It Sounds an Awful Lot Like OpenAI Is Adding Ads to ChatGPT

It Sounds an Awful Lot Like OpenAI Is Adding Ads to ChatGPT

Ads inside ChatGPT may be on the horizon. Ad Age They’re not copping to much yet, but recent hiring activity and wishy-washy statements make it seem an awful lot like OpenAI is planning to introduce ads into its suite of products like ChatGPT. As the Financial Times reports, the company is hiring ad talent away from its big tech rivals like Google and Meta. And ad-oriented job listings at the company that the FT spotted on LinkedIn offer a similar sense. So far, even the free versions of OpenAI’s products have remained ad-free. Of course, the company is currently swimming in money — in the two years since its flagship chatbot dropped, OpenAI’s valuation skyrocketed to $157 billion — but amid reports of shrinking traffic and the extremely expensive nature of AI infrastructure, it may well be starting to feel the squeeze. If it did start to put ads into ChatGPT, the formerly nonprofit OpenAI would be crossing a Rubicon of sleaziness; the obvious integration would be to jump on users asking things like “best air fryer” and …

‘Make America Healthy Again’ Sounds Good Until You Start Asking Questions

‘Make America Healthy Again’ Sounds Good Until You Start Asking Questions

Americans don’t typically have a reason to think about the fluoride in their water, but this is not a typical week. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the former independent presidential candidate whom Donald Trump is eyeing as his health czar, has vowed to remove the mineral from drinking water if he is appointed to the next administration. Kennedy has said that the chemical lowers children’s IQ, even though studies overwhelmingly show that it is safe. Trump apparently agrees, and in his victory speech on Wednesday, he told Kennedy to “go have a good time” working on public health. The prospect of giving Kennedy any semblance of power over the nation’s health is alarming, and not only because of his preoccupation with fluoride. (And to be fair, many scientists have made serious and nuanced inquiries about fluoride.) Kennedy, an environmental lawyer with no background in health, is best known for his skepticism, if not outright antagonism, toward vaccines. He also has a long track record of championing other pseudoscientific and conspiratorial views, such as the baseless belief …

Babies’ early sounds are more purposeful than previously thought, study suggests

Babies’ early sounds are more purposeful than previously thought, study suggests

New research published in PLOS One suggests that the vocalizations babies make in their first year of life follow specific patterns, challenging the long-held belief that these early sounds are random. By analyzing all-day home recordings of infants, researchers found that babies actively explore different types of sounds, even when not prompted by adults. These early vocalizations often occur in clusters, hinting at an organized process of vocal development that may be crucial for later speech and communication. While much research has focused on how social interaction and imitation of caregivers contribute to language learning, less attention has been given to babies’ own vocal exploration. The researchers wanted to investigate whether babies practice making different kinds of sounds independently of adult interaction, and if these sounds occur in patterns rather than randomly. By understanding how and why babies produce these sounds, scientists hope to uncover foundational processes that support language acquisition, as well as develop new ways to track healthy vocal development in early infancy. “Infants’ endogenous vocalizations and their exploration of different vocal types …

There may be a few young people in Britain today who recognize the name Ludwig Koch, but in the nineteen-forties, he constituted something of a cultural phenomenon unto himself. He “started recording sounds and voices in the 1880s when he was still a child” in his native Germany, says the website of the BBC. After fleeing from the Nazis, he settled in England, which created the opportunity for the Beeb to acquire his collection of field recordings, using it to start building its own library of nature sounds. Soon, Koch “became a household name as a nature broadcaster,” and his “distinct German accent and eccentric location recordings became so well known that he was parodied by Peter Sellers.” You can hear 168 of Koch’s field recordings at the online archive of BBC Sound Effects, whose digital holdings have in recent years grown to include over 33,000 different sounds from various sources, spanning more than a century. “These include clips made by the BBC Radiophonic workshop, recordings from the Blitz in London, special effects made for …

Lionsgate’s AI Deal Sounds a Lot Like It Wants to Replace the Jobs of Storyboard and VFX Artists

Lionsgate’s AI Deal Sounds a Lot Like It Wants to Replace the Jobs of Storyboard and VFX Artists

The goal is to save “millions and millions of dollars,” the studio says. Cine-files Lionsgate, the studio behind hit franchises ranging from “John Wick” to “The Hunger Games” to cult classics like “American Psycho,” is entering into a major partnership with the AI firm Runway, The Wall Street Journal reports. As part of the deal, announced Wednesday, Runway receives access to Lionsgate’s treasure trove of movies and TV shows — which in return the startup will use to develop a new AI model exclusively for the Hollywood studio. Runway claims that the AI model will be capable of generating “cinematic video.” And Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns says the tech will save the company “millions and millions of dollars,” per the WSJ — remarks that suggest an aim of slashing jobs if the project is successful, with Burns saying the goal is to use the tool for roles that have traditionally been done by humans, like storyboarding and the creation of visual effects. “We do a lot of action movies, so we blow a lot of …

Watch enough classic movies — especially classic movies from slightly downmarket studios — and you’ll swear you’ve been hearing the very same sound effects over and over again. That’s because you have been hearing the very same sound effects over and over again: once recorded or acquired for one film, they could, of course, be re-used in another, and another, and another. No such frequently employed recording has a more illustrious and well-documented history than the so-called “Wilhelm scream,” which, according to Oliver Macaulay at the Science + Media Museum, “has been used in over 400 films and TV programs.” “First recorded in 1951, the ‘Wilhelm scream’ was initially featured as stock sound effect in Raoul Walsh’s western Distant Drums,” writes Macaulay, but it got its name from a scene in The Charge at Feather River, from 1953: “When Private Wilhelm takes an arrow to the leg, he lets out the fabled blood-curdling cry which came to permeate Hollywood’s soundscape.” It may well have been most widely heard in the original Star Wars, “when Luke …

Trump Sounds Like He’s Dying Inside as He Shills New Digital Trading Cards

Trump Sounds Like He’s Dying Inside as He Shills New Digital Trading Cards

“You all know what they are, we’ve had a lot of fun with them.” Sad Sack In a new video, ex-president Donald Trump is a shell of his former boisterous self as he shills a new collection of his laughably ugly digital trading cards. Posted on X-formerly-Twitter, Trump seems barely able to muster any enthusiasm when boasting that he has some “very exciting news” about the latest drop of his non-fungible token (NFT) trading cards. “By popular demand, I am doing a new series of Trump digital trading cards,” the GOP candidate mutters in the strange video. “You all know what they are, we’ve had a lot of fun with them.” In the video, Trump wheezes that if one buys 15 of the $99-apiece digital collectibles, they’ll receive a physical trading card in the mail that is said to contain a part of what he’s calling his “knock-out” suit that he wore when he was shot at a rally earlier this summer. They can also purchase packages that feature tickets to one of his galas, …

Intimidated and terrorized”: Rachel Maddow sounds alarm over Republicans undermining “rule of law

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow on Monday delved into how former President Donald Trump and his staunchest supporters have endangered the rule of law and democracy at large. Maddow began by referencing Trump’s criminal hush-money trial in Manhattan, specifically highlighting the ex-president’s consistent violation of his gag order, which Judge Juan Merchan has repeatedly stated could land him in jail.  “I also worry about the people who would have to execute the sanction: court officers, the correction officers, the Secret Service detail, among others,” Maddow quoted Merchan as saying. “I worry about them and about what would go into executing such a sanction.” Despite Trump’s continued inflammatory remarks, Merchan has indicated that he doesn’t wish to jail him, as it would disrupt legal proceedings. “Of course, I’m also aware of the broader implications of such a sanction,” Merchan said. “But, at the end of the day, I have a job to do … Your continued violations of this Court’s lawful Order threaten to interfere with the administration of justice in constant attacks that constitute a direct …

Why Your Voice Sounds Older As You Age

Why Your Voice Sounds Older As You Age

Ask any little kid who’s playing the grandparent in a school play — high and scratchy is the way to go to pull off a perfect “old person” voice. And while we all understand that what’s being depicted is a caricature, we might be unaware of how similar changes are gradually being more evident in our own voices. If you’ve noticed that your voice has been growing unsteady, weaker or breathier, you may be experiencing symptoms of presbyphonia, a term that refers to the changes of the aging voice. These changes typically happen to some degree in all people as they get older, according to Lisa Vinney, a speech-language pathologist and faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “But those changes can occur more rapidly or be more pronounced thanks to genetic, lifestyle and health factors.” Vinney explained that recent meta-analysis suggests that across 11 studies of older adults already identified as having a voice disorder, 17.87% had presbyphonia. “This was not a general sample of older adults, but a sample of older adults self-identifying …

Google Phone gets strange ‘audio emojis’ that play sounds, like fart noises, during calls

Google Phone gets strange ‘audio emojis’ that play sounds, like fart noises, during calls

Jack Wallen/ZDNET Have you ever felt like all that was missing from your phone calls was a fart button? You’re in luck. First reported by 9to5Google, Google is introducing “Audio Emojis” to its Google Phone calling app. Six “emojis” are available, and each one plays an audible sound to both sides of the call. Options include clapping and laughing, which sound just like what you might think, crying, which sends a sarcastic sad trombone, party, sting, which is the classic “ba dum tiss dum” sequence, and poop, which… plays a fart sound. Google describes the feature like this: “Express emotions and moods with sounds like applause, laughter, sad trombone, and more with tappable emoji while you’re in a call.” Also: The best Google Pixel phones you can buy: Expert tested Fortunately, there is a time limit so that you can’t play the sounds back-to-back. There’s also a button to disable the feature entirely if it bothers you, and hopefully that also blocks you from receiving any unwanted noises. Google is slowly deploying the audio emojis, …
