A quick heads up: The film­mak­er Ken Burns has just released his new doc­u­men­tary on Leonar­do da Vin­ci. Run­ning near­ly four hours, the film offers what The New York Times calls a “thor­ough and engross­ing biog­ra­phy” of the 15th-cen­tu­ry poly­math. Cur­rent­ly air­ing on PBS, the film can be streamed online through Decem­ber 17th. If you reside in the US, you can watch Part 1 here, and Part 2 here. The film’s trail­er appears above. In 2015, Meta had a problem with its ad business. The company, then Facebook, was reckoning with a slowdown in ad pricing growth, caused by a shortfall in data needed to train its system that personalized ads and other content for users. Against this backdrop, Meta in 2017 launched in-house streaming platform Facebook Watch. It announced plans to spend more than $1 billion on the vertical, signing splashy deals for original content starring Elizabeth Olsen, Bill Burry and Catherine Zeta-Jones, among other names, and licensing premium content with plans to become an exclusive TV hub. By Meta’s thinking, the service could be a goldmine of user data it could exploit for targeted ads. Last year, Meta quietly shut down its original programming arm for the streaming platform. A proposed class action, filed in Illinois federal court on Monday, points to the shuttering of the service as part of an allegedly anticompetitive agreement struck by the company to cede the video-streaming market to Netflix by hobbling Facebook Watch. This is the point where it becomes obvious how a VPN client makes life easier. There are really only two steps to follow. The first one is to select the server. On an iPhone using ExpressVPN, there’s a prompt for Current Location. I selected that and picked the United States, then Chicago. I then clicked the big red Connect button and watched it turn green. That means I was connected to the Chicago server and was ready to watch a Netflix show. Every VPN app works about the same: Select the country and city, then click the big connect button. In my case, once I was connected to that Chicago server, I could then go to Netflix.com to watch Stranger Things without any problems. It also works with Netflix’s apps on your smartphone or your tablet, as long as your VPN app is also running on that device. In case you are wondering, this is perfectly legal. I pay for Spotify Premium every month. Yes, there’s a free version, but for me, spending a comparatively small sum is worth it. Considering all I have access to, it’s great value and helps to support the entertainment industry. Here’s how I make sure I’m getting the best bang for my buck. Not Paying Out for Too Many Streaming Services Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, Amazon Music, Tidal: there are so many music streaming platforms now that it can be hard to decide which to go with. Nonetheless, it’s important to find one or two that you like and stick with them. You’re wasting money if you’re paying for numerous streaming services. Your personal preference will dictate which interface you like best; otherwise, they all have similar features and content, so choose what’s right for you and don’t stray from that path.
