Why Does It Feel Like Everyone I Know Is Lactose Intolerant All Of A Sudden?

In my early twenties, I knew of perhaps one or two people who were lactose intolerant – where the body can’t digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and dairy products. Fast-forward to my mid-thirties and it’s impacting most people I know (myself included). People who could previously glug a glass of milk or eat ice cream and yoghurt with no issues are now facing (often bowel-centred) repercussions. But why is this happening? If you have also noticed more people …

Never Get Blindsided Again by a Sudden Breakup

Never Get Blindsided Again by a Sudden Breakup

People often enter therapy when their relationship is in crisis. I have worked with many people who came to me because they had been “blindsided” by a partner. They were going along, thinking everything was OK, when their partner up and called it quits. It has become clear to me that there are subtle dynamics and behaviors operating within these couples that, while often overlooked, indicate their relationship is headed for trouble. Sadly, had the partners seen them and been able to address them, their relationship might have stood the chance of having a different outcome. Following are some of those dynamics and suggestions for how to address them. Communication is vital in this endeavor. Create a safe atmosphere where each of you feels free to talk about yourselves and your feelings. Make sure you are in a calm state and can come toward your partner from a friendly place. It’s important to be in touch with your caring and loving feelings toward your partner as you talk and listen to each other. By looking …

The Sudden Chumminess of Hunter Biden and Candace Owens

The Sudden Chumminess of Hunter Biden and Candace Owens

It was something of a political hall of mirrors: Hunter Biden arriving at Candace Owens’s house, sitting in a book-filled room decorated with a crucifix and orchids in the shape of a heart, holding a coffee cup labeled conspiracy theorist, and answering a range of questions from a podcast host who has called him “an alleged sex predator” and “A DEGENERATE THAT SHOULD BE IN PRISON” who comes from a “SCUM family.” The first question: “The cocaine that was found at the White House, was it yours?” To say this was an unusual pairing is an understatement. To claim it was Frost/Nixon is an overstatement. But it said something about modern-day politics—and the weirdness of online culture—that the son of a former Democratic president and a right-wing podcaster were sitting there together, conversing for nearly two hours, finding common ground on being misunderstood, on being targeted by a powerful president, and on questioning the circumstances of Charlie Kirk’s death and whether the assassination attempts against Donald Trump were staged. Owens apologized for treating Biden like …

How Sudden Lucidity at Death Became a Science Topic

How Sudden Lucidity at Death Became a Science Topic

A staple of literature through the ages is the last words of famous people. Many private people remember the last words of someone close. In an era where we are constantly told “the mind is just what the brain does,” claims about such terminal lucidity are easy to dismiss: “Those people didn’t really say that. They couldn’t have said it. Physiologically, it’s not possible, or at least not very likely.” So, when social scientist Charles Murray wrote thoughtfully on the topic at the Wall Street Journal late last year, he was taking a risk. Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker promptly sneered in response, “When there is desperation to commune with a loved one, any glimmer of responsiveness can be interpreted as lucidity, exaggerated with each recall and retelling.” (Go here for quotes with no paywall.) As it happened, Murray had cited psychologist Alexander Batthyány’s 2023 book Threshold, a careful analysis of that very topic. And now, at ID: The Future, host Andrew McDiarmid is pleased to present Dr. Batthyány to shed a bit more light on …
