for ‘safety of our children’ | Sydney

Sydney council bans same-sex parenting books from libraries for ‘safety of our children’ | Sydney

A Sydney council has voted to place a blanket ban on same-sex parenting books from local libraries in a move the New South Wales government warns could be a breach of the state’s Anti-Discrimination Act. At a meeting last week, Cumberland city council in western Sydney voted on a new strategy for its eight council-run libraries. The amendment, put forward by the former mayor and current councillor Steve Christou, proposed that the council take “immediate action” to “rid” same-sex parents books and materials in its library service. During the meeting, Christou brandished a book he alleged had received “really disturbing” constituent complaints, saying parents were “distraught” to see the book, Same-Sex Parents by Holly Duhig, displayed on a shelf in the children’s section of the library. The book, originally published in the UK, explores the experience of having two mums or two dads and features two men and a young child on the front cover. Six councillors voted in favour of the amendment and five voted against, while four councillors were not present to vote. …

Fashion news! Sydney Sweeney swaps trousers for heels, Mercedes gets chic and Armani’s London exhibition

Fashion news! Sydney Sweeney swaps trousers for heels, Mercedes gets chic and Armani’s London exhibition

I moved here in 1984 and it was crazy. I had been working for Interview Magazine in New York and I came to shoot the scene happening in London. There was this cultural explosion happening with Leigh Bowery, Trojan and Michael Clark and Culture Club. We were in Taboo, and I fell in with people like Princess Julia, Jeffrey Hinton, John Maybury, the director, and Stevie and David from BodyMap. I was sleeping on their couches, I had no idea they were at the epicentre of creative London. I thought I’d seen it all in New York, but London was next level wildness. I learnt an important lesson in those years: a sense of originality. If you copied someone else’s work you were looked down upon. It was not cool. Everyone had their own creative voice — today, so much is made from mood boards off Instagram and Pinterest. It’s bizarre that’s accepted. Source link

Teens plotted to buy guns and attack Jewish people after Sydney bishop was stabbed, police allege

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Four teenagers plotted to buy guns and attack Jewish people days after a bishop was stabbed in a Sydney church, according to police documents cited in news reports on Monday. Five teens, aged 14 to 17, were charged in a Sydney court on Thursday last week with a range of offenses including conspiring to engage in or planning a terrorist act. Police alleged they all “adhered to a religiously motivated, violent extremist ideology” and were part of a network that included a 16-year-old boy charged with stabbing Assyrian Orthodox Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel on April 15 as a church service was being streamed online. According to a police fact sheet tendered to the Sydney Children’s Court, two of the defendants charged last week discussed buying guns on April 19, the same day the bishop’s alleged attacker was charged, News Corp Australia newspapers reported. Gun ownership is heavily restricted in Australia under tough national laws, but there is a black market for firearms in Sydney. Four of the boys charged last week …
