Minnesota – A Model for Building Strong Political Relationships

Minnesota – A Model for Building Strong Political Relationships

I was delighted to be invited by Suzanne Perry of HumanistsMN (a chapter of the American Humanist Association) to be a featured speaker for their 2024 National Day of Reason Breakfast and Reception at the Minnesota State Capitol. I first learned of the event from Sarah Levin of Secular Strategies, a consultant for the Center for Freethought Equality, after she spoke at their 2022 event. Sarah excitedly told me about the great turnout and the strong relationships between the elected officials and the humanist and atheist community. She thought that Minnesota was ripe to form a state secular caucus modeled on the national Congressional Freethought Caucus. Sarah organized Zoom meetings to explore the idea with HumanistsMN activists and elected officials and soon the Minnesota Secular Government Caucus was established. Today, this Caucus has thirty state legislators from a variety of religious and non-religious traditions. This May, I saw first-hand the strong relationships that have been built between our community, religious allies, and Minnesota elected officials. There were over ninety participants at the event—up significantly over …

What You Need In A Relationship To Feel A Strong Romantic Connection, According To Astrology

The fifth house in the natal chart is connected to dating and romance, representing the initial stages of a blossoming courtship. According to professional astrologer Luci Alfano, this means that the fifth house can provide insight into what you need to feel swooned by a potential romantic partner.  “If the people you have dated do not bring that romantic energy that you need, it’s probably because they are not aligning with your fifth house,” Alfano explained in a TikTok video, sharing that you should check “the sign that rules your fifth and the planets for more information on what you need when it comes to romance in your relationships.” As a relationship deepens, it graduates from the fifth and moves to the seventh, which is tied to commitments, long-term relationships, and marriage. But the fifth house can teach us about our dating style, what partners we attract in the short term and how we fall in love.  What you need in a relationship to feel a strong romantic connection, according to astrology Aries 5th house …

Reddit Posts $575 Million Loss Tied to I.P.O. but Also Strong Growth

Reddit on Tuesday posted a more than $500 million quarterly loss in its first earnings report as a public company, largely due to stock-based compensation expenses incurred during its initial public offering in March. But the social media company also saw robust revenue and user growth, underscoring the potential of its digital advertising business as people flock to the site. Last month, Google, Meta and Snap also reported rising advertising sales and double-digit revenue growth. Reddit’s revenue was $243 million in the first quarter, up 48 percent from $163.7 million a year earlier and above Wall Street estimates of $214 million, according to data compiled by FactSet. The net loss was $575.1 million, compared with a loss of $60.9 million a year earlier. Stock-based compensation expenses totaled $595.5 million, versus $13.2 million a year earlier. Daily active users jumped to 82.7 million, up 37 percent from a year earlier. The result sent Reddit’s shares soaring 17 percent to $58 in after-hours trading. Steve Huffman, Reddit’s co-founder and chief executive, attributed the growth to the company’s …

Bird flu: ‘Strong evidence’ suggests virus has passed from mammals to humans for first time | Science & Tech News

Scientists fear bird flu has spread from mammals to humans for the first time, marking another step in the evolution of the deadly virus. New analysis concludes there is “strong evidence” that a Texas farm worker who tested positive for the H5N1 virus caught it from sick dairy cattle. Although there have been other people infected with the virus in recent years – including some who have died – they all acquired it from birds. There is growing concern about the failure of American authorities to contain the spread of the virus. So far 36 herds in nine states have tested positive. But testing of milk has suggested the virus has spread far more widely. The longer it spreads unchecked in a domesticated mammal, the greater the chance of it becoming adapted to a new species – and being passed on to humans who have close contact. According to the report in The New England Journal of Medicine, the unidentified man’s symptoms were mild. He developed the eye infection conjunctivitis but had no fever and …

Why French music exports are still going strong

Why French music exports are still going strong

Rapper Ninho in concert at Les Vieilles Charrues festival, in Carhaix-Plouguer, France, in July 2022. FRED TANNEAU/AFP French music continues to sell well abroad. This is the main finding of the latest study by the National Center for Music (CNM) released on Monday, April 29. In 2023, the public institution recorded 424 export certifications – single or album produced in France – an increase of 30 % compared to 2022. Ninho (12 tracks), Aya Nakamura (nine tracks), PNL (nine tracks) and Indila (nine titles) are the artists with the most certified tracks. The United States, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and China are the countries where French productions are most successfully exported. The vitality of French music abroad can be explained first and foremost by the phenomenon of synchronization, which refers to the placement of a musical production within an audiovisual work. Thus, listeners to Charles Aznazour’s 1964 song “Hier encore” were buoyed by its appearance on the soundtrack of the Netflix series Lupin, starring Omar Sy. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny, who sampled it on …

Global Payments forecasts full-year profit above estimates on strong spending

Global Payments forecast better-than-expected profit for 2024 on Wednesday, as a strong labor market boosts consumer spending. Payment technology companies have largely downplayed worries of a spending slowdown despite higher-for-longer rates and elevated inflation as finances of most U.S. consumers remain healthy. Global Payments forecast full-year adjusted profit between $11.54 and $11.70 per share, largely above analysts’ average estimate of $11.59 per share, according to data from LSEG. Last week, Visa, the world’s largest payments processor, posted second-quarter profit that sailed past analysts’ estimates on the back of strong e-commerce trends. Global Payments forecast 2024 adjusted net revenue between $9.17 billion and $9.30 billion, broadly in line with analysts’ average estimate of $9.24 billion. On an adjusted basis, the Atlanta-based company earned $2.59 per share in the three months ended March, beating analysts’ average estimate of $2.57. Source link
