The Split: Barcelona review – Nicola Walker is simply magnificent in Christmas special

Get our free weekly email for all the latest cinematic news from our film critic Clarisse Loughrey Get our The Life Cinematic email for free Get our The Life Cinematic email for free A beautiful young couple rushing headlong into marriage. A sun-soaked location. Romantic complications trailing the mother of the bride. There’s more than a dash of Mamma Mia! to The Split: Barcelona, the two-part special that picks up on BBC One a couple of years after Abi Morgan’s divorce lawyer drama came to an end – although given that our protagonists are a family of high-flying solicitors, everyone has considerably worse work-life balance than they do in Abba-world.   Indeed, the hustle never stops for Hannah Defoe, played by the magnificent Nicola Walker. She’s barely touched down in Spain before she’s fine-tuning the details of a prenuptial agreement, although this particular legal document is closer to her heart than most. Her daughter Liv (Elizabeth Roberts) is about to tie the knot with her boyfriend Gael (Alex Guersman), who happens to be the wealthy heir to a glorious Catalonian vineyard …

‘Denying history is simply lying’: how the University of Melbourne honoured racists, thieves and body snatchers | Australian universities

Nazi apologists, massacre perpetrators, grave robbers, racists and eugenicists were hugely influential across the entire history of the University of Melbourne, according to its own research. The university has published a shocking account of the dark side of these erstwhile heroes of Australian academia in a book it hopes will tell a greater truth about the institution and its dealings with Aboriginal people. Some of Australia’s most celebrated scientists, including a Nobel laureate and others of world renown – along with doctors, historians, anthropologists and other academic staff – advocated breeding out “lower” and “deficient” “races”, particularly Aboriginal people; others exhumed, collected and later concealed Aboriginal remains; while yet others supported nazism, even after the second world war. In one account a university graduate, Daniel Murnane, whose name until March this year graced a veterinary science scholarship, was among a group of men who perpetrated a 1926 massacre of Aboriginal people at Forrest River in the Kimberley. A subsequent royal commission into the killings confirmed that at least 11 Aboriginal people had been killed and …

Two Things I Simply Couldn’t Do When My Marriage Fell Apart

Two Things I Simply Couldn’t Do When My Marriage Fell Apart

I’m the youngest of five children. I used to joke with my mom there weren’t too many pictures of me as a baby. Could I blame her? No. Her plate was full. She wasn’t a big-picture taker. It made me want to chronicle every moment of my children’s lives. I loved photos. I’m also an organizer. I like a clean house and things in their spot. It was fun for me to create the albums that held our memories. I didn’t waste any time. They were immediately chronicled. I may not have followed in my mother’s photography steps, but I did follow her in the kitchen. Dinners were a big deal. I made everything from scratch just as she had. No boxes or cans were going into anything I made. It was a labor of love, just as it had been for her. Nissan Aims To Cut Costs By 30% Simply To Remain Competitive In EVs

Nissan Aims To Cut Costs By 30% Simply To Remain Competitive In EVs

Nissan is the latest manufacturer to aim to cut EV costs in order to keep up with an increasingly competitive and saturated landscape. The company is now seeking to compete with Chinese rivals by slashing costs by 30%, Financial Times reported this weekend.   Nissan, in collaboration with Renault and recently Honda, faces challenges in China’s auto market, the report notes. After delays, Nissan’s new business plan seeks to boost sales by 1 million units by fiscal 2026, introducing 30 new models, half of which will be EVs or hybrids. This includes launching eight “new energy” vehicles in China and starting exports of locally made cars next year. In North America, the goal is to increase sales by 330,000 vehicles by 2026, with India becoming a key export hub. Additionally, Nissan aims to release an EV with solid-state batteries by 2028, Financial Times writes.  Chief executive Makoto Uchida commented: “Faced with extreme market volatility, Nissan is taking decisive actions guided by the new plan to ensure sustainable growth and profitability.” Nissan’s new strategy follows a notable alliance with Honda …

Are religions simply cults that have gone mainstream?

Are religions simply cults that have gone mainstream?

How would you feel if your next-door neighbor was in a cult? What if your son or daughter came home to inform you they had joined a “community of like-minded people”? In 2004, the theologian Paul Olson interviewed 2,400 randomly selected Nebraskans about how comfortable they would feel if their neighbor joined a cult or a new Christian church. More than 80% of respondents said they’d feel uncomfortable about living next door to a cultist, compared with only 6.1% disapproving of a new Christian church. It’s easy to imagine how they’d take the news coming from their child. Olson’s aim was to show what sociologists have argued for some time: The word “cult” is laden with negative connotations. It’s used to denigrate and slander belief systems or wheeled out whenever some strange, secretive group is brought to light. The historian J. Gordon Melton has even argued that cults are defined by illegitimacy; what we call a cult is a cult only if we disapprove of it and believe it to be beyond “proper” religion. And …

Kate Middleton’s uncle Gary Goldsmith says his niece is ‘simply perfect’ as he makes grand entrance to Celebrity Big Brother

Simply paused or permanently sunk? The Kroger-Albertsons merger has hit a major snag

Simply paused or permanently sunk? The Kroger-Albertsons merger has hit a major snag

When grocery chains Kroger and Albertsons — which together own more than 5,000 supermarkets across the country, including regional chains like King Soopers, Harris Teeter, Safeway, Mariano’s and Vons — first announced plans to merge in 2022, they promoted the idea by saying that in combining forces as the nation’s biggest and second biggest American grocery companies, they could lower prices, increase staff wages, protect union jobs and overall enhance customers’ shopping experiences.  Quickly, national union leadership and some liberal lawmakers, including Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, voiced major concerns about the merger, specifically in how it would affect the cost of groceries amid sustained inflation, the retention of union jobs and in how the resulting conglomerate would impact labor market competition.  In the ensuing two years, the supermarkets and those opposed to their merger have argued their points, including in various state-level lawsuits, while the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigated the potential impacts of the deal. This process reached a critical climax last week when, after 16 months of debate, the FTC filed …

Do we simply not care about old people?

Do we simply not care about old people?

The covid-19 pandemic would be a wake-up call for America, advocates for the elderly predicted: incontrovertible proof that the nation wasn’t doing enough to care for vulnerable older adults. The death toll was shocking, as were reports of chaos in nursing homes and seniors suffering from isolation, depression, untreated illness, and neglect. Around 900,000 older adults have died of covid-19 to date, accounting for 3 of every 4 Americans who have perished in the pandemic. But decisive actions that advocates had hoped for haven’t materialized. Today, most people — and government officials — appear to accept covid as a part of ordinary life. Many seniors at high risk aren’t getting antiviral therapies for covid, and most older adults in nursing homes aren’t getting updated vaccines. Efforts to strengthen care quality in nursing homes and assisted living centers have stalled amid debate over costs and the availability of staff. And only a small percentage of people are masking or taking other precautions in public despite a new wave of covid, flu, and respiratory syncytial virus infections …
