Met’s handling of new evidence about Stephen Lawrence case to be reviewed | Doreen Lawrence

An independent police force will review the Metropolitan police’s handling of new evidence relating to the murder of Stephen Lawrence 30 years after his death, the mayor of London has said. It comes after the Met commissioner, Mark Rowley, apologised to Stephen’s mother, Doreen Lawrence, for not fulfilling a promise to answer questions stemming from a BBC investigation into the murder of the 18-year-old in 1993. The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said that the Lawrence family had been “let down” by the police and that Rowley would be asking a separate force to review the Met’s handling of “fresh evidence”. The BBC said Lady Lawrence was promised an explanation after the broadcaster named Matthew White as the sixth suspect in the case last year. Stephen review – fact blurs with fiction in powerfully raw study of addiction | Film

The line between fact and fiction is thin to vanishing in this Liverpool-set experimental docudrama, a study of addiction and how it rumbles down through generations. It’s directed by visual artist Melanie Manchot and is being shown as a multiscreen installation in Cornwall as well as screening in cinemas. Manchot worked with a Liverpool recovery group, hiring members, with lived experience, as actors. At its worst the result has a bit of a workshop feel, stilted and a bit studied; there’s also expressionist dancing. But at its best, this is a painful, raw study of addiction, with a powerful, committed performance by Stephen Giddings. Giddings plays himself (or a version of himself), a recovering alcoholic and aspiring actor up for the lead in a film; the character is called Tom, a bank cashier who had problems in the past with gambling. Tom has made a fresh start with girlfriend Sarah, who’s pregnant, and together they’re buying a flat – but Tom has started betting again, and alarmingly, he’s dipping into the bank funds at work. …

Josie Gibson Addresses Stephen Mulhern Romance Rumours

Josie Gibson Addresses Stephen Mulhern Romance Rumours

Josie Gibson has spoken out amid speculation that she and fellow presenter Stephen Mulhern are an item. The daytime star and Dancing On Ice host sparked a lot of conversation earlier this month when they were snapped appearing to hold hands on the set of Ant and Dec’s final episode of Saturday Night Takeaway. At the time, Josie wound up fuelling this conversation when she told the Daily Mail: “I’m in love with Stephen Mulhern. There you go. But story of my life, I don’t think he loves me.” However, for those who took the former Big Brother winner at her word, she’s now insisted she was only joking. When the subject of the Catchphrase host was raised, Josie told OK! magazine: “He’s so lovely. We are really good friends, I really adore him, but there’s no romance in the air. But he’s so nice.” Stephen Mulhern Ken McKay/ITV/Shutterstock She added: “Every bloke that I come in contact with, the press seems to think that I’m having it off with them. People must think I’m …

Gogglebox stars Stephen and Daniel announce divorce | Ents & Arts News

One of Gogglebox’s longest-serving sofa critics has announced his divorce, six years after tying the knot. Stephen Lustig-Webb and his husband Daniel have appeared on the hit Channel 4 programme together since 2019, but quit last year, saying they wanted to “explore other opportunities”. The pair, who run a hairdressing salon together, got engaged in 2016 and later married in 2018. Over the weekend Stephen confirmed their split, but said they planned to remain “forever friends”. Demonstrating their amicable break-up, Daniel posted a short video on Instagram showing them happily riding a tandem bike around Brighton – their hometown – along with the song Good Life from Inner City and the jokey message: “Riding tandem straight out of this marriage #beryl #bff”. Met chief apologises to Stephen Lawrence’s mother over handling of sixth suspect | Stephen Lawrence

The Metropolitan police commissioner has apologised to the mother of Stephen Lawrence for not fulfilling a promise to explain why his force failed to properly handle evidence against one of the suspects in the teenager’s murder. A BBC investigation in 2023 identified Matthew White as the sixth suspect in the case, where only five had previously been known. The broadcaster said Doreen Lawrence had been promised answers to her questions about the way police handled the investigation. Despite initial correspondence with the deputy assistant commissioner Matt Ward, none has been given. The Met commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, has now apologised, saying: “On top of the failures over the decades, this is totally unacceptable.” Stephen Lawrence was murdered in April 1993 by a racist gang in Eltham, south-east London, as he ran to catch a bus with his friend Duwayne Brooks. Only two of the 18-year-old’s killers – Gary Dobson and David Norris – have been brought to justice. The original investigation into his death was hampered by institutional racism in Scotland Yard and claims corrupt …

