Teacher ‘planned date night with Ann Summers scratch card to reveal she was pregnant with teenager’s child’ | UK News

A teacher allegedly planned a “date night” with an “Ann Summers scratch card” and “rose petals” before revealing to one of her alleged teenage victims that she was pregnant with his child, a court has heard. Rebecca Joynes, 30, allegedly took the teenager’s virginity when he was 16, Manchester Crown Court heard, and had sex with him about 30 times before revealing she was expecting their child. Video interviews which boy B gave to the police after the teacher was arrested for a second time were shown to the jury, during which the youngster claims he was reassured he had been “great” after he lost his virginity to Joynes, the court heard. Joynes was already suspended from her high school job and on bail for alleged sexual activity with another schoolboy, boy A, 15, when she allegedly kissed and fondled the second, boy B, after sending him a photo of her bottom wearing just a thong, a jury heard. European summers will be hotter than predicted because of cleaner air

The regional climate models relied on by planners greatly underestimate summer heat because they don’t factor in more intense sunshine due to falling air pollution, a study has shown. “If models don’t take air pollution changes into account, they will underestimate the intensity of future heatwaves even more than they underestimate mean summer warming,” says Dominik Schumacher at ETH Zürich in Switzerland. “It’s problematic because a lot of European countries strongly rely on these simulations to plan for the future.” Running global climate models requires a lot of expensive computer time, so researchers often look only at smaller regions, allowing them to run more detailed models. These higher-resolution regional models are typically relied on by governments, as their projections for specific locations are supposed to be more accurate than global models. “The regional models …

DNC votes to restore New Hampshire’s delegates for this summer’s convention

The Democratic National Committee voted Tuesday to reinstate New Hampshire’s delegates ahead of this summer’s convention in Chicago, ending months of fighting over the state’s 2024 presidential primary.   “We as a committee and as a national committee have gone through a difficult number of weeks and months of getting to this point, and I know that New Hampshire has gone through a difficult number of weeks and months where some things we’d like to have seen take place did not,” Jim Roosevelt, the co-chair of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee, said during a meeting on Tuesday. “As it happens, all that is behind us now. We have worked out compliance with our rules and with the charter.” New Hampshire, which has a state law on the books requiring it to hold the first presidential primary, had refused to comply with a new Democratic calendar that moved South Carolina to the front of the line. As a result, President Joe Biden did not file to appear on the ballot for New Hampshire’s unsanctioned Jan. 23 …

Drag Race UK vs the World’s second series has truly been the renaissance of Filipina drag queen Marina Summers who has won three challenges during the show’s eight weeks and reached the final in a strong position. Marina has shone in practically every challenge that has come her way and she was even told that she was “born to do drag” by show host RuPaul – and if anyone knows, then it has to be RuPaul. And fans seem to be agreeing with Marina backed by the majority of the fanbase to snatch the crown during tonight’s final. WATCH: Catch the trailer for RuPaul’s Drag Race: UK vs the World However, speaking exclusively to HELLO!, the performer admitted that she didn’t have much of a strategy for the final challenge. She joked: “Well, my strategy this time is not to lose. “Lip syncing is what I do and every time there’s a lip sync challenge, I’m down to do it. Ice-free summers in Arctic possible within next decade, scientists say | Arctic

Ice-free summers in Arctic possible within next decade, scientists say | Arctic

The Arctic could have summer days with practically no sea ice within the next decade due to emissions from burning fossil fuels, a study has found. This would transform the unique habitat, home to polar bears, seals and walruses, from a “white Arctic” to a “blue Arctic” during the summer months, scientists said. The calculation used for “ice free” means less than 1m sq km, in which case the Arctic would be mostly water. The findings, published in the journal Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, suggest the first ice-free day in the Arctic could occur more than 10 years earlier than previous projections. The authors said consistently ice-free Septembers could be expected by 2035 to 2067. The exact year within that period is dependent on how quickly the world reduces the amount of fossil fuels burned. By the end of the century, there is potential for ice-free conditions between May and January under a high-emission scenario, and August to October under a low-emission scenario. Latino-owned Luz Films won Sundance with ‘In the Summers.’ What’s next?

Latino-owned Luz Films won Sundance with ‘In the Summers.’ What’s next?

Last month, “In the Summers,” a queer, Latinx coming-of-age tale about two sisters who spend their summers visiting their father in Las Cruces, N.M., won the U.S. grand jury prize in the dramatic competition at the 40th annual Sundance Film Festival. It was an impressive feat accomplished by a group of first timers. The film is the feature debut of writer-director Alessandra Lacorazza Samudio, who also took home the directing award, becoming the first Latina in the festival’s history to do so. “In the Summers” also serves as the first acting vehicle for René Pérez Joglar, better known as Residente from Puerto Rican hip hop group Calle 13. The “Atrévete-te-te” singer portrays Vicente, the troubled patriarch of a fractured family. Similarly, the indie drama is the inaugural project for Luz Films, an L.A.-based upstart media company focusing on producing Latinx prestige pictures. The venture was launched in 2023 by co-CEOs Sergio Lira and Lynette Coll, along with CFO Cristobal Güell. Lira and Coll say that they set up their own shop because they wanted to …

Kanye West sued by Donna Summer’s estate over ‘stealing’ from I Feel Love | Ents & Arts News

Kanye West sued by Donna Summer’s estate over ‘stealing’ from I Feel Love | Ents & Arts News

Kanye West is being sued by the estate of the late US singer Donna Summer for allegedly “stealing” parts of her music for his new album. It comes after Ozzy Osbourne said earlier this month he refused West permission to use a Black Sabbath sample because he’s an “antisemite” – but claims the rapper used it anyway. The lawsuit says West asked for permission to sample from Summer’s hit song I Feel Love – and engaged in “blatant theft” after Summer’s estate “explicitly denied” the request. Ty Dolla $ign – real name Tyrone Griffin – is also named in the lawsuit filed in California by Summer’s husband Bruce Sudano. Image: Donna Summer performs in 2008. Pic: Reuters It said the pair used “instantly recognisable” parts of Summer’s song in their new track Good (Don’t Die), despite their proposal being rejected due to West’s “controversial history”. The court documents suggest the Summer estate was approached on 31 January to request clearance of the song. This was denied, but the album was released a week later on …

Melting Arctic ice caps helps predict UK heatwaves, study finds – as scientist reveals this summer’s forecast | Climate News

Melting Arctic ice caps helps predict UK heatwaves, study finds – as scientist reveals this summer’s forecast | Climate News

When the UK sizzles during an intense summer heatwave it could well be linked to melting ice caps and glaciers in the frozen North, according to a new analysis. While increased melting due to climate change could make such events even more extreme, the connection may also make heatwaves possible to predict up to a year in advance, the study finds. “We will be able to estimate the exact year of the warm and dry summer in northern Europe more closely in the winter before it occurs,” says Dr Marliena Oltmanns at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton who led the research. Such a forecasting ability could be significant, allowing farmers, hospitals, or power providers time to plan for heatwaves that are already becoming more extreme due to increasing global average temperatures. Researchers have suspected for a while that there is a link between weather extremes in northern Europe and the intense summer melting in the Arctic and subarctic due to climate change – but how they might be connected remained elusive.
