Katherine Stewart Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy

Katherine Stewart Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy

This week, author and journalist Katherine Stewart joins host Rev. Paul Brandeis Raushenbush to discuss the rise of Christian Nationalism, Trump’s authoritarian tendencies, and the weaponization of faith for political gain. Together, they dive into the current political climate, the deep divisions within American society, and how knowledge and organizing are key to defending democracy. Katherine’s latest book, out on February 18th, Money, Lies, and God: Inside the Movement to Destroy American Democracy, explores the Christian Nationalist movement, which is fueled by the ultra-wealthy to protect their fortunes at the expense of democracy. Building on the foundation of her previous work, The Power Worshippers, Katherine’s new book reveals how these powerful forces exploit religious narratives to erode democratic institutions. “Extreme levels of inequality are eroding our democracy. This is something that we need to understand. I think there was nothing more stark than to see perhaps the group of the richest men in the world attending Trump’s inauguration. You had Bezos there, you had Musk there with his salute, whatever. I mean, you have …

Music producer Richard Perry, who worked with Ringo Starr, Barbra Streisand and Rod Stewart, dies | Ents & Arts News

Richard Perry, a hitmaking record producer who worked with Carly Simon, Rod Stewart, Ringo Starr and the Beatles, has died aged 82. Perry, a recipient of a Grammys Trustee Award in 2015, died on Tuesday at a Los Angeles hospital after suffering cardiac arrest, friend Daphna Kastner said. “He maximised his time here,” said Ms Kastner, who called him a “father friend” and said he was godfather to her son. “He was generous, fun, sweet and made the world a better place. The world is a little less sweeter without him here. But it’s a little bit sweeter in heaven.” Perry, who dated celebrities such as Jane Fonda and Elizabeth Taylor, was widely known as a “musician’s producer”. Singers turned to him for a variety of reasons, including to try to update their sound, as in Barbra Streisand’s case, or to revive their career, like for Fats Domino. “Richard had a knack for matching the right song to the right artist,” Streisand wrote in her 2023 memoir, My Name is Barbra. Starr’s album Ringo, released …

The Legacy of a Prince by Kate Stewart

The Legacy of a Prince by Kate Stewart

One Last Rainy Day marks the triumphant return to Kate Stewart’s beloved Ravenhood universe, this time through the haunting perspective of Dominic King. As the first installment in the Ravenhood Legacy series, this novel masterfully weaves together themes of sacrifice, redemption, and the devastating power of love against the backdrop of a morally gray vigilante brotherhood. The Story Behind the Legacy Set in the familiar streets of Triple Falls, the novel introduces us to Dominic King – a complex character whose stoic exterior masks deep-seated trauma and an unwavering sense of justice. When Cecelia Horner arrives in town, Dom’s carefully constructed world begins to crumble, forcing him to confront the possibility that there might be more to life than vengeance. Strengths and Literary Achievement Stewart’s prose shines brightest in her ability to capture the raw intensity of emotional moments. The rain-soaked encounters between Dom and Cecelia crackle with electric tension, while the brotherhood scenes pulse with an undercurrent of barely contained violence. The author’s signature style—a blend of poetic introspection and gritty realism—reaches new heights …

The Many Contradictions of Martha Stewart

The Many Contradictions of Martha Stewart

By the time Martha Stewart rose to fame, family life in the United States looked very different than it had during her childhood. American mothers had entered the workforce en masse, and when Stewart’s first book was published, in 1982, many women were no longer instructing their daughters on the finer points of homemaking fundamentals like cooking meals from scratch or hosting holiday gatherings. Stewart’s meticulous guides to domestic life ended up filling a maternal vacuum for many of her fans, and she inspired both devotion and envy. Oprah Winfrey, no stranger to hard work herself, once summed up the ire that many people felt about Stewart: “Who has the time for all of this? For every woman who makes a complicated gingerbread house, a million don’t even have the time to bake a cookie.” At a moment when American women were already feeling the exhaustion of the second shift, Stewart seemed to suggest that they toil overtime to beautify their second work environment too. But despite being most famous as a homemaker, an occupation …

Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum Acquires $22 M. Residential Building

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston has purchased a 62-unit apartment building for $22.8 million, securing the only non-museum property on the block adjacent to its new wing. Located at 14 Palace Road and 11 Tetlow Street in Boston’s Fenway Court, the five-floor residential building now makes the museum, constructed as a 15th-century Venetian palace, a landlord for its tenants. The museum said its acquisition of the building was a move to safeguard the area from potential development that could threaten the current state of the museum’s surrounding area and the experience of visitors. Related Articles The money for the building’s acquisition is separate from the museum’s funds that go to exhibitions, programs, and conservation of work in the collection. In 2023, the museum reported $19.3 million in revenue in 2023. “We believe this was the best course of action for the neighborhood, ensuring no negative impact on the community, our neighbors, or the museum’s visitors,” Hardwick said in a statement to Boston Business Journal, which first reported news of the sale. The deal …

