Quantum communication market to soar to $5.5bn by 2030

The global quantum communication market is set to witness explosive growth, expanding from $0.74bn in 2024 to an estimated $5.54bn by 2030, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 39.6%, according to a recent MarketsandMarkets report. This surge reflects mounting investments in quantum technology research and development (R&D) as organisations across the world strive to harness the advantages of quantum communication for heightened data security and next-generation networking. What is quantum communication? Quantum communication is a cutting-edge technology that leverages the principles of quantum mechanics to transmit data securely. Unlike traditional communication methods that rely on classical bits, quantum communication uses quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously, a phenomenon known as superposition. This property allows quantum communication to encode data in ways that are virtually impossible for malicious actors to intercept or tamper with. One of the most groundbreaking aspects of quantum communication is quantum entanglement, a process by which two or more qubits become interconnected so that the state of one qubit instantaneously influences the state of the …

NHS faces ‘ticking bomb’ with number of heart failure patients set to soar | Heart disease

The health service faces a “ticking time bomb” over people suffering from heart failure, with diagnosed cases predicted to nearly double by 2040, medical experts have warned. The British Society for Heart Failure (BSH) warns there are an estimated 400,000 people with undiagnosed heart failure in the UK. It warns there is an urgent need for a national initiative to detect these cases or NHS services face being overwhelmed in future years. Heart failure happens when the heart is unable to properly pump blood around the body. It is a long-term condition that cannot be cured, but early diagnosis and treatment can reduce the risk of hospitalisation and death. Treatments include medication to improve heart function and surgery, implanting a pacemaker to control heart rate or heart surgery to improve blood flow. About 80% of patients with heart failure are diagnosed after emergency admission to hospital. About one in 10 die in hospital and about a third who are discharged will die within the year. Doctors say patients are not being effectively diagnosed in the …

Debt payments by countries most vulnerable to climate crisis soar | Debt relief

Debt payments by the 50 countries most vulnerable to the climate crisis have doubled since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and now stand at their highest level in more than three decades, campaigners have warned. The Debt Justice charity said countries at the highest risk of being affected by global heating were paying 15.5% of government revenues to external creditors – up from less than 8% before Covid-19 and 4% at their lowest recent point in 2010. Using data from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the charity said its new report showed the urgent need for comprehensive debt relief so that poor countries could invest in measures to tackle the climate crisis. “Record levels of debt are crushing the ability of the most vulnerable countries to tackle the climate emergency,” said Heidi Chow, the executive director of Debt Justice. “We need a rapid and effective debt relief scheme to cancel debts down to a sustainable level. The UK can play its part by legislating to ensure private lenders take part in …

British Airways owner International Airlines Group sees profits soar | Business News

The owner of British Airways has reported a sharp rise in profits amid soaring demand for trips and a fall in the cost of fuel. International Airlines Group (IAG) said its operating profit for the first three months of the year was €68m (£58.5m) – above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023. The company, which also owns Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays. It said fuel costs had also dropped almost 5% – compared to the same period last year – due to lower prices and “more efficient” aircraft deliveries. IAG said British Airways (BA) and its other airlines had reported a noticeable uptick in ticket sales for flights between major European cities, especially for leisure trips. Chief executive Luis Gallego said the group’s airlines had already secured more than 80% of projected bookings for the second quarter and over 40% for the third quarter. Disease and hunger soar in Latin America after floods and drought, study finds | Climate crisis

Hunger and disease are rising in Latin America after a year of record heat, floods and drought, a report by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has shown. The continent, which is trapped between the freakishly hot Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, probably suffered tens of thousands of climate-related deaths in 2023, at least $21bn (£17bn) of economic damage and “the greatest calorific loss” of any region, the study found. The climate chaos, caused by a combination of human-driven global heating and a natural El Niño effect, is continuing with devastating floods in the southern Brazilian city of Porto Alegre, which have killed at least 95 people and deluged swathes of farmland after the world’s hottest April in human history. Global heat records have now been broken for 11 months in a row, causing death and destruction across many parts of the planet. Latin America and the Caribbean have experienced some of the worst effects. In a summary of last year’s toll in this region, the WMO said disasters and climate change, along with socioeconomic shocks, are …