Met Police apologise to Stephen Lawrence’s mother for breaking promise | UK News

The Metropolitan Police have apologised to Stephen Lawrence’s mother after failing to give information on a suspect involved in his murder 31 years ago. The force acknowledged it failed to fulfil a promise to Baroness Doreen Lawrence to answer questions about a sixth suspect believed to have been involved in her 18-year-old son’s murder. Stephen Lawrence was killed by a gang of five or six racist attackers in southeast London while running to catch a bus with his friend Duwayne Brooks on 22 April 1993. Only two people, Gary Dobson and David Norris, were brought to justice for the crime. The duo were jailed for life in 2012. Stephen Colbert Aspires to Return to Acting, Cites Dream Role

Stephen Colbert closed out Los Angeles’ annual PaleyFest TV festival on Sunday afternoon, as he sat down for a conversation with comedian Ben Schwartz about his career and time at The Late Show desk. During the wide-ranging chat inside the Dolby Theatre — which spanned from Colbert’s start in Chicago’s improv scene to his stint as a Sunday school teacher and his love of fantasy films — Schwartz asked the host if he would ever want to return to acting, which he went to school for. “I was purely acting up until I had The Late Show,” Colbert recalled, as he had been in character on The Colbert Report and The Daily Show. “One of the weirdest things about taking the job is my manager, James “Babydoll” Dixon, when he said, ‘Hey, it’s you.’ And I went, ‘Me?’ And he said, ‘Yeah, do you want to do it?’ And I’m like, ‘James, I’m an actor.’ Like, if I do the show, it’s the first time in my life I wasn’t inhabiting a character all the …

JImmy Kimmel, Stephen Colbert Respond to New Trump Oscars Criticism

Former President Donald Trump was roundly mocked on late-night television for an error-laden social media post in which he confused Jimmy Kimmel and Al Pacino as the presenter of this year’s best picture Oscar. On Wednesday, the presumptive Republican nominee for president drew some attention away from his hush money trial, which is now in the jury selection process in Manhattan, with a post on his Truth Social platform in which he reignited a feud with Kimmel, who hosted the Oscar ceremony on March 10, more than five weeks ago.  In part, Trump posted: “Stupid Jimmy Kimmel, who still hasn’t recovered from his horrendous performance and big ratings drop as Host of The Academy Awards, especially when he showed he suffered from TDS, commonly known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, to the entire World by reading on air my TRUTH about how bad a job he was doing that night, right before he stumbled through announcing the biggest award of all, ‘Picture of the Year.’” Trump’s post was full of multiple factual errors, including the confusion of …

Colbert addressed Trump’s criticism of Kimmel on Wednesday night’s instalment ofThe Late Show, and fiercely told the former president to leave Kimmel alone. “You keep my friend Jimmy Kimmel’s name out of your weird little wet mouth, OK?” Colbert said sternly. Colbert continued: “I’m mad. Jimmy Kimmel is my podcast brother from Strike Force Five. And I have vowed to defend him until my death or until the next ad for Mint Mobile.” “And for the record, sir, Jimmy did an incredible job as host. Oscar viewership was up four per cent. That’s right. This year, four more people watched.” The CBS late-night show host joked that Trump was “staying laser-focused on the issues that voters care most about”. “That’s right, in the middle of a presidential campaign and countless federal …

Donald Trump’s Courtroom Nap Awakens Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert

The moment that the world learned Donald Trump had an impromptu snooze on the first day of his hush money trial, late-night TV writers everywhere rubbed their hands together in glee. “After years of anticipation, the first criminal trial of a former president has begun,” Jon Stewart began on Monday’s episode of The Daily Show. “And by all accounts, it is absolutely riveting.” He went on to share a clip of New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman telling CNN’s Jake Tapper about the courtroom nap, which Trump’s campaign has naturally denied ever happened. (The incident itself could not be caught on camera, as those weren’t permitted in the courtroom.) “Trump appears to be sleeping. His head keeps dropping down and his mouth goes slack,” Tapper recounted, imploring Haberman to “tell us about that.” She replied, “Well, Jake, he appeared to be asleep.” “Hey, Jake, what part of head down, eyes closed, drool coming out of his mouth do you not fucking get over here?” teased Stewart. “Imagine committing so many crimes, you get bored at …
