Zegler, 23, who plays the film’s titular character, showed support for Palestinian people when she shared the first official Snow White trailer on X in August 2023. She thanked her fans for their support, before adding in a separate post: “And always remember, free Palestine.” The post, which garnered 8.8 million views, caused Disney executives to immediately contact Zegler’s team, with Marc Platt flying to New York to speak to the star, according to Variety. Zegler’s co-star Gal Gadot, who is Israeli, reportedly began to receive death threats following the post and Disney had to pay for increased security for the star and her family. Gadot has long been an advocate for Israel. In her 20s, she served …

Yeti, Inuit, Blanche Gardin in Berlin Film ‘The Incredible Snow Woman’

Yeti, Inuit, Blanche Gardin in Berlin Film ‘The Incredible Snow Woman’

“Traveling solo across Greenland, camping on an ice floe, single-handedly wrestling a bear. Not much daunts Coline Morel – except, perhaps, confronting her own existence when it starts to spiral out of control.” Thus reads a synopsis of French writer-director Sébastien Betbeder’s film The Incredible Snow Woman (L’ Incroyable femme des neiges) with French comedian Blanche Gardin (Yannick, The Book of Solutions), Philippe Katerine, Bastien Bouillon, Ole Eliassen, and Martin Jensen, which will world premiere at the 75th Berlin Film Festival. Screening in the Berlinale’s main sidebar Panorama, the new movie from the director of Marie and the Misfits and Ulysses & Mona sees the protagonist, an explorer, turning up unannounced in her native village in the Jura mountains to visit her two brothers Basile and Lolo, whom she hasn’t seen in years. Add in the appearance of her first love and other unexpected developments, and Coline spirals out of control. The journey she decides she must go on, which also includes an inner journey, could turn out to be the most difficult and the …

Life in the subnivium, beneath the snow, is at risk of melting away

Life in the subnivium, beneath the snow, is at risk of melting away

A soft, thick coat of snow makes a lot of the world seem to slow down or even stop — at least temporarily. The fluffy piles absorb sound and make the world quiet and still. But deep underneath, in pockets between the snow and the ground, life goes on. This is the subnivium — a tiny ecosystem all its own. Here under the white stuff, roots, small mammals, microbes, insects and even birds thrive. They use the subnivium to make the most of the winter months — hunting, breeding, breaking down leaves and more. All those cold-weather activities help determine which plants and animals (including insects) thrive during the snow-free seasons. But this seasonal ecosystem is in danger. Climate change is making winters warmer. Much of the precipitation that used to fall as snow now pours out of the sky as rain. Snow covers less ground and for less time. No snow means no subnivium. And as this snowy ecosystem shrinks, a host of organisms might pay the price. Their loss could change the way …

Snow days set to disappear across much of the US

Snow days set to disappear across much of the US

A white-tailed jackrabbit (Lepus townsendii) in the snow AUSLOOS Henry/Hemis/Alamy Days with snow covering the ground are set to become less common across much of the continental US due to climate change. If greenhouse gas emissions continue as usual, by the end of the century, days with deep snow are projected to disappear almost everywhere except high mountain regions. Once-snowy areas have already started transforming. “We see places like New Hampshire turning into places like New Jersey, which is a bit hard to swallow,” says Elizabeth Burakowsi at the University of New Hampshire. Snow Elegy | Ishion Hutchinson

Wild petunias slowly go blind and a starched nurse races to your bed to find your quick hawk gaze fixed on a blue mahoe branch scraping the louvre glass, its cellophane sound blurs a gesture of recoil or beckon that transmits the ginger lily’s rage and the coral ixora’s incandescent grief beyond my survivor’s guilt. No snow today, none yesterday, no snow ever on the jacaranda, sly tree whitewashed violet antic bells falling with stark provincial pride from the sky’s washed-out purple, cut up motion-capture florets still as yesterday. I grasp at your formal and arcane joy: then sings my soul, my saviour… that dhoti language death today brings to buttress the heart against further misgivings. Source link

Foxes’ skulls are specially adapted for diving into snow

Foxes’ skulls are specially adapted for diving into snow

A red fox about to dive into the snow to catch prey Maxime Riendeau/Getty Images Some foxes can dive headfirst into snow without harm, and now we know how their skull shape is adapted for this technique. In cold climates, where small rodents live deep under the snow, red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) and Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) have a specialised hunting technique known as mousing. They use their strong sense of hearing to pinpoint the location of prey, jump into the air and then dive face-first into large piles of snow at speeds of up to 4 metres per second to catch them by surprise. “It’s a very interesting and unique behaviour,” says Sunghwan Jung at Cornell University in New York. “Not all foxes do it either.” To learn more about why red and Arctic foxes are so adept at snow-diving, Jung and his colleagues scanned the skulls of 13 fox species as well as those of other mammals, such as lynx and pumas, from museum collections. Their analysis found that felines tended to have …

Ordinary Angels: Hilary Swank on the true story of a ‘snow baby’ and a helpful stranger | Ents & Arts News

Hilary Swank says playing roles based on real stories have made her a “better person”. The 49-year-old has portrayed a real-life single mother, a lawyer and a high-school dropout – and won her first Academy Award in 2000 for Boys Don’t Cry, a story based on the life of Brandon Teena, a trans man who was murdered in 1993. She tells Sky News: “Each character that I’ve ever played is in my heart, and I am so grateful for that because it just made me, I think, a better person and certainly helped me challenge myself as an artist”. Pic: Sony Pictures/Allen Fraser Swank says she never thought her acting choices would have such an impact on others and finds it “so beautiful to have those conversations” with people who relate to the roles she has played. “[My filmography] touches not only different, genders, which is so unique, but different races and, and different classes of people and that is so beautiful because I then get to …

Freezing nights forecast for parts of UK, with snow possible in some areas | UK weather

Freezing overnight temperatures will hit parts of the UK on Wednesday and Thursday, with experts warning some areas could see snow. The cold Arctic air is expected to cause frosts across parts of northern England and Scotland, with temperatures going as low as -3C. The Met Office predicted there could be snow on higher ground, with northerly winds bringing chilly nights and below-average temperatures. However, the chilly conditions are expected to subside by the weekend. Ellie Glaisyer, a meteorologist at the Met Office, said the chillier temperatures experienced in April were “nothing exceptional” and are expected to move closer to their seasonal averages over the weekend and into the start of next week. She said that on Wednesday and Thursday night, “there will be some frost in places”, adding: “The reason for [the low temperatures] is that we’ve got an area of high pressure out towards the west of the UK and that gives us a northerly wind across the UK. “So it’s those northerly winds that are bringing us to slightly below-average temperatures, particularly …
