Whither American Socialism? | Michael Kazin

For two centuries socialism—a term first used by the French political economist Pierre Leroux—has been both a critique of capitalism and an alternative to it. In the United States, it has proved far more influential as the first than as the second. Before a joint session of Congress in 1825, Robert Owen, a wealthy, altruistic factory owner, condemned “this inferior trading system” (that is, capitalism) for allowing people “to obtain advantages over others” and giving “a very injurious surplus of wealth and power to the few” while inflicting “poverty and subjection on the many.” But nearly every agrarian collectivist colony he inspired across the country scattered to the winds after just a few years. A socialist movement composed largely of wage earners sprang up toward the end of the nineteenth century. It effectively denounced the robber barons of industry and finance for ruling the economy, busting unions, and buying off politicians. But Marxists who dreamed of a workers’ republic could not compete with the reformers in Congress who enacted such measures as a progressive income …

How Neoliberals Fueled The Rise Of Socialism

How Neoliberals Fueled The Rise Of Socialism

Authored by Connor O’Keeffe via Mises Institute, The rising popularity of politicians on the American left who either explicitly identify as socialist or, at least, don’t shy away from or disavow the term appears to be causing genuine concern within the Washington establishment. That is, of course, entirely justified. Socialism is profoundly unjust and destructive. These days, the socialists like to present their entire ideology as nothing more than having a bit of empathy for those in need or an interest in seeing everyone “have” access to services like modern healthcare. Look any deeper, though, or ask some follow-up questions, and the truth will eventually surface. What the socialists actually want is a massive increase in government interventionism that would see nearly every aspect of life politicized and the remaining productive components of the economy hollowed out into a zero-sum lobbying battle to claim some of the diminishing loot of a much larger, more powerful, and tax-happy federal government. Any step towards socialism needs to be energetically opposed by everyone who cares about the rights …

The Other Problem With Socialism

The Other Problem With Socialism

Authored by Chris Talgo via American Thinker, In 1976, Margaret Thatcher said during a television interview, “Socialist governments traditionally do make a financial mess. They always run out of other people’s money.” Over the years, that quote has been whittled down to the renowned proverb: The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money. This is a powerful argument against socialism. Even better, it has been validated time and time again, most notably when the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics collapsed in 1991. The Soviet Union was an economic basket case, and the whole world witnessed its demise. But socialism has an even bigger problem: it is immoral. Even if it did somehow work efficiently and effectively at an economic level, it would still be immoral. A broad definition of “moral” is “conforming to a standard of behavior that is considered right and good by most people.” Morality is synonymous with truth, honor, honesty, fairness, righteousness, and virtue. Immorality is the antithesis of morality. It is synonymous with wickedness, callousness, …

Theft of your money or theft of any person / victim who earns money and pays taxes, where those taxes go into pet projects which the victims did not vote for and or to cover the compound cumulative interest on the non-stop production of fraud created by the fraudsters (socialists). It is no coincidence that the 2 largest purveyors of fraud in the U.S. are the Federal Reserve and the School Districts, which own the Central Appraisal …