Coinbase profits soar over $1 billion from a year amid Bitcoin ETF boom

Coinbase, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, reported a remarkable turnaround in its first-quarter financial results on Thursday (May 2). The company swung to a staggering $1.2 billion profit, or $4.84 per share, for the three months ended March 31, a stark contrast to the $79 million loss, or $0.34 per share, it posted a year earlier. This dramatic shift in fortunes came on the heels of surging cryptocurrency trading volumes, fueled by the launch of the first U.S.-listed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) tracking Bitcoin in January. Coinbase profits rise with the launch of Bitcoin ETFs The SEC’s approval of several spot bitcoin ETFs ignited a frenzy in the crypto markets. Coinbase, serving as the custodian for multiple spot Bitcoin ETFs, including BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, reaped the benefits of this renewed investor enthusiasm. Bitcoin prices skyrocketed to a new all-time high above $72,000 in March, driving trading volumes on Coinbase’s platform to $312 billion, more than doubling from $145 billion a year prior. CEO Brian Armstrong attributed the company’s success to its focus on …

8 Symptoms Of Measles Parents Need To Know As UK Cases Soar

Measles is often thought of as a thing of the past because we’ve had an effective vaccine against it for a long time (MMR), but with measles cases on the rise globally, parents need to stay vigilant to spot the symptoms as soon as possible. In 2023 there was an increase of the measles outbreak in 40 out of 53 countries in the European region. Additionally in the UK there has been an outbreak in the West Midlands, London and Yorkshire. Dr Vanessa Saliba, UKHSA Consultant Epidemiologist, says: “The ongoing measles outbreak in the West Midlands remains a concern. MMR vaccine coverage has been falling for the last decade with 1 out of 10 children starting school in England not protected and so there is a real risk that this outbreak could spread to other towns and cities. “Measles is a nasty illness for most children and for some can be serious, but it is completely preventable. Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and your children. If you or your child are not …

Parents describe baby’s ‘scary’ measles symptoms as cases soar | UK News

The parents of a five-month-old baby who was left struggling to breathe after contracting measles have described her “scary” ordeal as the number of cases soar. England is facing a measles emergency with 86 confirmed cases in England over the past week, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). It brings the total number of measles cases recorded so far this year to almost 900 – a sharp increase from 368 cases in all of 2023. About two-thirds of those affected are under the age of 10. Health workers say the current outbreak, which started in the West Midlands last year, has now spread to every region of the country. London has become the latest hotspot and five-month-old Margot House is among those who have recently contracted the highly-contagious disease. Her mother Georgia House told Sky News: “It’s really scary because I was holding my little baby, she was struggling to breathe and she looked god-awful. “She had rashes on her tummy, behind her neck and going up her head.” Image: Margot’s rash stretched …

Soar, Slide, Splash? It’s Skiers’ Choice as Spring’s Wacky Pond Skimming Tradition Returns

Soar, Slide, Splash? It’s Skiers’ Choice as Spring’s Wacky Pond Skimming Tradition Returns

GILFORD, N.H. (AP) — A costumed skier races down a slope, hits a pond and hydroplanes halfway across. He pirouettes and then plunges into the icy water before jumping up and waving to the cheering crowd. It’s the wacky spring tradition of pond skimming, and it’s happening this month at ski resorts across the country. It’s often held to celebrate the last day of the skiing season before the chairlifts close until the following winter. Among the resorts holding pond skimming events this weekend are Snowbasin in Utah and Winter Park in Colorado. Mountains in New England and California have already held events or have them scheduled for later in the month. The tradition dates back decades, made famous by the late filmmaker Warren Miller who began documenting the annual Mt. Baker Slush Cup in Washington state in the 1950s. These days, most resorts make their own ponds with plastic sheeting and water about 3 feet (1 meter) deep. The idea is that skiers and snowboarders try to gain enough downhill momentum to skim clear …