Ex-Tory MP Rory Stewart: ‘I guess my hand will float over Labour, but will probably come down on Lib Dems or the Greens’ | Rory Stewart

Ex-Tory MP Rory Stewart: ‘I guess my hand will float over Labour, but will probably come down on Lib Dems or the Greens’ | Rory Stewart

Rory Stewart, 51, has been a diplomat, an academic, an adventurer and a politician. He served as a deputy governor in Iraq following the 2003 invasion. Between 2010 and 2019 he was a Conservative MP for Penrith and the Border, resigning having lost a leadership election to Boris Johnson. His podcast with Alastair Campbell, The Rest Is Politics, boasts more than 200,000 regular listeners; his book, Politics on the Edge, now out in paperback, reflects on his decade in government. Do you think we’re seeing the death of the Tory party?I think there are two possibilities. One is it experiences defeat, it recognises it’s got itself on the wrong path and it moves back to the centre, which is what happened, broadly speaking, under David Cameron. The other is that it experiences defeat as confirmation that it needs to lean ever further to the right – the temptation of the Suella Braverman faction or even out to the fringes of Nigel Farage. In your book, you recall how Liz Truss suggested your fatal flaw was …

Time may be up for the Tories, but their legacy of lies will live on | Stewart Lee

“It’s the lying I can’t stand.” That’s the close of the affair cliche isn’t it? We can forgive so much – incompetence, petulance, flatulence – but in the end dishonesty derails things. I suppose that’s why the nation’s 14-year abusive relationship with the Conservative party is finally finished. That’s all folks, bar an argument about who gets Natalie Elphicke, the political equivalent of a smelly pet dog with dangly yellowing genitals and incontinence that the most compassionate partner will, ultimately, come to regret taking. Yes. It’s the lying we can’t stand. Some of Rishi Sunak’s faults are excusable. It is understandable that he would not consider the sacrifice of the soldiers of D-day especially significant when his own parents had so nobly sacrificed his family’s Sky TV subscription to pay his Winchester College school fees. But it was on Tuesday of the week before last that, unforgivably, lying Sunak vomited out his instantly discredited lie about Labour’s £2,000 tax plans, live in an ITV debate against the lightning-reflexed Keir Starmer. Luckily Starmer shut Sunak’s false …

“These people are f***ing children!”: Jon Stewart torches GOP freakout over Biden’s Israel ultimatum

“These people are f***ing children!”: Jon Stewart torches GOP freakout over Biden’s Israel ultimatum

Comedian Jon Stewart on Thursday’s edition of “The Daily Show” called out Republican hypocrisy in their reactions to President Joe Biden’s vow to stop providing Israel with offensive weapons in the event of a full-scale invasion of the city of Rafah. Stewart began the discussion by highlighting clips of Fox News anchors who called Biden’s foreign policy decision “a moral failing we can’t even begin to calculate.” Stewart mocked the response by comparing it to the right-wing freakout over alleged liberal efforts to go after home appliances.  “Maybe it’s an appliance that changed its name to be more inclusive now? Is Mr. Coffee They/Them Coffee? Is that the danger we now face?” he quipped. However, Stewart highlighted that the ultimatum Biden has given Israel to not invade the city isn’t as dramatic as they are making it out to be.  “Oh my God!” Stewart said in a fake outrage, “The Biden administration has paused one shipment of 3,500 munitions, of the over 300,000 munitions Israel has already dropped on Gaza, to try and prevent the Israelis from attacking the area where …

The Twilight star, 34, who is set to make her directorial debut with an adaptation of Lidia Yuknavitch’s 2011 memoir, The Chronology of Water, vocalised her gripes in a new interview with Net-A-Porter. “There’s a thinking that we can check these little boxes… It’s easy for them to be like, ‘Look what we’re doing. We’re making Maggie Gyllenhaal’s movie! We’re making Margot Robbie’s movie!’ And you’re like, OK, cool. You’ve chosen four,” Stewart said. “And I’m in awe of those women, I love those women,” she clarified, before adding, “[but] it feels phony. If we’re congratulating each other for broadening perspective, when we haven’t really done enough, then we stop broadening.” The Spencer actor has previously directed movie shorts, an episode of 2020’s …
