Attacks on Jess Phillips show how online abuse of women is intended to keep them out of the public square

British MP Jess Phillips describing the online attacks she has received from Elon Musk in recent days as “very, very, very tiring” will have struck a chord with many women. Powerful men trying to silence women happens so often that it rarely makes news. But Musk’s comments calling Phillips, who currently serves as safeguarding minister, a “rape genocide apologist” and saying she should be in prison has brought the online abuse of women politicians, and the danger that it presents, back into sharp focus. Never before has an overseas tech mogul (who happens to be the world’s richest man) targeted government ministers and MPs for personal abuse like this. The accusations have encouraged others to attack Phillips, posing a very real threat to her safety. Phillips has reportedly been assigned close protection officers and been told not to go out in public alone. Want more UK politics coverage from academic experts? Hate Onstage at Madison Square Garden

Hate Onstage at Madison Square Garden

We might as well start with the lowlight of last night’s Trump campaign rally at Madison Square Garden. That would be Tony Hinchcliffe, a podcaster who’s part of Joe Rogan’s circle, and who was the evening’s first speaker. “These Latinos, they love making babies too. Just know that. They do. They do. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside,” he joked. “Just like they did to our country.” A minute later: “I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah, I think it’s called Puerto Rico.” It took a few more minutes before he got to the joke about Black people loving watermelons. Novel, edgy stuff—for a minstrel show in 1874. Other speakers were only somewhat better. A childhood pal of Donald Trump’s called Vice President Kamala Harris “the anti-Christ” and “the devil.” The radio host Sid Rosenberg called her husband, Doug Emhoff, “a crappy Jew.” Tucker Carlson had a riff about Harris vying to …

When 20,000 Americans Held a Pro-Nazi Rally in Madison Square Garden in 1939

When 20,000 Americans Held a Pro-Nazi Rally in Madison Square Garden in 1939

Above, two-time Academy Award nominee Marshall Curry presents A Night at The Garden, a film that revisits a night in February 1939 when “20,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism — an event largely forgotten from U.S. history.” As we described it back in 2017, the film documents the following scene: What you’re looking at is the 1939 “Pro-American Rally” (aka Pro-Nazi Rally) sponsored by the German American Bund at Madison Square Garden on George Washington’s 207th Birthday. Banners emblazoned with such slogans as “Stop Jewish Domination of Christian Americans,” “Wake Up America. Smash Jewish Communism,” and “1,000,000 Bund Members by 1940” decorated the great hall. New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia—an Episcopalian with a Jewish mother—considered canceling the event, but ultimately he, along with the American Jewish Committee and the American Civil Liberties Committee decreed that the Bund was exercising its right to free speech and free assembly. A crowd of 20,000 filled the famous sports venue in mid-town Manhattan to capacity. 1,500 police officers were present to render …

‘I love this country’: the migrant hero who tackled Leicester Square attacker | UK news

Two weeks ago Abdullah, a Pakistani-born man living in the UK, was watching the news in fear. Far-right riots had spread across the country, with mosques being attacked and hotels housing asylum seekers set alight. After a horrific knife attack on children in Southport, disinformation spread quickly on social media falsely claiming the perpetrator was a Muslim seeking asylum in the UK. “Everyone was concerned, scared. They were scared of going to the mosque. They were not able to do their religious obligations,” said the security guard who lives in London. “Especially my friends who are living in Manchester and in the north, they were more concerned because there were more protests over there.” Little did Abdullah know that just days after the riots had appeared to subside, he would be at the centre of another appalling story involving an attack on a child. But the 29-year-old was not to be a blame figure, rather one praised for his bravery and selflessness. The incident, in London’s Leicester Square, left a 34-year-old mother and her 11-year-old …

Leicester Square: Man charged after girl, 11, stabbed ‘eight times’ on visit to London | UK News

A man who has been charged after an 11-year-old girl was stabbed in central London has been pictured for the first time. Ioan Pintaru, 32, has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a bladed article less than a day after the girl was injured in an attack in Leicester Square. He is accused of stabbing her “eight times” after grabbing her while she was with her mother. Initial reports suggested the girl’s mum, 34, was also stabbed in the incident but police have confirmed blood from her daughter was mistaken as her own injuries. The court heard Pintaru is a Romanian citizen of no fixed address, while prosecutor David Burns said a woman and her 11-year-old daughter were in Leicester Square as tourists. A man then “approached the girl, placed her into a headlock, he’s then stabbed her eight times to the body”, Mr Burns said. He added she was wounded in the face, shoulder, wrist and neck area. Mr Burns told the court the girl is still in hospital and will need …

The big picture: precarious lives and playfulness in a London square | Photography

This picture is the cover image of Dominoes, a new photobook by Roland Ramanan that tells the story of a unique public space in east London, Gillett Square. The square was opened in Hackney, in one of the most deprived wards in the UK, by London mayor Ken Livingstone in 2006, on a site that was previously a car park. Neighbouring derelict factory premises were redeveloped by a local co-operative as a culture centre, and a series of small business units were created around the new space. The ambition was to establish a communal area “with the potential to become something specific – or remain not really anything at all… a place to see, hear, feel, smell, taste and discover wonderful and incredible things”. Since 2012, Ramanan has been documenting how those civic hopes and ambitions turned out. He has watched as life of that square became “an ecosystem in which skateboarders, parents, children, hula-hoopers, domino players, DJs, drinkers and addicts all intermingle”. His book is a microcosm of urban life through the years of …

Ursula von der Leyen to square off against rival candidates | World | News

Tonight, the political spotlight is on Maastricht as Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, faces off with seven other lead candidates in a European election debate. The event marks the first time these candidates will debate on stage, providing a glimpse into their differing approaches to key European issues. Von der Leyen’s rivals for the EU’s top post represent a broad political spectrum. The list includes: Walter Baier (Party of the European Left) Bas Eickhout (European Green Party) Valeriu Ghilețchi (European Christian Political Movement) Maylis Roßberg (European Free Alliance) Nicolas Schmit (Party of European Socialists) Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party) Anders Vistisen (Identity and Democracy Party) The debate, co-hosted by POLITICO and Studio Europa Maastricht, will focus on climate change, security, and democracy, themes crucial to the EU’s future. Von der Leyen’s team aims to present her as a warmer, more personal leader, contrasting with her reputation as a no-nonsense crisis manager. Since 2019, she has overseen the EU through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic …
